White House mistakenly identifies CIA chief in Afghanistan

So the question is, what in hell was Obama doing in Afghanistan ?

Was it another photo op ?

Sure hope Air Force One wasn't burning up Obama's green PC fuel at $150. per gallon just to have some selfies taken half way around the world.

I don't have a problem with the CIC visiting the troops on Memorial Day. All CICs have done it.

It's just the boneheaded blundering that this Administration has become known for that is the problem. Like Democrats in tight races all over the country, the Military should start kindly asking the President to stay away.

Comment:

The incompetent Obama White House throws another person under the bus.
This isn't the first time that the Obama White House has outed out someone, they outed out a British intelligence informant for political gain back in 2012. Not to mention >"The identities of at least three CIA station chiefs in Pakistan have been exposed in recent years. In one case, a CIA officer became a target of death threats after his cover was blown, forcing the agency to rush him out of the country."<

White House mistakenly identifies CIA chief in Afghanistan

>" The CIA’s top officer in Kabul was exposed Saturday by the White House when his name was inadvertently included on a list provided to news organizations of senior U.S. officials participating in President Obama’s surprise visit with U.S. troops.

The White House recognized the mistake and quickly issued a revised list that did not include the individual, who had been identified on the initial release as the “Chief of Station” in Kabul, a designation used by the CIA for its highest-ranking spy in a country.

The disclosure marked a rare instance in which a CIA officer working overseas had his cover — the secrecy meant to protect his actual identity — pierced by his own government..."<

Has anyone on this forum ever heard of Valerie Plame?

I guarantee you that G.W. Bush, Scooter Libby and a few other people from the Bush mis-administration are very familiar with that person.

Yep, and I remember the liberal outrage and Plame wasn't even in a war zone. Where is that same liberal outrage now?

Not to mention what Maggie already pointed out...Where's the accountability?
Who will get fired for this? Anyone?[
/QUOTE]

Who would you like to see fired?

Guess what? It ain't going to happen.

Who got fired over the Plame kerfuffle?

bring them all home now.

Valerie Plame was outed intentionally. This guy was outed accidentally. It's a colossal ****-up to be sure but let's not ignore the double standard.

Plame wasn't "outted" because she wasn't a covert agent.

The CIA said she was, end of story. Your GOP talking points to find an excuse for Darth Vader and his minions are pathetic.

The CIA said that her covert status was voided when she married an ambassador.

I would assume for at least two reasons: to meet with our men & women over there & Karzai to try and iron out the future security arrangement.

Supposedly, Karzai refused to meet with President Obama.

Link?

There have been no real talks in a long time.....since the election I believe.....it is a major issue here and leads the news as Canada has a large "Peacekeeping" role there now. And with the heavy casualties, heaviest per capita in the war, we took, there is great sensitivity here. The concern is that the US will do what it always does and leave with the job half done.

But, please indicate anything more than speculation that Obama was even trying for a meeting, it looks like pure self promotion from here.

This was an accident... Valerie Plame was deliberate. Big difference.

It is like when GOP congressmen release top secret information "by mistake"...

If a Secret Service agent accidentally shot the president, the agent shouldn't get fired?

I understand why Libbos are so eager to defend incompetance, but c'mon!

Plame wasn't "outted" because she wasn't a covert agent.
After graduating from college, moving to Washington, D.C., and marrying Sesler, Plame worked at a clothing store while awaiting results of her application to the CIA.[5] She was accepted into the 1985–86 CIA officer training class and began her training for what would become a twenty-year career with the Agency.[14] Although the CIA will not publicly release the specific dates of Plame's employment from 1985 to 2002 due to security concerns,[14][16] Special Counsel Patrick Fitzgerald affirmed that Plame "was a CIA officer from January 1, 2002, forward" and that "her association with the CIA was classified at that time through July 2003.[17] Due to the nature of her clandestine work for the CIA, many details about Plame's professional career are still classified, but it is documented that she worked for the CIA in a clandestine capacity relating to counter-proliferation.[14][18][19][20]
Plame served the CIA at times as a non-official cover (or NOC), operating undercover in (at least) two positions in Athens and Brussels.[21] While using her own name, "Valerie Plame", her assignments required posing in various professional roles in order to gather intelligence more effectively.[22][23][24] Two of her covers include serving as a junior consular officer in the early 1990s in Athens and then later an energy analyst for the private company (founded in 1994) "Brewster Jennings & Associates," which the CIA later acknowledged was a front company for certain investigations.[25]
A former senior diplomat in Athens remembered Plame in her dual role and also recalled that she served as one of the "control officers" coordinating the visit of President George H. W. Bush to Greece and Turkey in July 1991.[26] After the Persian Gulf War in 1991, the CIA sent her first to the London School of Economics and then the College of Europe, in Bruges, for Master's degrees. After earning the second degree, she stayed on in Brussels, where she began her next assignment under cover as an "energy consultant" for Brewster-Jennings.[5] Beginning in 1997, Plame's primary assignment was shifted to the CIA headquarters in Langley, Virginia. The CIA confirmed her status as a NOC or “deep cover officer” and remarked that she was talented and highly intelligent, but decried the fact that her career featured largely US-based Headquarters service, typical of most CIA officers.[27]

Covert agents don't go to work everyday, at CIA headquarters.

If an administration makes a mistake, it would be nice if the next administration didn't make the same mistake and expect a pass.

We tried that in Afghanistan. Recall how that worked out?

a lot of empires have tried to hold Afghanistan. recall how that worked out?

Who would you like to see fired?

Guess what? It ain't going to happen.

Who got fired over the Plame kerfuffle?

Well, I would have to say that Obama doesn't say anything without having it written for him, I mean after all we have seen the disaster when he tries to go off prompter....So, in that case let's start with the dumbass that wrote the name into the speech that Obama gave should really be let go..

When ever you make up your mind on what "uncovers" an agent, let me know....first it is "marrying", next it is "Langley".

The CIA said that her covert status was voided when she married an ambassador.
Legal documents published in the course of the CIA leak grand jury investigation, United States v. Libby, and Congressional investigations, establish her classified employment as a covert officer for the CIA at the time when Novak's column was published in July 2003.[35][36][37]

She was working at headquarters, as an analyst, because her covert status had been revoked; not to mention the Vanity Fair article that caused Bob Novack to ask Richard Armitage, "does Joe Wilson's wife work at CIA?" Armitage said, "yes", because it was no longer a secret that she worked at CIA. SECSTATE isn't privy to the identities of covert agents, the deputy SECSTATE sure as hell doesn't have that information.

Plame, outted Plame.
