Rams select Michael Sam, NFL's first openly gay player [W:282]

Sam, great person wonderful man.
Tebow, outcast.
Shows exactly where our nation is heading.

What are you talking about? Tebow was given a shot and was not good enough. Sam is being given a shot and if he isn't good enough he'll be gone too. The NFL is about winning and money. Everything else only matters to the media and fans.

Tebow was ostracized for his Christianity from the get go.

Tebow was ostracized for his Christianity from the get go.

It was Christianity that gave him that slow release and inability to read defenses?

Who woulda thunk!

Tebow was ostracized for his Christianity from the get go.

By fans and media maybe. However, half the people loved him because of his faith and pretended he was better than he was. Sam is no different in that respect. A **** load of people want him to fail or succeed based on his sexuality (like tebow and his faith) rather than on his football ability.

Re: http://www.latimes.com/sports/football/nfl/la-sp-michael-sam-nfl-draft-20140511-s

People seriously need to stop with the crap about him being co-conference defensive POY. That means nothing. Nothing.

Hell, I know a two-time national champion and Heisman winner who is begging for a job in football.

Re: http://www.latimes.com/sports/football/nfl/la-sp-michael-sam-nfl-draft-20140511-s

And why isn't Colt Brennan or Dan LeFevour lighting up the NFL? You see how many passing yards they had in college?

Don't say that name.

Redskins fans basically created what was jokingly referred to as the Cult of Colt back when he was on the team. The fervency and desire for the 3rd string guy to become the starter had never been so strong.

But did you see all his offense in college? I thought that automatically translated to success in the NFL.

Is it you Gipper?

So you accuse me of broadbrushing a select group, and then you broadbrushed a select group.

Liberals ARE ignorant.

That's a axiomatic truth that reaffirms itself daily on this very forum.

1.) again where did i say this? you continue to make stuff up
But on a sports board all drafts get talked about especially if that board has sub boards based on each team but again this isnt about 7th round pick its about equal rights and the lessening of hate, discriminating and bigotry.
2.) whats he have to do with equal rights?
3.) again none of this happened so you continued strawman continue to fail and get destroyed.

still waiting for that qoute by the way, why do you keep dodging this request.

What does Michael Sam being picked in the 7th round have to do with " equal rights " ??

Re: http://www.latimes.com/sports/football/nfl/la-sp-michael-sam-nfl-draft-20140511-s

you understand that is the point right...that he broke down a barrier right? triumph over bigotry right? no...........?????????????????????? pity

Ok I'm going to enter this stupid thread right about here. Can someone tell me exactly what "barrier" Sam broke, and what exactly was this triumph over bigotry in the NFL? Don't any of you libs realize that you're being fed this narrative but in reality your mind just assumed that a sport known for masculinity was somehow automatically discriminatory of gay athletes? What a crock of ****, and you should all be ashamed that you fell for it hook line and sinker. Just because "some" players in this league or that league have made openly derogatory remarks concerning gays, it is in no way more or less prevalent than in any other sector of society. Hell even famous libs that make the same comments and get their usual pass make the same comments and at the same frequency, and the particular sport or line of work, or standing in society is not a very good indicator of institutionalize discrimination. There has never been a ban on homosexuality in any sport that I can tell, so would you all please stop with the narrative force fed to you and start thinking for yourselves for once in your life.

Continue on with your false narrative if you wish, but please keep the facts in the forefront when discussing this Michael Sam thread.

Congrats Mr. Sam! another hurdle over come. Nothign much needs said on this.
Like all draftees I hope you have great success on the field. Good luck!

I read about a young black man that had to overcome hurdles in his life to become a Rams draft pick.
Oh, wait. That was Maurice Alexander
Yet, obama praises the gay guy.

Yep, before Obama's position on SSM evolved he was not called a bigot or homophobe. As the ever wise Oprah noted, bigotry dies slowly, over generations, not in some "big bang" event. The US civil war (the war of northern aggression?) ended slavery but not racism, a very nasty form of bigotry; ending racism took generations to even begin in earnest. Folks now cite the 14th amendment as reason to end the ban on SSM but, one must remember, that amendment was adopted in 1868.

First Openly Gay Athlete on a major American team sport. You missed that? it was in all the papers.

Don't any of you libs realize that you're being fed this narrative but in reality your mind just assumed that a sport known for masculinity was somehow automatically discriminatory of gay athletes?

Since no one is saying that where is this coming from?

What a crock of ****, and you should all be ashamed that you fell for it hook line and sinker.

Again fell for what, the thing you said is happening but isn't.

Just because "some" players in this league or that league have made openly derogatory remarks concerning gays, it is in no way more or less prevalent than in any other sector of society.

Yes, in fact the point of this being a big deal is that we a moving beyond the time when gays were forced into closets to be high profile in many areas of society. Not so much any more.

Hell even famous libs that make the same comments and get their usual pass make the same comments and at the same frequency, and the particular sport or line of work, or standing in society is not a very good indicator of institutionalize discrimination.

I know what every one of those words mean just not in the way you use them. Can you parse this out a bit?

There has never been a ban on homosexuality in any sport that I can tell, so would you all please stop with the narrative force fed to you and start thinking for yourselves for once in your life.

Please point to a single person who is saying there was.

Continue on with your false narrative if you wish, but please keep the facts in the forefront when discussing this Michael Sam thread.

I am sorry you are incapable of understanding why this is important. Maybe you should ask a friend who is gay to explain it to you.

Re: http://www.latimes.com/sports/football/nfl/la-sp-michael-sam-nfl-draft-20140511-s

Yep, before Obama's position on SSM evolved he was not called a bigot or homophobe.

Because he didn't talk about it with bigoted or homophobic language. You seem to miss the point.

Obama's position wanted to create a separate category of marriage like status that wasn't marriage because he saw that as a good compromise between the two extremes and said as much.
Most conservatives call gays sinful abominations. See the difference?

As the ever wise Oprah noted, bigotry dies slowly, over generations, not in some "big bang" event.

YEs and bigotry toward gay people is dying and it will be dead in two generations almost certainly.

The US civil war (the war of northern aggression?) ended slavery but not racism, a very nasty form of bigotry, that took generations to even begin in earnest.

Slavery was not bigotry it was the result of bigotry.

Folks now cite the 14th amendment as reason to end the ban on SSM but, one must remember, that amendment was adopted in 1868.

why must we remember that?

First Openly Gay Athlete on a major American team sport. You missed that? it was in all the papers.

Maybe it's just not that important.
Call us when a woman makes the team. Or a genuine handicapped person.
Hell, I'd be impressed if the NFL as a whole were made to follow federal hiring guidelines like any other business.

It was Christianity that gave him that slow release and inability to read defenses?

Who woulda thunk!

Odd release and read defenses just fine. Had a crappy O line and ended up going on the run.

WOW! Obama favored the "separate but equal" stance first, and then evolved further. ;)

YEs and bigotry toward gay people is dying and it will be dead in two generations almost certainly.

But based on the 14th amendment (equal protection clause), which was passed in 1868.

Slavery was not bigotry it was the result of bigotry.

Yep, and I never said otherwise.

why must we remember that?

Because it shows just how long it took folks to figure out that banning SSM violates a constitutional principle established in 1868. It took until 1967 (99 years?) for the SCOTUS to decide that banning interracial marriage was unconstitutional.

So I asked what barrier? Being the first at something? He wasn't the first gay player, but I guess openly gay player? Is this the barrier? But wait, there was no barrier to being openly gay in the NFL was there? Did I miss that? Now onto your nonsense of a post.

First Openly Gay Athlete on a major American team sport. You missed that? it was in all the papers.

Yeah but wait, wasn't there an openly gay NBA player last year? Haven't there been openly gay golfers, both men and women, tennis players, both men and women, race-car drivers, I mean, dude there are openly gay at almost everything these days.

Since no one is saying that where is this coming from?

Dude, from YOU, see above. You said he broke a barrier. Well what friggin barrier was there and how did he break it.

Again fell for what, the thing you said is happening but isn't.

Oh there's a narrative alright, and right on cue libs such as yourself, even when pointed out to you deny it is happening. Ah the beauty of ignorance. We're doomed I tell you. :)

Yes, in fact the point of this being a big deal is that we a moving beyond the time when gays were forced into closets to be high profile in many areas of society. Not so much any more.

Again, doubling down I see. The only person that forced Sam into a closet was Sam. Not the NFL, not the NBA, not the NHL and not MLB.

I know what every one of those words mean just not in the way you use them. Can you parse this out a bit?

Whatever.. The point being is that every aspect of society will always have some degree of bigotry, but the larger point is that it isn't institutional as the gay left would have you all believe.

Please point to a single person who is saying there was.

Gee you're not very... Never mind, dude, YOU, yes YOU said there was a barrier. Well what the hell is the barrier? ;)

I am sorry you are incapable of understanding why this is important. Maybe you should ask a friend who is gay to explain it to you.

It's important because you've been instructed like a good little soldier that it is important. Deep thinking individuals peel away the superficial.

yes you missed it. There are clear barriers to many things for people who are different. Being gay was and may still be a liability in many circles.

Yeah but wait, wasn't there an openly gay NBA player last year?

You are correct, I meant drafted. The NBA player was at the end of his career.

Haven't there been openly gay golfers, both men and women, tennis players, both men and women, race-car drivers, I mean, dude there are openly gay at almost everything these days.

You will note if you must that none of those are team sports. Can you tell me who the openly gay race car drivers are.

Dude, from YOU, see above. You said he broke a barrier. Well what friggin barrier was there and how did he break it.

I already explained that.

Oh there's a narrative alright, and right on cue libs such as yourself, even when pointed out to you deny it is happening. Ah the beauty of ignorance. We're doomed I tell you. :)

seriously?

Again, doubling down I see. The only person that forced Sam into a closet was Sam. Not the NFL, not the NBA, not the NHL and not MLB.

Dumbest statement of the year.

Whatever.. The point being is that every aspect of society will always have some degree of bigotry, but the larger point is that it isn't institutional as the gay left would have you all believe.

I am looking forward to a day when this is not a big deal.

Gee you're not very... Never mind, dude, YOU, yes YOU said there was a barrier. Well what the hell is the barrier? ;)

I am not sure if you are being willfully ignorant or just trolling. Michael Sam was the 1st openly gay person recruited onto a MAJOR TEAM SPORT IN THE UNITED STATES.

It's important because you've been instructed like a good little soldier that it is important. Deep thinking individuals peel away the superficial.

more insults....well let me just say that while you are struggling to hold onto your bigotry and do not want the world to be open to gay people, your time is over. I pity you.
