Kidnapped Nigerian Girls

They all report the same news for the most part, and it's all news that they pick and choose. Believe me, there are MANY times when I'm asking myself how can they even consider some things to be news and isn't there something more important to report going on in the world?

The American people at this point by and large don't want to hear about how we are losing Africa to Al-Qaeda and affiliates. One of the golden rules in the News business is that you never tell people what's happening, you tell them what they want to hear. So why upset them and make them change the channel. Give them a nice salacious story about an idiot NBA team owner, instead - that will let them feel morally superior to a rich guy, and they're more likely to stay on it.

Nothing will change if the US plays policeman for this single event even if it is claimed to be a success. The Boko Haram thugs will simply grab more hostages and get their proper ransom from the gov't next time.

Which is why we need to pay them. And then kill them. :)

I know the government is corrupt, and I've been saying that all along, so what's your point with this? This is situation is still different than the situation in Syria. Obviously, this group who committed this kidnapping ARE bad guys, regardless of whether or not the government is also bad.

There is a similarity in many of these terrorist groups in that they tend to be Islamic. The tactics may be different and vary according to the area but that connection remains constant.

Yes, it's a prominent religion in a lot of poor 3rd world countries, where ignorance and lack of education reign supreme, and some of these really bad imams and other so-called religious leaders are fanatics and WANT to keep the people ignorant. This is how they control the people. That is why they are SO upset about these girls going to school and being educated. Then they will have feelings of self worth. God forbid women and girls have any value outside of that which these men assign to them.

Or it could be politically damaging to the party they support.

Like I said earlier in the thread, I really would rather have this not be about politics so as to avoid the partisan bickering. There are plenty of those type of threads. :)

You've summed it up neatly!

It's difficult to avoid and a lot of it actually matters. It also encourages us as individuals to keep up-to-date on current events, history, and all of that.

Okay sure, but I want this particular thread to focus on the problems that are going on over THERE and to learn more about this terror group, as opposed to our own internal political fighting, which we can go to just about any thread and get. Honestly, it gives me a splitting headache.

We all get those headaches!

Over there it seems the Nigerian government had a four hour warning that this kidnapping was going to take place. Nigerian Forces 'Warned About Girls' Kidnap'

All we can do, it seems, is nothing but express concern.

Boko Haram doesn't mean "education is forbidden", it means "western education is forbidden". The girls weren't kidnapped simply because they were in school, they were kidnapped in a Christian school.

Not to say that their faith isn't horribly misogynistic, simply that that shouldn't be overplayed.

I think that's a big reason for it. Once the population is educated, it's not so easy to keep them under your thumb anymore. Ignorance plays a HUGE role in terrorism.

On the other hand their faith does seem to play a highly important role in their actions. In fact the the only role.

Sure, understandably we have to pick our battles, but I would think these poor innocent girls and their grieving families are a good motivating factor.
But what should be a higher priority of the US government, saving American girls or saving Nigerian girls?

 how so? lots of Salafi, Sufi, and Christian expression in Nigeria has strong Animist elements. Boko Haram is also largely a Kanuri rebellion, and can be seen as an Islamist sheen on a tribal conflict.

Big? Sure. Only? Not hardly.

Actually the ranks of the Islamists tend to be rather overrepresented by Doctors and Engineers. It's not education they oppose. It's Western education.

I suppose I'm judging Boko Haram by their name, their statements, and their agenda.

They would never get away with something like that here in America. They would be hunted down like dogs. There is the difference. We are a pretty much educated population who would not settle for less from our government.

 their agenda which is.... Actually replacing the Nigerian state? Maybe, but they don't seem to attempt to do so in the territory they control, rather casting aspersions.

Are there American girls who need saving?

Of course not, things like girls being sold into sex slavery don't happen in America. /sarcasm

....how many girls in the U.S., today, do you think are trafficked for sex-slavery?

Aren't there groups, as well as police, who already try to rescue these girls? I doubt anyone is going to forget about American girls while trying to do something about the plight of young women elsewhere.
