Dad searched how long it takes animal to die in hot car before child left in hot car

Re: Dad searched how long it takes animal to die in hot car before child left in hot

I second that. Having your own children provides a unique prospective on the innocence and helplessness that characterize young children.

You mention Susan Smith. We all hate to hear stories like that where young children are harmed but sometimes when it's buy a person who's clearly mentally ill it's somewhat more understandable if not more bearable. We don't like it but we can make sense of it when kids are harmed at the hands of a severely mentally ill person. In a way it makes sense. however when there is no mental illness, as appears in to be the case with this guy, what can we point to as a reason? Pure evil? it makes it worse in my opinion.

Nah, I can never make sense of what Smith did. I also know they say Andrea Yates was mentally ill, and I'll never make sense of what she did either. Both of them knew what they were doing. One covered up her actions, one called the police and reported her actions.

I am anti-Death Penalty, but if the prison van he is being transported in decides to swing by a Piggly Wiggly to pick up some snacks and leaves him in the van for few hours with the windows rolled up while the driver chats up the girl at the counter I wouldn't necessarily object.

If there is truth to this story, and what you suggested here actually happened to him, not only wouldn't I necessarily object, I'd actually smile.

Just make sure the doors are locked so he gets NO relief.

His child certainly didn't.

What a sicko.

Didnt read the article just from the Op I think it would be too distrubing.

I guess my point is sometimes the intent makes the crime all that much worse, at least from my point of view. It's one thing for a person who truly cannot understand the difference between right and wrong or someone who is under immediate, intense duress to commit a violent crime but it's an altogether different thing when a violent crime is planned and casually executed by someone in their right mind who understands what the are doing is wrong. i call it evil. It's real and it exists.

I don't wish to derail the thread, but I feel compelled to speak up about Andrea Yates because it's a case I'm very familiar with. "Insanity" is a legal term, and Yates's jury couldn't find her legally insane because she made that phone call. However, the conviction was overturned by an appellate court, and she was found guilty by reason of insanity.

And mentally disturbed she was. Her mental illness was well documented long before she killed her five children. If you want to talk about evil, I think a strong example is her husband, Rusty Yates. He knew after the second baby that she should never have another child because she experienced the most extreme (5%) post-partum depression a woman can have.

Curiously, when she delivered her last baby, the little girl, and her father died and she attempted suicide, Rusty Yates did not take her to her psychiatrist of record. Instead, he took her to a doc-in-the-box. She was catatonic, but once she was able to grunt a "Yes" or "No," she was released AND taken off the one medication that stopped her hallucinations. Less than two weeks later, all her children were dead, drowned to save them from the eternal damnation Andrea Yates was sure her poor mothering would doom them to.

According to CNN...

It's unknown when the Internet search was conducted and whether the father did the searching. Police have declined comment when asked about the computer search.

Obviously if this happened before his ass is grass.

Do you think her children knew she was mentally ill, or if that mattered to them?

Of course not but the existence of which thing in the world bothers you more? Mental illness or evil?

I don't think it matters for the victims. Who cares about why the crime was commited?

Because we don't punished people for crimes just for the victims. We also want to know why crimes are committed in order to help us figure out ways to prevent those crimes from being committed, if we can.

There's that and there's also the fact that our minds, most of us anyway, are inclined to seek out logical reasons for why things happen. We need to make sense of our world and mental illness which leads to violence is a bad thing but at least we can make sense of it.

Do you really think Susan Smith was insane?

It was premeditated and she also tried to cover it up. That doesn't fall in line with insane.

I have no idea. I'm just saying that if she was, that is to be taken into account. Justice isn't really about the victim, but rather society. Justice is not served by treating every thing that leads to the same result for a victim the same way because humans are not perfect. Intent plays a major role in justice.

You didn't say that you simply didn't think she was really insane, but rather "who cares why" the crime was committed. I gave you why we care "why", not for that specific case exactly, but rather in general.

I know what the appellate court did. And if I was on a jury, I would have convicted her too.

Lots of people have post partum depression and husbands worse than hers. They don't kill their children. She also knew enough to wait until her husband & MIL left the house. Then she called the cops. I have no sympathy for her. I hope she's miserable for every day left in her life for what she did to those children.

She personified evil.
