'Pentagon military strategy is designed to protect "humans from threats posed by a zombie horde"

The US military has drawn up plans to fight off an invasion of "evil magic zombies" and other forms of the undead.
Prefaced with the disclaimer "this plan was not actually designed as a joke", CONPLAN 8888 lays out a strategy "to undertake military operations to preserve 'non-zombie' humans from threats posed by a zombie horde".
The 31-page document, obtained by Foreign Policy, lays out the eight types of zombie adversaries the US military may face in the event of an outbreak.'

I might think that rather a waste of time and energy. But heck!
We are a democracy and there are lots of guy and girls that think the walking dead are a problem.

And who is going to protect the innocent zombies who only want to live their not-alive lives in peace?

They should have drawn up a war plan on obesity. But I am sure this plan can be used if there is ever an uprising.

Finally we're putting that Defense budget to good use!

What an incredibly misleading story. The Telegrapjh is relying on people not clicking through and reading the original story they based theirs on. Sadly, based on this thread, it looks like most people do not bother to click through and discover the truth. Exclusive: The Pentagon Has a Plan to Stop the Zombie Apocalypse. Seriously.

Military planners assigned to the U.S. Strategic Command in Omaha, Nebraska during 2009 and 2010 looked for a creative way to devise a planning document to protect citizens in the event of an attack of any kind. The officers used zombies as their muse. "Planners ... realized that training examples for plans must accommodate the political fallout that occurs if the general public mistakenly believes that a fictional training scenario is actually a real plan," the authors wrote, adding: "Rather than risk such an outcome by teaching our augmentees using the fictional 'Tunisia' or 'Nigeria' scenarios used at [Joint Combined Warfighting School], we elected to use a completely-impossible scenario that could never be mistaken for a real plan."
Navy Capt. Pamela Kunze, a spokeswoman for Strategic Command, acknowledged the document exists on a "secure Internet site" but took pains to explain that the zombie survival guide is only a creative endeavor for training purposes. "The document is identified as a training tool used in an in-house training exercise where students learn about the basic concepts of military plans and order development through a fictional training scenario," she wrote in an email. "This document is not a U.S. Strategic Command plan."

Or perhaps read a little further and find this:

"Although not strictly a joke, the document is intended as an exercise in drawing up planning documents for training purposes, rather than a real-life strategy.

Its authors noted that the general public sometimes "mistakenly believes that a fictional training scenario is actually a real plan" so they opted for "a completely-impossible scenario that could never be mistaken". "

And yet it is still be taken as a real plan because of how people are trying to present it. In reality, I don't care if they make such a plan. It doesn't actually harm anyone, and very likely costs very little to draw up, particularly since it is for training. As was pointed out, there are no real restrictions to what can be done to zombies, so it seems that this would in fact be a fairly easy way to start people beginning to plan by recognizing what all there is available as far as our capabilities go. Then other plans, that involve people get reduced down from there with restrictions based on reducing deaths, even of enemies.

Here is the plan itself: CONPLAN 8888

I find it amusing they assumed it was so outrageous no one would take it seriously. Turned out people where more gullible than they imagined...

It's the walking brain-dead that are a problem.

"Buried on the military's secret computer network is an unclassified document, obtained by Foreign Policy, called "CONOP 8888." "

This part is so funny because of how ridiculous in reality such a statement is.

First of all, does no one realize just how much crap is on the military computer systems? Just because something isn't presented to you directly, doesn't mean it is "buried".

Second, apparently it wasn't all that "buried" since they got ahold of it. If it were really something that the military did not want to get out, it would not have been nearly as easy to get to. Plus, the fact that it is "Unclassified" shows that it really isn't all that important.

Real strategies aren't released so easily to the public, even if they are against something that is assumed to have very little planning or counterplanning capabilities. Of course, this assumes that the zombies aren't being controlled by a necromancer or demon who is more than capable of thinking up counterplans. Or, they could start out as rational thinking zombies.

The entire government is populated by walking dead. It could be an issue.

First, the Pentagon did a sloppy analysis.

They should have hired ME.

We all know there are TWO types of Zombies.

Fast Zombies ( 28 Days Later and the 2004 Dawn of the Dead Zombies ) and Slow Zombies ( Walking Dead and the Original 1978 Dawn of the Dead Zombies ).

The Virus that causes "Zombie-itus" ( it would most likely NOT be a virus but a Fungus anyway ) works by first Killing its host and then hijacking and then Kickstarting the Central Nervous System.

Then it it would need to continue to fuel the primary muscle groups that allow Zombies to remain ambulatory but at the same time stopping unnecessary nutrition to parts of the body it deems as superfluous.

Like the skin, intestinal track and major organs, which is why Zombies rot away and are seemingly impossible to kill save for the life ending head shot.

The Zombie Virus must destroy the Cerebellum of the Slow Zombies, which is why they shuffle about and are easy to allude leaving the Cerebellum intact on the Fast Zombies which allows them to chase you down.

Also, there would be no hope of survival of a Fast Zombie Apocalypse. No hope at all, kiss your ass goodbye. Hoards of Zombies running full tilt would be unstoppable.

A slow Zombie apocalypse would be easy to stop and probably would be kept isolated.

Its interesting to note that we already have a Virus thats pretty close to a Zombie Virus. Rabies.

In the Movie 28 Days Later, Geneticist create a hybrid virus of the Rabies virus ( the RAGE Virus ) which is what eventually causes the Zombie Apocalypse.

Why Zombies Bite ? Good question, I have no idea since they dont seem to need their intestinal tract or stomach or anything below the earlobes.

I have to assume its simply how the virus replicates beyond its host

I must argue with calling "28 Days Later" a zombie movie, since afterall, they didn't actually die from the virus. In fact, that was part of the plot point. It was part of why it was called 28 Days Later, because they could die of hunger. In fact, a lot of things could kill them. Zombies are dead, those in 28 Days, weren't actually dead.

The Infected - 28 Days Later Wiki

I understand that a lot of people refer to 28 Days as a zombie flick, but it is pseudo-zombie in reality.

Yes, you're right.

Good point

So the only other " Fast Zombie " examples I can think of is the 2004 Dawn of the Dead Movie ( great movie IMO ) and the Video game Left 4 Dead 1 and 2.

They were fast in World War Z. (Those were definitely different zombies than most.) I'm pretty sure they were actually dead, or rather undead though.

Yea they were.

There would be no conceivable way to exscape thousands of Zombies in a full on sprint running towards you.

Its interesting because a Couple of doctors and scientists got together on their off time and really tried to figure out how the Zombie virus would work.

The Undead Zombie virus.

On of the first things they figured was that it would not be a virus but some kind of genetically enhanced Fungus.

Keeping themselves busy with their 660 billion dollar budget I see.

Well, good on them.
