Now, the Russians have hit back by saying they will stop the export of rocket engines to the US if they're to be used to launch American military hardware – something they routinely do when attached to the first-stage of the Atlas rocket.

Several of these vehicles a year will loft spacecraft for the US Air Force or the National Reconnaissance Office (NRO).

Russia is also going to shut down 11 ground stations on its soil that are used to maintain American Global Positioning System (GPS) satellites, although Moscow says this is more directly a response to Washington's refusal to allow stations to be built on US soil for Glonass, the Russians' own sat-nav network.

There's talk, too, of Russia perhaps not agreeing to extend space station operations beyond 2020 – something the rest of the international partners on the project would like to do.

Russia casts doubt on US' future with the ISS over Ukraine sanctions

The head of Russia’s space program says Moscow will reject the United States’ request to use the International Space Station beyond 2020 – the latest twist in a standoff between the two countries over the ongoing crisis in Ukraine.

This sucks. Didn't we pay for a majority of the space station? The fact that we are importing rocket engines from them is interesting too.

I wouldn't worry overly much...NASA and the commercial space industry will likely step up to the plate.

`
With NASA's budget cut to the bare bone by congress, even with the infusion of millions of more dollars, it would take us a decade to restart the space program back up to it's past level. I have no doubt the public sector would step in but not for the public good, but for their own profit.

This in pretty much the way capitalism functions...and creates innovation in the process.

I am fine with profit. It was said when the last of our spacecraft were decommissioned that we would need a solution to get back to space because the Russians may not always be friendly to us. Here we are with the chickens coming home to roost and we don't have a coop.

Poor planning.

Sure the US paid a far larger part of the station than the other participants. But it is no surprise that the Russians are an unreliable partner. This is as true here as where economies have allowed themselves to become energy dependent on them. It is fine to use them as just another supplier. Anything beyond that is to court unhappiness.

I think you meant the private sector would step in.

There was a lot of waste at NASA.

Hello, cold war. Here we go again.

Oh...we were certainly planning:

"The U.S. Space Launch System, or SLS, will provide an entirely new capability for human exploration beyond Earth orbit. It also will back up commercial and international partner transportation services to the International Space Station. Designed to be flexible for crew or cargo missions, the SLS will be safe, affordable, and sustainable, to continue America's journey of discovery from the unique vantage point of space. The SLS will take astronauts farther into space than ever before, while engaging the U.S. aerospace workforce here at home."

Commercial launches will fill in until this is complete.

It's probably a good thing actually. I don't think the money that the US is putting into the ISS is worth it. What we need to be doing is focusing on development of new propulsion systems such as plasma rockets.

`
Yes, I meant the "private sector." There's a lot more waste in the military, I daresay.
