According to Reuters:

Contact lost with Air Algerie plane carrying 116 people from Burkina Faso

Authorities have lost contact with an Air Algerie flight en route from Ouagadougou in Burkina Faso to Algiers with 110 passengers on board, Algeria's APS state news agency and a Spanish airline company said on Thursday.

A heavy sand storm over Mali is being hypothesized as the likely culprit for this one.

The aviation industry is having a really tough year. Another major disaster in the making, the fourth one in a few months. Soon enough I'll be afraid of flying, even though it is not rational, given the thousands of flights that daily take off and land without any problem.

Opinions? How does that affect you?

Doesn't affect me at all.

I have a slight fear of crashing (flying I like).

But jetting around at 550+ miles an hour is risky stuff no matter what.

To ever expect it to be 'safe' is, IMO, naive in the extremis.

I am surprised more planes don't crash...and my brother is a pilot.

I hate the take-offs and landings myself. And turbulence.

Yeah flying around in a pressurized metal tube going hundreds of miles an hour, I'm suprised MORE accidents don't occur.

Off topic, but people always ask why everyone doesn't have a flying car. Just take a look at the highways and the cars that break down. Can you imagine a breakdown at 10,000 feet or more? Holy cow!

I've gotten used to it over the years traveling, but Las Vegas airport freaked me out in the beginning. It has small runways and 1 out of 5 trips flying in there, they have tried to land, then have to quickly accelerate and take off again, circle around and try it again. Guess the winds down there are horrible along with the small runways.

MD-83 operated the flight, registration EC-LTV. Wet leased from Spanish airline Swiftair.

My daughter worked that airport in the past. She said the high temperatures affects the plane's performance and payload capacities

It doesn't have small runways, hell, we used to run 747 flights out of there. In higher temps, the density of the air is less, reducing lift. Can be tough when you have an older engine type on a longer distance flight with a full plane. Gets much worse if you are at a higher elevation airport on a hot day. We do flights from Costa Rica to Phoenix on a A319, and several times a year it takes a weight penalty and we have to leave about 30 seats empty. Wrong plane for the route, but the 757 is in use on Hawaii flights and shorter transatlantic flights.

Next time you are at Las Vegas airport, look for the 737's that are all white, with a red stripe right across the middle. That is an airline that you can't fly on, and is going somewhere that doesn't officially exist :).

Imagine letting everyone move around in a 3 dimensional space.

I've seen those planes on the Net. ;)

No kidding, I watch how people drive on the highway no way I would trust them in 3-D space.
