Texas Sen. Ted Cruz has won the latest presidential straw poll at a conservative summit in Louisiana.

Cruz took 30 percent of the vote at the Republican Leadership Conference in New Orleans. He edged out conservative speaker and author Ben Carson.

What doe's anyone think about this?

My thoughts are that neither Cruz, nor Carson will ever see the inside of the White House except as guests.

I doubt that either one of them will be the GOP's candidate.

Cruz is a dumbo.
Dr. Carson is discredited.

Too much political ammo against them.
Don't get me wrong, their base and a lot of the tea party will vote for them. So say, that gives them 30-35% of the vote. But the independents won't vote for them and I think republicans who don't hate government won't vote for them.
Carson may have a better chance than Cruz because he didn't shut down the government due to stupidity but he has showed himself to be a utterly defunct from a mental standpoint. He said a whole lot of BS about obamacare... said that Lenin was for socialized medicine because it was the arc on which socialism stands or some crap like that which Lenin never said. And that's just 1 example of many.

The problem with straw polls is that they show which candidate is more appealing to their base. And that's not what the republicans need. You have the base. get people who are not in your base. The independents and those confused.

Straw polls are a pretty bad indicator of future nominees. They tend to be held at events that draw the True Believers. The moderate Republicans (or Dems) who generally decide primaries don't get a say in those. In fact, at some straw polls, a vote in the poll is contingent on a donation. I pay them no heed.

Organizers at the annual conference say about a third out of 1,500 delegates voted in the straw poll. Delegates had to pay to register for the conference and vote in the straw poll.

So 500 people of the 1,500 present were allowed to vote, and paid for the privilege. Small sample size, skewed poll base ... meaningless.

The first words out of my mouth were going to be "pppffft...straw polls."

It shocks me, to be honest. Neither of them give me the impression that they could garner hroad support.

Cruz ? Mr. lets dismantle Social Security ?

Hahaha ! :lamo

This is why the Republicans will loose...again.

Rand Paul would be my first choice for 2016 GOP nominee as he is simply poison to the party, the ticket and most of the nation. If he cannot get it, a crazy like Cruz might be the next best thing.

Who cares?

Both parties are staggeringly corrupt and/or ignorant.

Whomever wins in 2016 (from either party), they will make the country much worse during their term.

When will the ignorant masses wake up...probably when it's too late.

meaningless poll as far as i am concerned.

cruz has NO chance of winning the presidency in 2016!!

It has become increasingly likely that the GOP will have no one to field that isn't crazy.

What really matters is the we maintain the gridlock. Heaven forbid we get one party everywhere.

Didn't Ron Paul win many straw polls as well? Didn't turn out too be much hope for him either.

Which simply means that we keep feeding a huge and expensive federal nanny state that gets little done. ;)

Better than growing it even more.

It grows itself with "mandatory" spending and all sorts of "crisis" and "emergency" additions to the continuing resolutions which have apparently replaced the need for a "budget". ;)

That's all you got, Cruz is a dumbo? You are discredited, you did it to yourself. That's an asinine statement to make since he's nowhere close to stupid. You may not like him, but he isn't stupid. And he'd kick Hillary's ass in any debate.

My take on the top 3 potential candidates from the straw poll outcome:

1. Senator Cruz: He is bright (his educational record is not that of someone who is intellectually-challenged), but lightly experienced. His lack of experience was most pronounced when he was ready to push the proverbial economic nuclear button by trying to block a debt ceiling increase in a battle he simply could not have won. There was no real strategy in place and no contingency for the White House's only possible approach (rejection of the ACA-related demands). In the end, the battle was lost. If he spends the next year or two carving out at least some tangible achievements and becoming familiar with the nation's domestic and foreign policy issues, that would help him.

2. Ben Carson: A possible 2016 Herman Cain-type candidate. Out of his league. He has no leadership or governance experience (state or national/legislative or executive levels). He has had no exposure to foreign policy or foreign leaders. Not a serious contender if he somehow makes it through the GOP primary process. Would represent a wild and reckless throw of the proverbial dice.

3. Senator Paul: Not the complete neo-isolationist that his father is. Has tried to claim the Realist foreign policy mantle, but would be out of place among prominent Realists i.e., Robert Gates, Brent Scowcroft, etc. The big question concerns whether he can evolve into developing a coherent and credible domestic and foreign policy vision and then whether he can rebrand the "Paul" reputation, which has largely been defined by his father's vision. Another question concerns whether he can demonstrate an ability to govern, which requires trade-offs and compromises, something his father showed no inclination to do. His strongest point is his support of civil liberties protections. Right now, he would still be out of the GOP mainstream and would probably wind up losing the nomination and would very likely be uncompetitive in a national race.

In any case, straw polls are inherently bad indicators. They are not representative nor scientific in nature.

Ted Cruz would be no different for all his "small government" claims...he would no solution...correct?

He may want a smaller federal gov't role but has little control over what our congress critters actually pass. The POTUS can only veto bills but cannot independently make the law.

Thanks for affirming that the "smaller govenment" schtick is bogus.

Budgets have never stopped the inexorable growth of government. It is the spenders who make the budgets.

You mean SS isn't already dismantled?

IMO, this is the narrative frustrated or ineffective leaders all too often promote. The reality is that effective governance requires building and sustaining relationships across party lines, which makes it possible for people who disagree to sound one another out in an honest fashion, develop an incentive to find common ground, avoid destructive posturing in areas where they differ, and have the trust in one another to reach agreements.

President Reagan demonstrated this over and over again in making progress toward his overall policy goals. President Clinton learned this and was able to reach many of his overall policy goals, particularly during his second term. In contrast, approaches where the President chooses a sort of insulation from the Legislative Branch or embraces a passive view that leaves the policy initiative largely or solely to Congress can only lead to an ineffectual Presidency.

Cruz for president and Rand for vice president would be a pretty good ticket.
