Rams select Michael Sam, NFL's first openly gay player [W:282]

Re: http://www.latimes.com/sports/football/nfl/la-sp-michael-sam-nfl-draft-20140511-s

Why else would he come out of the closet? Because he figgered he wouldn't get picked, otherwise.

I've heard it was because enough people knew already there was no chance of him keeping it a secret. Better that way than being outed by someone else.

Re: http://www.latimes.com/sports/football/nfl/la-sp-michael-sam-nfl-draft-20140511-s

the anti-gay crowd hate this because he was drafted exactly where he was projected early in the process. He is an tween guy and some can be learned. He may make the team and he will likely be a mediocre player. He got no special treatment for being gay and likely only got passed over by a team or two. He has skills just not the body for the NFL as a starter. The real question would be if he had 20 lbs more muscle and 2 inches and didn't get drafted until now. But good luck to him. He will go to mini camp.

Now it is a story in part because he is gay and open about it. (there have been plenty of gay NFL players) But like when any barrier is broken it is news.

That seems like pure speculation to me.

Jeez, I don't know. Maybe because he was tired of living a lie. Maybe because he knew it would come out eventually - hell all of his Missouri teammates knew. But trust you to come up with the most dishonest and disrespectful explanation possible. Congratulations

Particularly nasty speculation, fueled by ... well, I won't say it. But we can all guess the reasons for that post.

Not to mention the PR value.

It worked for Jason Collins.

What worked? Collins was a professional basketball player before he came out as gay. What are you getting at?

Because he knew the story was going to come out anyway and he wanted to control the story, instead of being controlled by it.

He wanted to create job security...LOL!!! Just like Jason Collins. Collins was out of the NBA, before he came out of the closet.

A professional basketball player that no one had ever heard of and who was fixing to find himself in the real world, looking for gainful employment.

the fact that you have no idea what you are talking about suggests that you have an ideological reason to say this.

I can't believe being gay was an issue in the NFL?

which is a smart choice ...and more believable than the " tired of living a lie" argument.

He became a free agent after he came out as being gay. He was out of the NBA for like a few months.

So, no.

I'm expressing an opinion, just like anyone else.

And, now he's back, in the NBA.

The Nets picked him up for the 2014 season.

one based clearly on a false belief. In both cases you mention things happened EXACTLY as everyone in the business suggested it would. You attributing anything to either being gay is simply ridiculous.

It's "false"...in your opinion.

before the combine, he was projected as a 4th round pick... most wrote him off entirely after the combine, he was just that bad.

7th round was a very generous pick

it's really no different than you opining he received no special treatment for being gay...so i wouldn't take this track too far.

That's a rather disgusting thing to say - to suggest that the only reason one is open about their sexuality is to find employment opportunities.

Is it? Most experts were saying before he came out that the chances he would get drafted were very slim. It's entirely likely he was drafted just so the Rams could say they were first in accepting gays.

The tired of living a lie is also, most likely, apart of it as well. It very much sucks and is quite suffocating living a lie.

Yeah, because being the first gay NFL prospect to come out really helped his draft prospects.

If anything, it hurt his prospects.
