The 11-day search for a missing child in Detroit took a bizarre turn on Wednesday, when the 12-year-old was found hiding in the basement of his father’s home.
The perplexing case unfolded on live television when, during an interview on HLN, the boy’s father, Charles Bothuell, was informed that his son Charlie had been found in the basement.
The incredulous father appeared bewildered and breathless, taking a moment to recover. “I checked my basement,” Bothuell said. “The FBI checked my basement. The police checked my basement. My wife checked my basement. I’ve been down there several times. We’ve all been checking.”

This brings up so many questions -- How did they not find him? The family was in the basement, the FBI was in the basement, the Detroit police were in the basement. I will be interested in following this to see what happened.

There are allegations of abuse coming up now.

Did you watch the video? Do you think the Dad is faking it?

I, at first, watched this on the Today Show, and they didn't say anything about the child being barricaded in the basement. Just said that they found him there. Even then, I thought the Dad's reactions were a little over the top and staged. Had it been me? I wouldn't have continued to sit there, gasping in surprise. I would have been ripping off the mic and running home.

The boy could have been missing and just finally went home.

This story reminds me of that boy who supposedly flew off in a homemade balloon his father created but was later found hiding in the attic and claimed on live tv they were doing it to get a reality show. Seems people are willing to do anything to get attention these days...

That was my assessment as well, having seen the clip on the news this morning. Fortunately the child is alive and over time he'll be able to fill the authorities in on what happened to him in the home. I'll have to reserve judgement, however, because I don't know how the child being "missing" came to the attention of the authorities - several scenarios come to mind, but it's all just speculation at this point.

Excellent point!! I'd forgotten about that one.

Yeah, you're right - I remember that.

I don't know - all I know is the whole story is just weird. How did they not find the boy? How did he turn up later on? They didn't give any indication of what kind of shape he's in. Is he healthy? Does he show signs of abuse? Malnutrition?

This really brings up more questions, than answers, at this point.

I am with you. I would have run out of the room.

This is the original article I saw.

SEE IT: Dad learns his missing son is alive in family's basement

It's unclear why the missing boy staked out in his own home for nearly two weeks, but sources told My Fox Detriot reported police are investigating possible child abuse charges against his father.

Well, we don't have enough information to really know what happened, but the idea that the father didn't know that his son was in the basement and that the FBI and LEOs searched it as well is incredulous. Unless the father brought him back to the basement after it was searched...

Keep your eyes on dad. The cops certainly are.

Or the stepmom brought him back. That's what it might be shaping up to look like. Maybe the father was abusing the boy, so the stepmom helped him to hide. She fed him, gave him water, helped him hide when the police were there, etc. Blue_State posted a link that said that an "escape tunnel" had been fabricated so he could get in and out if he needed to.

Yeah I had the same thoughts. We have seen this movie before.

The boy is 12 so he will tell what happened. He wasn't there the whole time. The dogs wouldn't have missed him!
