Obama family set to buy $4.25M desert home: Report

Re: Obama family set to buy $4.25M desert home: Whatta Great Country, eh?

I'm actually surprised. I had them pegged for a house in Hawaii, not California. Interesting. I wonder why there?

I thought the Obamas bought an estate in Hawaii a couple of years ago. Something like $35 m?

Re: Obama family set to buy $4.25M desert home: Whatta Great Country, eh?

Yes, but let's face facts here. NO politician is "like-us" generally. None, so if people bought into that they are quite foolish.

True enough, but many at least did start out like us, Bush and plenty others from both sides of the isle, not so much.

Re: Obama family set to buy $4.25M desert home: Whatta Great Country, eh?

Got it, but I don't think his dad could just write a check from the family trust fund.

Yeah, but that's not the issue. It's what the fellow with his butt in the seat does.

Re: Obama family set to buy $4.25M desert home: Whatta Great Country, eh?

I've explained why this sort of purchase by an active POTUS may be a concern. And I think every POTUS previously has avoided doing so if only for the perception. But in any event, Obama wouldn't be a hypocrite for becoming rich, but rather for what he does with the wealth.

Do we know yet if the story is true?

Good gawd, are we discussing something that might not even be true, by page 13, its still un verified? Anyway, I would agree with you that, if its true, the perception is damaging and he should have waited a couple years.

It's not true, and I'm not yet clear on where the rumors started (well, aside from the alleged realtors themselves, I mean).

As nothing more than a pr measure, Karl Rove had Bush to buy a big texas ranch. Once it had served its purpose, he dispensed with it. Funny how partisans behave.

Several real estate agents, speaking anonymously, said they heard secondhand that the president was looking to buy the 1993 home, which is downhill from the residence of Michael Smith, a personal friend of Michelle Obama who was the interior designer of the Sunnylands Center and the Oval Office.

Yup, nothing iffy about this story at all.

Thanks for hunting that down. It does look like speculation. However, this sort of reply I hate, it doesn't answer the damn question and makes them look like they're hiding something. A simple "No" would have been an easy answer.

During the briefing, Earnest was asked, "Has the president or anyone on his behalf bought a house in California or planning to buy a house in California?"

Earnest replied: "I've seen those reports, too. Those reports are not accurate."

Yeah, I don't understand the necessity for that kind of answer either.

I wasn't aware that the ranch had been sold.

So it's official: George W. Bush is not a cowboy. We pretty much suspected he wasn't when we learned that, for all his bow-legged strutting, the man's afraid of horses. But last week, Bush let the other Lucchese boot drop: He and Laura bought a $2 million, fancy-pants house in Dallas's toniest neighborhood and will soon be high-tailin' it out of that eight-year-old stage set of a "ranch" in Crawford. Any uncleared brush can go clear itself.

Here's the deal. When Obama was running for office, he said "I am one of you".

Anyone who believed that is a ****en retard. When was the last time a poor or middle class person become president?

He goes there all the time for Christmas, but I thought he was renting a villa there. He couldn't afford a $35 million home anyway, could he?

$2 million isn't impressive for a former POTUS who is the eldest son of a weathy family.

Lots of poor and middle class people ascended to our highest office. Lots of silver spoon babies, too!

That wasn't the take away tres, but yeah, 2 mil wasn't much, I'm intimate with the neighbourhood.

Yup, nothing iffy about this story at all.

Nothing more concrete than anonymous comments from people who got it secondhand, no doubt from someone else who was told secondhand information from another anonymous source.

Good grief. Sounds like a bad game of telephone.

Oh I know it wasn't the takeaway Monte. I saw note's post about the ranch. I was just surprised that's all he spent on the Dallas digs.

Preston Hollow?

No he couldn't, but then negative rumours get started this way.

Yeah, and frankly I would have expected more.

Me too. I have friends in PH and I've been there. Nice houses, don't get me wrong, but not ex-POTUS Bush nice... you know?

If you live there, I don't mean to disparage your neighborhood in any way.

Haha, I can't quite live there. I did live 12 years in Dallas. The houses are typically older nice, real nice, but agreed, not typical ex-POTUS nice.

Re: Obama family set to buy $4.25M desert home: Whatta Great Country, eh?

Actually this very thing was brought up with Hillary's book deal. Supposedly she got an advance that was far more than what the sales of the book were expected to bring. In that case, the publisher would be in it for something other than profit.

Is it possible that these "speaking engagements," ex-presidents make a killing on, are merely deferred bribes?
