Bergdahl says he was tortured by Taliban captors

Re: Who Do You Believe? A soldier or the soldiers?

Every unit has disciplinary problems, particularly an army unit in a combat zone. I think what is happening here is that the administration is trying to muddle the reputation of the unit to try and discredit first hand accounts of Berghdhals desertion. Funny how they try and discredit Berghdhals unit, but somehow separate Berghdhal from his unit as if he was the only good soldier in it. Even if his unit lacked discipline, he was part of that unit as well.

Re: Who Do You Believe? A soldier or the soldiers?

True, and I think that is precisely what I think was happening....A false narrative is being laid out, and the disgusting attack of the character of honorable soldiers, while they lift up a deserter at best, is disgusting.

I think he should be court martialed and in the very least given a dishonorable discharge.

Where did I quote the taliban? I referred to the 6 now 15 soldiers that came forward who served with this deserter. Do not claim I took the word of the taliban. You need to correct that post or apologize that is BS.

Well, you seem to be taking the Taliban's word over Bergdahl's, so I guess you'll believe anyone.

You titled the thread, "Bergdahl claims he was tortured by his Taliban captors". You then call into question his honesty. That suggests to me that you don't believe he was tortured, and the Taliban denies it tortures its captives. Isn't that a clear "who do you believe?" question? So, who do you believe? Bergdahl or the Taliban?

Re: Who Do You Believe? A soldier or the soldiers?

He had been with the Taliban for 5 years and was healthy. Would I have left him with the Taliban, that depends. Would I leave him with the Taliban if what it takes to free him kills more Americans? Yes. Would I leave him with the Taliban if I knew where he was and had a team of soldiers that could go in and get him? No. Of course I would go in and get him out of there regardless. If anything, the bring him home and put him on trial for what seems to be, quite a bit of evidence pointing to him leaving his post.

No doctor has declared him "healthy" being with the Taliban. NONE.

Your Un-American attitude shows greatly that you would leave a soldier to trial by media instead of at least giving him the opportunity to speak in his own defense. Pathetic. Go to Iran.

I hate to drag out this dead horse but it seems many of the people so dedicated to due process during the trial of he who shall not be named (but it stars with a Z) have suddenly abandoned that principle in this case. There is way too much we don't know and frankly, probably never will to judge this young man the way I see some doing.

If Bergdahl is a deserter, that pretty much colors everything else we find out.

I never said, wrote or even implied belief in the Taliban over the deserter. I clearly questioned his account based on the statements of his fellow soldiers and made that 100% clear. You can spin it however you want but in doing so here you lied. Your spin is a lie, a pathetic attack in my character and I won't stand for it. Ignored from this point out.

But I thought according to our more liberal members, that the Taliban isn't a terrorist group. Hmmm.

The Taliban tortures it's own people (if they don't fall into line)... why wouldn't they torture an "infidel"?

Quite. I certainly wouldn't believe a word those bastards say, so why create a thread that throws doubt on Bergdahl's reported claims that he was tortured?

How would his fellow soldiers have any idea what happened to him during his period of captivity? What they might know about the circumstances of his being taken captive have absolutely no bearing on whether or not he was tortured. I don't know whether you're spinning, but you're certainly conflating two completely different issues, and seem to hate the idea that you've been caught out doing so.

Hysterical over-reaction is...hysterical!

The difference here - When one of our POWs is tortured in captivity we are outraged. When a deserter is captured by the enemy and tortured, that contains an element of delicious irony and it's a bit harder to be outraged.

Btw, what would have happened if we had caught the deserter before the enemy did? Leavenworth, breaking large rocks into smaller ones. As close to torture as we can legally come.

In an overall sense, I am skeptical of Bergdahl and reserving judgment, but on this particular point he may indeed be telling the truth. It is quite likely.

Bergdahl says he was tortured by Taliban captors

Just curious. This is the first report I've seen that this soldier we traded for in Afghanistan has said anything? I'll be curious to know who is directing his comments? Are these his words or has the obummer regime given him the best PR firm a government can buy?

These comments are almost to politically correct. His email, his statements as reported by others and the concerns many had about his collaboration, treason and desertion are they "swift boating" him? Is that orchestrated by Fox? I see at least 6 young men coming forward and blasting this man....so do you believe one or six?

It is always suspect when statements like these come out only after the accused has had time to prepare the statements.

If Bergdahl is a deserter, there is surely less outrage.

"healthy" is a vague term which can have many definitions. He was no more unhealthy then his captors. Look at the average Taliban fighter and you will see they are also very "unhealthy" just do to the nature of their profession. You can't live in a cave and run from place to place living off the meager wildlife in desolate area's and live a "healthy" life. The average age someone dies in Afghanistan is 58 years old. It only makes sense that he would suffer a bit health wise living like the average afghan for 5 years. So the term is relative. And any health issues he has are a result of living like an afghan Taliban fighter for 5 years, not from torture. Ask some WW2 POW's what they went thru and you will see what real torture is. What Bergdahl went thru was heaven in comparison.

Re: Who Do You Believe? A soldier or the soldiers?

You expect there to be links that show evidence what occurred on a remote battlefield in Afghanistan is true or not?

There should be some sort of documentation that states where they were stationed.

Who has more reason to make up a story here?

1.The people who do not like Obama encouraged terrorists to kidnap Americans.
2.People who want the 15 minutes of fame.Remember Jessie MacBeth?

The soldiers don't get anything out of making up a story.
We know this how?

And don't you think it is a bit odd that all their stories seem to coincide with each other.
You do not think they talked to each other before being on TV?

I have not heard stories from anyone in his unit that contradict what has been said.

How many people from his alleged unit have you heard?

The administration has quite a few reasons to try and brush this under the rug by marring it in misinformation.

THe people against Obama also have quite a few reasons to try to make this story something it isn't.
They have an election to win this next year.

Obama does not have an election to win.

The soldiers that spoke out are lucky to even get proper medical care after their stint in a battle zone in Afghanistan. They have no aspirations that could be potentially damaged by this.
You do not know that.

He probably was at the least beaten.

Not to be too partisan one way or another but did you realize that GWB released 500 prisoners?

Consider the difference between these headlines:

"Man who had .01 oz of marijuana still accidentally in his bag when he got off the plane from Colorado in New York released on bail."

or:

"Sadistic sociopath with a history of successfully evading the police, who violently murdered and raped three teenage girls and has promised to do the same if he ever gets the chance, released on bail."

All prisoners are not exactly created equal.

Nonetheless, it's like I said earlier, GWB did release 500 terrorists.

Look at it this way: Society decides to release 500 people from prison at random. How many of them were hot wiring cars and how many of them were serial killers; it's something to ponder.

500 prisoners. Some of whom have since either become terrorists or returned to terrorism, a fact which should give us pause before we release more, and none of whom were the quality of bad guy that these guys were.

No it's not. That is an amazingly unattached defense of the President releasing the Taliban's Starting Lineup just in time for them to get plugged in for the offensive following our withdrawal. It has literally no bearing on whether or not that was a wise decision whatsoever.
