US soldier freed from captivity in Afghanistan

You mean like the Republicans who refused to grant additional funding for embassy security?

Your thread drifting.

The funding for State Department security comes from the State Department service and maintenance appropriations and Hillary Clinton decided to use those funds for green cars, electric refueling stations for those cars and booze, lots of booze for partying at Embassies.

It was considered "half true" by Politifact...there's plenty of mud to be thrown by both sides.

Heya Glen. :2wave: Yeah half true on the Politics about it.....but Mullen's came back with the ARB and reported the amount. Also it says nothing for the State dept having cash on hand to at least put the iron gates back on the Front of the Building. You know.....the basics.

How is the determination made on which prisoners are to be released from Guantanamo? Length of incarceration; some type of numbering system; where they were captured; overall health; were they specifically requested by the negotiators, or something else? I am curious.

Greetings, MMC. :2wave:

Heya Lady P......the Taliban gave us a List, with their Names on them. These guys are leader types for the Taliban. Their version of Commanders or Officers.

Also the bottomline.....Qatar can't be trusted to prevent them from doing anything to anyone.

Has his guilt been proven in court? Or do you believe that we should start assuming guilt without a trial?

Have you ever seen people make claims and accusations that weren't true? You really need to be careful about lending too much credence to "other people...said". There's been a LOT of people put in jail on eyewitness testimony that turned out to be wrong or an outright lie.

When there is a group of solider's that put their lives on the line, and some lost those lives, to 'find' this guy, I tend to believe them. WTF reason would they have to lie?

You mean like the Republicans who refused to grant additional funding for embassy security?

No blame on your side eh? Can only shift it to that other guy eh? LOL. Such partisan hackery. So if you can drop the BS for a moment, can you answer the question: Has anyone been punished for Benganzi?

I was wondering why he kept getting promoted.....was it due to being Captured? I didn't know one could be promoted for such.

In todays Obama PC military I suppose you can be promoted for desertion, surrendering to the enemy, dressing in drag but don't ever piss on the dead corpse of the enemy who killed Americans. Obama will order a court martial. I **** you not.

I'm just glad that he's free. You guys can fistfight about the partisan angle.

There is nothing 'partisan' about it, no matter how much you want that to be true. There are a lot of questions about this guy and this deal, why do you not want to address any of it? You one of those that believes government can do no wrong (or do no wrong when it's the guys you like in charge)?

Well.....I just never heard of one while being in captivity that they would keep getting promoted.

Good thing back in our day it didn't happen. Just think WTH could have happened. If Johnny Quest ended up with Stars on his Shoulders, rather than in his eyes.

Thomas Owens Forwarded from Jeff Howard.

"We were at OP Mest, Paktika Province, Afghanistan. It was a small outpost where B Co 1-501st INF (Airbone) ran operations out of, just an Infantry platoon and ANA counterparts there. The place was an Afghan graveyard. Bergdahl had been acting a little strange, telling people he wanted to "walk the earth" and kept a little journal talking about how he was meant for better things. No one thought anything about it. He was a little “out there”. Next morning he's gone. We search everywhere, and can't find him. He left his weapon, his kit, and other sensitive items. He only took some water, a compass and a knife. We find some afghan kids shortly after who saw an american walking north asking about where the taliban are. We get hits on our voice intercepter that Taliban has him, and we were close. We come to realize that the kid deserted his post, snuck out of camp and sought out Taliban… to join them. We were in a defensive position at OP Mest, where your focus is to keep people out. He knew where the blind spots were to slip out and that's what he did. It was supposed to be a 4-day mission but turned into several months of active searching. Everyone was spun up to find this guy. News outlets all over the country were putting out false information. It was hard to see, especially when we knew the truth about what happened and we lost good men trying to find him. PFC Matthew Michael Martinek, Staff Sgt. Kurt Robert Curtiss, SSG Clayton Bowen, PFC Morris Walker, SSG Michael Murphrey, 2LT Darryn Andrews, were all KIA from our unit who died looking for Bergdahl. Many others from various units were wounded or killed while actively looking for Bergdahl. Fighting Increased. IEDs and enemy ambushes increased. The Taliban knew that we were looking for him in high numbers and our movements were predictable. Because of Bergdahl, more men were out in danger, and more attacks on friendly camps and positions were conducted while we were out looking for him. His actions impacted the region more than anyone wants to admit. There is also no way to know what he told the Taliban: Our movements, locations, tactics, weak points on vehicles and other things for the enemy to exploit are just a few possibilities. The Government knows full well that he deserted. It looks bad and is a good propaganda piece for the Taliban. They refuse to acknowledge it. Hell they even promoted him to Sergeant which makes me sick. I feel for his family who only want their son/brother back. They don’t know the truth, or refuse to acknowledge it as well. What he did affected his family and his whole town back home, who don’t know the truth. Either way what matters is that good men died because of him. He has been lying on all those Taliban videos about everything since his “capture”. If he ever returns, he should be tried under the UCMJ for being a deserter and judged for what he did. Bergdahl is not a hero, he is not a soldier or an Infantryman. He failed his brothers. Now, sons and daughters are growing up without their fathers who died for him and he will have to face that truth someday."

If this is true...this guy needs to see the inside of a jail cell because no telling what plots they dreamed up while he was their "prisoner" to use against the usa once he arrives...plus the release of 5 others. That is SIX now ready to wreck havoc on us.

Something stinks.

(George Washington himself said that the death penalty is to be considered for those who commit torture of prisoners)

George Washington also ordered the torture of prisoners, as well as stood by while he knew what was going on, doing nothing to stop it. /historylesson

Time for another phony Republican "select" committee".
How many more tens and hundreds of millions of dollars can we waste GOPs?
And let's make sure it goes through the 2014 election like all the others .

Hey Arbo.

As soon as some (Obama supporters) found out that Obama again has broken the law, they made it a partisan issue.

****, I'm still trying to find out why my tax money is being used by ICE for transporting illegal aliens who were caught crossing the border and are being dropped off at the bus depot in Phoenix, Arizona ?

And the times are so related to each other, now and then, aren't they arbo ?

You apache are always the first to make anything Obama a partisan issue, and then accuse Obama supporters of such a lie.
Once again, apache who has admitted he can't stand having Obama as his C-in-C, accuses Obama of breaking the law.
We need another phony GOP "select" committee .

It makes sense that they would want their leaders released - we probably would, too, but we're not terrorists. Has McCain had anything to say about the swap? I missed it if he did.

I was wondering why he kept getting promoted.....was it due to being Captured? I didn't know one could be promoted for such.

Why did he keep getting promoted ???

Is this a new Obama policy ?

Hey, in my entire life I've never heard of any member serving in the U.S. military being promoted while being held captive by the enemy.

It use to be the custom of the British military, once you became a captive (POW) your pay stopped. I don't know if that's the policy today but it was during WW ll.

Yeah.....that's why I threw that up there. This guys walks off and deserts his post. Leaving others open to attack. Gets captured.....then gets promoted not once. But twice.

Go back to the start of this thread and start reading.

Read each one of my post.

As soon as cwill reminded us who this "sad sack" deserter was, you noticed all of the vets on the DP having a change in opinion.

Obama name wasn't even brought up until members of Congress brought up that Obama broke the law. It wasn't I who accused Obama of breaking the law it was Congress. I didn't even know about this law until yesterday afternoon. So don't be making **** up.

You mean the same Benghazi BS that's been through eight investigations where the right wing STILL couldn't come up with anything that could stick?

Do you remember Whitewater? Benghazi's the same thing - just another baseless excuse for political witch-hunting, grandstanding, and fund-raising.

Here you go Apahce.....and its not just about BO going around Congress with a time period. Its the Other Part that is required. From early Post 53.

The White House agreed that actions were taken in spite of legal requirements and cited "unique and exigent circumstances" as justification.

Rep. Howard "Buck" McKeon of California and Sen. James Inhofe of Oklahoma said in a statement that Obama is required by law to notify Congress 30 days before any terrorists are transferred from the U.S. facility. They said Obama also is required to explain how the threat posed by such terrorists has been substantially mitigated.

In response, the White House said it moved as quickly as possible given the opportunity that arose to secure Bergdahl's release. Citing "these unique and exigent circumstances," the White House said a decision was made to go ahead with the transfer despite the legal requirement of 30 days advance notice to Congress.....snip~

GOP lawmakers: Prisoner exchange violated law

Note, how team BO. Forgot the other part and focused on the time-constraint.

Got a reference for that?

Read Logan Beirne's "Blood of Tyrants, George Washington and the forging of the presidency"…. he has all the references you'll need.

You mean the same Benghazi BS that's been through eight investigations where the right wing STILL couldn't come up with anything that could stick?

Yeah, the one where the current administration has hid documents and had a sec. of state that gave us that classic line about 'what does it matter'… If the lives of 4 american's didn't matter to them then, why does the life of this one, that is most likely a deserter, matter enough to release 5 killers?

When there is a group of solider's that put their lives on the line, and some lost those lives, to 'find' this guy, I tend to believe them. WTF reason would they have to lie?

Yeah, soldiers are SPECIAL - they never, ever tell a lie about people they don't like, do they? And they'd never frag someone either, would they?

FYI, soldiers in the field, while they are being called to do things above and beyond anything civilians face, are still HUMAN, and are still subject to all human failings, including lying about what others did or did not do. I almost lost my Navy career because some idiot decided to make up crap about me because I wouldn't give him a locker that he wanted. Later on, I almost lost my Navy career again because I pointed out to the Medical Officer that yes, we did have asbestos in our engine room, despite all the denials by the Chief Engineer. I went through a year of hell afterwards...and it was only at the end of that, that I found out why I was going through so much crap.

So THAT, sir, is why there must be a trial where one's guilt or innocence must be determined.

no, i'm one who believes that by the time he was captured, we should have been out of there. i support bringing all of the troops home.

as for the political angle of it, yes, i absolutely believe that you are making it political, and would not be doing so under a President Romney. i find it difficult to control my anger about this, so i will be easing back my participation in this thread.

hyperpartisan nonsense is ruining my country. you guys make EVERYTHING political. i can't even express happiness about the release of a POW without drawing the ire of a partisan. it is a ridiculous status quo, and i think we need to rethink our entire political model.

meanwhile, a POW has been released. that is a good thing, as i said in my initial post. if you want to try to paint him as some sort of traitor, that's fine. i don't care, and i won't discuss it with you.
