The uncooperative victim and mother in this case must have contributed to the misdemeanor charge I'm thinking because I believe sexual assault of a minor is a felony. Like Maggie said, possibly some money was traded to the victim to sort of just forget about it.
I really didn't want to see him tucked away for life, but I think five years would have been fair, or 2 years and electronic monitoring for 3.
I read about the case this morning in the paper, but I don't believe the victim was a "minor" at the time of the alleged "abuse." Obviously it's a sick crime but if she was older than 17 it's not a crime.
Maybe there was evidence that suggested something happened when she was a minor, however she was uncooperative - and even minors have Fifth Amendment rights.
I'm interested to know what evidence the DA actually had considering the lack of cooperation.
Of course the DA could have just over charged him and the jury could only convict on the evidence alone.
Either way it is a sick alleged crime.
