TALLAHASSEE -- A judge threw out Florida’s congressional redistricting map Thursday, ruling that the Legislature allowed for a “secret, organized campaign” by partisan operatives to subvert the redistricting process in violation of the state Constitution.

Oops. Florida again. LOL.

Gerrymandering - the fundamental key to progressiveism. If you can't beat em' draw a line.

Good, I think when it comes to redistricting a simple rule should apply. Counties should remain whole as much as possible. If Florida has 27 congressional districts, no more than 14 counties should have to be divided between districts. All the rest should be able to remain whole.

That would be somewhat difficult, in that some counties have loads of people, while others have relatively few. What I would like to see is districts conforming as much as possible to a rectangular shape.

Note really, Miami and Dade county has approximately 2.5 million people. The average size of a congressional district is approximately 700,000 people. So give Date county 3 CD's. That's 2.1 million. Broward County is the next one up, it has approximately 1.8 million. Add the northern portion of Dade to Broward that gives you 2.2 million and 3 more CD's or 6 CD's with a 100,000 left over. If give the county and its population I could sit here and draw up 27 CD's out of Florida's 67 counties and I guarantee you I will have not more than 14 counties divided between congressional districts. With just what I proposed I would have 65 counties to carve out the remaining 21 CD's and I haven't even counted the Tampa/St. Pete or Jacksonville areas.

If I can do it with a stubby pencil probably in less than an hour if I had all the population figures, it should be easily done via computer in far less time. But by keeping as many counties whole as possible, that does away with gerrymandering to keep certain representatives safe.

Re: Judge throws out Florida's congressional map

LOL, another substance free knock at Florida. Funniest part is just about every state that doesn't have an amendment forbidding the practice uses secret, organized campaigns of partisan operatives to draw their districts.

Take a look at Maryland's districts, one of the most gerrymandered states in the union.

I seriously think he just assumed it was Democrats doing it. Because Democrats bad.

In 2012, Democrats received 1.4 million more votes in the House of Representatives than Republicans did. Republicans somehow got a 33 seat advantage. You want to tell me it's progressives doing all that terrible gerrymandering?

gerrymandering--the reason for the 17th amendment against the gilded wing of the GOP

And then there is the problem with Democratic cities like Atlanta he fails to mention.
Where Democratic votes are concentrated at 80% levels compared to say Cantor's 57%.

Your Texas has led the Nation in recent history with GM--starting with their abomination of a remap in 1990.
36 CDs and 27 are Republican--so 75% of Texas's population is GOP ?

Technically its both. In the case of Florida, they worked together to ensure some democrats and minority areas were ensured a win, in return for putting all the conservatives in their own district. A democrat is even complaining about this ruling because it might make her district tougher given they made her district almost entirely made up of african-americans. However, I dont see the problem. This way ensures that minorities get a representative, whereas if each district had representative portions of voters, they would all be white.

I dont really see how you do it any different. Whats fair?

You, uh, do realize that it's the Florida GOP that's getting busted for gerrymandering? Or is the Republican party now "progressive?" :)

Simple...what is fair, is not having a political aspect involved in defining districts. There should be only condition for any district.. population. Make up of that population is irrelevant. A district can be huge or small geography wise... it is irrelevant. It is the population size that matters. It would also mean you get rid of the crazy districts what twist and turn to meet some warped conditions on race and party affiliation. All districts should be as square or rectangular as possible.

If you really want to be seen as a nation where race or ethnicity does not matter, then THIS is what you have to do.

I don't give a ****, I'm NOT GOP.....

Progressives however have mastered this craft tho..... I'm from Illinois er Chicago area and these clowns are straight up dirty when they get their way and draw the lines.

1.4 million fewer votes and holding a 33 seat lead in the House would indicate that Republicans are better at it.

rural districts have fewer people in them then the big city districts. republicans win more of the rural districts, democrats win more of the big city districts. that's your difference.

how does a total national vote count point to state level gerrymandering?

It has to be political given the issue is political election districts, and they are decided by politicians, put in place by the political process. I dont see how to do it otherwise. Take an island with 50% of each party, and 25% minority. How do you create two fair districts?

-two squares would ensure a crapshoot on parties and no minority ever being able to win
-a district with mostly one party in each district would ensure each party had representation
-a district with the entire minority in one district would ensure minority representation

Each one is fair depending on your viewpoint. And people will naturally gravitate to communities who agree with them. Which why in florida the panhandle is conservative, and the south is liberal and the center is a mix

Surely you are joking? The ones that are most into gerrymandering are the right-wing conservatives who can't win a race unless they draw wacky boundaries.

This is a ruling AGAINST gerrymandering which was made illegal in Florida in the last election. The most gerrymandered State is Texas, that bastion of progressivism.
