News from The Associated Press

LOS ANGELES (AP) -- Casey Kasem, the internationally famous radio host with the cheerful manner and gentle voice who became the king of the top 40 countdown with a syndicated show that ran for decades, died Sunday. He was 82.
Danny Deraney, publicist for Kasem's daughter, Kerri, says Kasem died Sunday morning. A statement issued by the family says he died at 3:23 a.m. on Father's Day morning surrounded by family and friends at a Washington state hospital.

As a kid I always thought he had a great voice on the radio.

What does this have to do with politics?

You can usually find a political connection in anything.

As for Kasem, he was a prominent spokesmen for Arab-American acceptance. Pre-9/11 there wasn't much of an cause to advocate but I do remember him coming to my city as part of an Americans of Arab heritage panel and to endorse one of our candidates for mayor who was also of Arab heritage.

As an FYI I think his roots were Lebanese who are significantly if not majority Christian making them different than most Arabs both in Lebanon and immigrants and their defendants here.

Longtime host of American Top 40. Network image voice for NBC, the guy who says "tonight at 8, 7 central on NBC." Voice of Shaggy on the Scooby Doo cartoons.

RIP Kasey - very sad.

The events surrounding his death are just diabolically tragic.

Mainstream Media posts don't have to do only with politics.

I agree, RIP Casey Kasem. What events are you talking about?

I grew up with Casey Kasem in the form of Shaggy. So many good childhood memories from that show.

I think thats implied in a Political Debate forum. There is an Off Topic section for everything else.

RIP, and may his family begin to heal.

I used to listen to him on the radio, late at night, while driving between Amarillo and Abilene when I was but a wee bairn.

While I think a lot of the music was great back in the day, radio has always sucked. I remember listening to Casey and he'd do the countdown and I'd think.. "Really? Off that whole kick ass album THIS is what the 'hit song' is by this band?" I liked Casey though. Great voice for radio.

Back then they always skimped on the rock and would only air the cheeseball ballads off the rock albums. So frustrating. But like always, radio continues with its payola playlists with little or no repercussions and keeping it to what seems like a list around 10 songs or so on constant repeat.
