INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Indiana won't recognize hundreds of same-sex marriages that were performed before a federal court halted a lower-court's decision to lift the state's gay marriage ban, the governor's office said Wednesday.

I don't agree with what's going on here. If they issued the licenses? They ought to honor them. Period.

That is not how it works, right or wrong the people that performed the marriages jumped the gun Maggie.

State license, state has final say. Period.

If they got marriage licences from the state of Indiana, they should be recognized. If not? Then I'm okay with it. But I don't think people can "get married" in Indiana without state-sanctioned marriage licenses. Thus my opinion.

If the state issued a license? It's a done deal. You think they should be able to arbitrarily say, "Yeah, we know we issued you a license. But we changed our mind." I sure don't.

If what you say is true than I wonder if those people get their marriage license fees back. I agree, Maggie. Weird!

If there was any doubt before that Mike Pence is genuinely awful...

i strongly disagree with him on most issues. unfortunately, he will probably win again in 2016 after his presidential bid tanks.

some counties issued, and some did not. those who got married during the window in which SSM was legal received licenses.

Yeah a man with morals and values marriage as the institution it is.

SoCON crap. Lots of men have morals and value the Institution of Marriage, but are respectful of other opinions and don't hold their PERSONAL opinion as trump. :doh

Two dudes getting married doesn't lessen my marriage to my wife. Two heteros 'living in sin' doesn't damage my morals. A woman using birth control doesn't get in the way of my path to Salvation. A woman choosing to abort her fetus doesn't block my line of sight to Jesus.

SoCONs have enough on their plate trying to stay straight with Jesus to be leaning over anyone else's biscuit.... :peace

Various American ideological, theological, jurisdictional and just plain obstinate opposition to same sex marriage is really boring.

Either open up marriage to anyone who wants to get married or remove government from the licensing process.

There are a gayzillian other far more important issues to deal with. I don't understand the obsession.

They reserve the right to do that with every other kind of license they issue.....business license, liquor license, to practice law, to appraise realestate, to drive......I don't see why the marriage license should be any different; it's not like you have to brake up if your license is voided.

I agree. Some people here are just terrified senseless about the thought of the same sex unions. I do not understand why you would want to marry your own sex but then in that same breath I see heterosexual couples and have no clue why they would want to be with each other.

But for me it comes down to we are given only one life to live here on earth and what you want to do with that life really shouldn't be anyone else's business. Unless of course you are fornicating with 5 year olds.
For a lot of people though who have shallow lives they feel the need to be involved in everyone else's lives.

Didn't the No-Go Tranny guys teach you about ASS-uming???

Did I say soconsports?

Does SoCON look like soconsports?

SoCON is Social CONservative- I have used it before- but thanks for playing... :2wave:
If the 'CON' is capital then that's an acronym, each letter representing a different word. So if you meant "Social Conservative" you would have typed "SoCon", not "SoCON". Since you didn't type "SoCon" you therefore didn't mean "Social Conservative", and so we're left to guess what in the world you're talking about. You're illiteracy works against you.

Yeah a man with morals and values marriage as the institution it is.

So we should allow polygamous and incestuous marriages in order to preserve traditional marriage? If you want to "preserve marriage as the traditional institution it is," which is an utterly meaningless phrase, you have to be a realist about the history of marriage. "Tradition" is an abstract and arbitrary concept, so it is purely illogical take something that has been done historically and say we should do it purely because it has been done when it has negative consequences on society.

I assume that your opposition to gay marriage comes from a religious standpoint, but I must object to this as well. The U.S. government is not supposed to give a bias to a certain religion or lack thereof, according to the first amendment, nor is it supposed to discriminate upon its citizens. Why on earth do you consider two people wanting to get married something that should be prevented legally, even if you oppose it morally?

i strongly disagree with him on most issues. unfortunately, he will probably win again in 2016 after his presidential bid tanks.

Yeah, that's probably true. He is probably one of the worst current governors (not there are very many good ones).

Not the same thing at all. The others you list are conditional licenses. "As long as you adhere to XYZ . . . " Aside for a smart-aleck comment, what would you do if you suddenly received a letter re your own marriage: "Your marriage is hereby declared null and void."

Seriously: I would celibrate. I'm divorced, remember? The state just saved me all the lawyers fees for getting rid of that crazy bitch.

And if the state voided our wedding when the marriage was good, then we would see how seriously we took our vows in church. Honestly I think in my case we would have seporated sooner if our legal vow was voided because our marriage was doomed before it began, we were just to dumb to see it.

Well you don't understand what the license is for then. The marriage license is a license to marry which means it allows you to have a ceremony and by signing it the celebrant of the wedding endorses the marriage as an officer of the state. Once filed the marriage is legal. No the state can say they don't recognize it but that might mean another trip to the courts where they will tell them they must recognize it.

Your license to marry is a time limited document it isn't the wedding.

Maggie what can you do if that happens?
