Brunei becomes the first East Asian nation to take the leap.
Others have elements of Sharia but Brunei is going '7th Century'.
No adultery, No homosexulaity (another stoning to death offense), No alcohol, etc, etc.
Especially tough on the 30% of the population that isn't Muslim.
Even the multicultis at 'Amnesty' et al are upset.

Brunei has become the first East Asian country to adopt sharia law, despite widespread condemnation from international human rights groups.

The Islamic criminal law is set to include punishments such as flogging, dismemberment and death by stoning for crimes such as rape, adultery and sodomy. The religious laws will operate alongside the existing civil penal code.

During a ceremony Wednesday morning, the Sultan of Brunei, Hassanal Bolkiah, announced the commencement of the first phase of the sharia-based penal code, according to the government's official website. The oil-rich kingdom, located on the island of Borneo, has a population of just 412,000 people. The country already follows a more conservative Islamic rule than neighboring Muslim-dominated countries like Indonesia and Malaysia, and has implemented strict religiously-motivated laws, such as the banning of the sale of alcohol.

Stringent laws

In response to the new set of laws, human rights group Amnesty International said that it will "take the country back to the dark ages."
"It (the law) makes a mockery of the country's international human rights commitments and must be revoked immediately," Amnesty's regional deputy director Rupert Abbott said in a statement released after the announcement.

Most parts of the new Islamic code will apply to both Muslims and non-Muslims, affecting people from the Christian and Buddhist communities. Around 70% of people in Brunei are Malay Muslims, while the remainder of the population are of Chinese or other ethnic descent.

The Sultan, who is also the Prime Minister, first announced the law in October 2013. As per its provisions, sexual offenses such as rape, adultery and sodomy will be considered punishable acts for Muslims. Consensual sex between homosexuals will also be criminalized, with death by stoning the prescribed punishment.

First time I have ever heard of Brunei.

Well to be fair it is a tiny monarchy in South-East Asia, who's economy relies 99.95% on oil exports.

Brunei is like the Kuwait of Asia: tiny country and pretty much the Sultan's personal property. It doesnt mess with anybody so if people dont like their laws they can go live somewhere else.

Ah well... to be fair, it's a crappy little country so you even with sharia, it's not like you can ruin it further.

If that's what the people wanted, who am I to complain?

What is the big deal here. Saudi Arabia an US ally with a US military base, US defends the country and its laws.

If the people, through their leader, Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu'izzaddin Waddaulah ibni Al-Marhum Sultan Haji Omar Ali Saifuddien Sa'adul Khairi Waddien, decide that Sharia law is under what they will live under, then if the people don't like it, they can leave or remove the Sultan the easy way or the hard way.

...

Brunei is an absolute monarchy. The sultan doesn't represent the people. They didn't vote for him. So the phrase "the people, through their leader" is null and void because they didn't get to pick their leader. It was handed down to them.

This is the sultan being a dicktaker. I mean dictator.

The sultan loves his people and has represented them proudly since 1967. He can do no wrong because he is infallible. He is a man of many hats and titles: academic, political, religious and military.

Clearly we should bomb them.
