Germany arrests Suspected Double Agent spying for U.S.: Lawmakers

Like you said, everyone spies on everyone. After the revelations the Germans probably turned up the heat to find an American spy and embarrass us further.

Lets be careful about firing folks who do the kind of jobs we wouldn't, for pay probably less than their talents because something goes wrong.

Mornin WN. :2wave: This guy was trying to break to the Russians to and our NSA peeps testifying Thursday before this panel. Now we are caught spying on this panel. Unreal.:doh

Anger over reports German double-agent spied for US.....

But several German media outlets said the suspect was working for a US intelligence agency, and had at least once reported on the parliamentary panel examining claims by fugitive US intelligence official Edward Snowden.

According to public broadcaster NDR, the man was initially arrested on suspicion of seeking contact with Russian secret services and, in questioning, apparently admitted having handed information to a US agency. Investigators did not rule out that the suspect had given false information, said NDR, which worked closely with two other media organisations on the initial report.

At clandestine meetings in Austria he sold secret documents to US agents for 25,000 euros ($34,000), it claimed, adding that in searches of his and his partners' homes investigators found at least three documents related to the parliamentary panel, among other things.

"Should this suspicion be confirmed, it would be outrageous" and require "tough diplomatic consequences", opposition Green party lawmaker Konstantin von Notz told business daily Handelsblatt. News weekly Spiegel Online quoted senior Social Democrat lawmaker Thomas Oppermann as saying that, should the suspicions be confirmed, "that is an unheard attack on our parliamentary freedom".....snip~

Mornin HD. :2wave: Someone will be king the heat. It was involving Snowden too. So the Germans just didn't let that go. Like I mentioned....Putin came out a few hours ahead of this and said he wanted to work with the US. Making nicey nice. But then I am willing to bet he knew this was coming down.

I have been following that. One thing I find interesting about it is that the German government is allowing it to escalate. They are under some strain, since it is becoming more and more obvious that the Snowden revelations are more embarrassing for the Germans' politicians and bureaucracy than for the US. After all two witnesses have just underlined that practically everything nsa did was known to the Germans authorities who helped and made much of it possible. That the spying had seemingly been allowed in writing by the chancellor's office and that the German secret service and government had themselves illegally used the information and broken the constitution.

But making the US out to be in some way enemy is rather risky as deception maneuvers go. It is a little troubling, especially as there are rather pressing voices being raised, that demand Germany move away from the USA and closer to Russia. This movement is not new and Schröder's gas deal was almost certainly a planed part of this thrust, but it has gained urgency of late and may be more than just coincidental to the growing call for Germany to take greater responsibility for international security. Many of the same persons and groups fighting against greater responsibility with its higher costs are using this populisticly combined with the demand to align more closely with Russia.

Heya Jog. :2wave: I thought this might catch your attention. I don't think this will be going away to soon. Do you think it all stirs back up Monday?

It is not clear how this is going to play out, but with cabinet heavies weighing in and the Bundespräsident seeing friendship with the USA on the line it is certain not to die down over night. Also it fits some rather disturbing groundswell as I mentioned above while helping the politicians and bureaucracy to deflect from massiv criminal behavior of their own.

Germany would be well within its rights to use diplomatic or economic means to punish the US for this infringement.

Having said that... everyone knows that every nation spies on every other nation to the fullest extent it can.

It is almost certain that the timing is no coincidence. But whether it was the BND trying to create a subterfuge or the government for some yet unknown reason or Putin weighing in is impossible to say.

what is disturbing is how poorly the US is playing the thing.

Heya Jog :2wave: .....that's exactly what it looks like to. How Poorly this Administration is playing this. We will see if they can keep running from it, as the Germans press the issue.

More on this ongoing issue.....which now BO and his team says it was the CIA that brought this about. What say ye?

German leader: US spy reports serious if true.....

German Chancellor Angela Merkel said Monday that if reports that a German intelligence employee spied for the United States are proven true, it would be a "clear contradiction" of trust between the allies.

German prosecutors say the man is suspected of handing over 218 documents between 2012 and 2014. German media, without naming sources, have reported he was an employee of Germany's foreign intelligence service who says he sold his services to the U.S.

German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier said if the allegations of U.S. involvement were true, the case could change the routine for the two countries in unspecified ways.....snip~

German leader: US spy reports serious if true

An employee of Germany's BND foreign intelligence agency has been arrested on suspicion of spying for the United States, two lawmakers with knowledge of the affair told Reuters on Friday. The German Federal Prosecutor's office said in a statement that a 31-year-old man had been arrested on suspicion of being a foreign spy, but it gave no further details. Investigations were continuing, it said.

The case risks further straining ties with Washington, which were damaged by revelations last year of mass surveillance of German citizens by the U.S. National Security Agency, including the monitoring of Chancellor Angela Merkel's mobile phone.

The man, who is German, has admitted passing to an American contact details about a special German parliamentary committee set up to investigate the spying revelations made by former U.S. intelligence contractor Edward Snowden, the politicians said.

Both lawmakers are members of the nine-person parliamentary control committee, whose meetings are confidential, and which is in charge of monitoring the work of German intelligence agencies.....snip~

Germany arrests suspected double agent spying for U.S.: lawmakers

It appears we will be having some more trouble with Germany. They have summoned the US Ambassador to give a swift explanation. Even though they state he is suspected. I think once he admitted to any connection.....puts him past just being suspected of anything. What say ye?

An even further erosion of a relationship with a close ally. It's this American exceptionalist bull**** that pisses me off. Why is it that we feel that we have to be the master manipulators of the world and put our fingers in EVERYTHING?

No comment.:peace
It will be below zero in hell before I have anything to say about this.:peace

Then leave and stop wasting our time lazily telling us you don't want to talk about it. This is a debate forum after all.

Mornin RA. :2wave: Hard to believe isn't it.....also Team BO says this was a Standard Op with CIA. Yet they the Germans, busted this guy going to the Russians. Which now they have him saying 218 documents was passed to our people.

I think we are past the Germans saying If it is discovered. Looks like this guy is singing his heart out. Wonder if they will point out what he was trying to do with the Russians.

Exclusive: CIA had role in Germany spy affair.....

The Central Intelligence Agency was involved in a spying operation against Germany that led to the alleged recruitment of a German intelligence official and has prompted renewed outrage in Berlin, two U.S. officials familiar with the matter said on Monday.

CIA Director John Brennan has asked to brief key members of the U.S. Congress on the matter, which threatens a new rupture between Washington and a close European ally, one of the officials said.

The U.S. officials who confirmed the CIA's role spoke on condition of anonymity, and offered no further details.....snip~

Iraq has totally left the news. This didn't pop up in the top 5 news stories this morning. Scary.

Not unusual at all. Cheney has kept his mouth shut, the president has made his moves. We just had a long weekend with the United States not being involved in the goings on in Iraq and having ISIS or IS as they want to be called now taking over another village or two is not new news. All it will take if for Cheney or McCain to open their mouth again or the president to do something towards Iraq and it will be back up there as number one again.

All I can say, is appreciate the lull.

Though, I doubt it, there was some indication in German radio that the man might be a plant or a dumb dumb that the agencies did not think very important. That is not, however, the line the present official line, which says friendship is at risk and/or the Americans don't think Germany is a friend. The politicians and public are also acting as if this were surprising Germany being the reliable friend it has always been and proof that they must re-gauge the US relationship.

Mornin BS :2wave: ......not really. I have been catching it all coming in over the wire and with any Hot news.

The bad news is.....they walked away from another parliamentary meeting with no other to be set up until August. Which means things will stand as they are. As for the rest.....the Iraqis are digging in.

Morning. I try to gauge what the typical American is reading on a daily basis by popping in google news and yahoo news. It freaks me out.

Well looks like we will be having some problems going forward. As it is clear now they wont be trust to much of what BO has to say. Moreover the incompetence by this administration is just staggering.

With many other Leaders Openly mocking him and his team.....should be a sign to the GOP leadership and what Needs to be done.

Yeah I get Yahoo.....some weekends you have to go past the first 30-40 stories of news one just cant use. ;)

ISIS Set to Destroy Biblical History.....

Indeed, museum curators and staff were no better prepared than any other part of the Iraqi government. They could have learned from al-Baghdadi’s operations in neighboring Syria that a major source of revenue for his insurgency has been the sale of looted antiquities on the black market. As reported in The Guardian, a windfall of intelligence just before Mosul fell revealed that al-Baghdadi had accumulated a $2 billion war chest, in part by selling off ancient artifacts from captured Syrian sites. But the Iraqi officials concerned with antiquities said the Iraqi intelligence officers privy to that information have not shared it with them.

“So we are asking Americans and Europeans—especially Americans—to understand the gravity of the situation,” said Qureishi, and “to put pressure on the governments of their countries to intervene militarily.”.....snip~

I'd be suspicious of any confession given under the "care" of a foreign government.

Problem is, the damage is rather grave.

One problem is that many Germans want to believe it. The way they are treating the Snowden thing is indicative. While almost everything that NSA did here in Germany was condoned by the German government and assisted by German agencies the criticism of The Americans goes on and on and on and on.... This is while the massive law breaking and circumventing of the law by the German agencies and politicians as well as the fact that they had allowed American agencies access and the right to do what they did without seemingly legal basis and in many cases against German law is mostly ignored.

I'd be suspicious of any confession given under the "care" of a foreign government.

Mornin TNE. :2wave: I agree and they did bust him going to the Russians. What I am wondering is.....how will BO try and cover this up. As the Germans will not be letting this go.

Problem is, the damage is rather grave.

I think so to Jog.....this is like a slap in their face after their last inquiry. Now to have our people spy on what they were looking into with Snowden was just plain stupid.

Add in that he increased the Risk of harm on all Americans overseas and our Assets. Then his major screw up with Syria and ISIS.

Its time we ran this fool out of office.

Mornin Pero. :2wave: Well we did up the alert level for Airports. Just sayin!

The way I understand that is it applied to overseas airports, not domestic.

Yeah anything coming to the US. But I did put up what TSA said yesterday in the thread I have up in Breaking News.

It will stay like that and will be adding more Airports from other regions too.
