Clippers Owner Donald Sterling Fined $2.5M and Banned for Life by NBA[W:545]

Re: Clippers Owner Donald Sterling Fined $2.5M and Banned for Life by NBA

Mark Cuban said it was a slippery slope too. I think the problem was that the players were talking about not playing and companies were pulling out of sponsoring and ads. The NBA wanted to protect it's own brand, and they didn't want to face an overall **** storm. It was about money. The Clipper fans and players shouldn't have to pay a financial price. I think it's fair they punished the owner and put the blame squarely on him. The NBA and Clippers have no reason to fear boycotting now.

Fairly predictable.

Remind me to never tell off a girlfriend who is literally half my age over a smart phone with a recorder. Wow.

Remember when Isaiah Thomas said if Larry Bird was black, he'd be just another good player? Would that get him banned now, too? Does this apply to players for anything they say, too?

Slippery slope, but here we are.

Re: Clippers Owner Donald Sterling Fined $2.5M and Banned for Life by NBA

Oh please. He has attorneys to handle this ****. No way he settles for 2.5 million unless he was exposed. Like I said, you're on an island.
LOL...

I live in the real world, and I would pay $1,000 in a settlement, in a heartbeat, if it meant not going to court for two days. The nature of that lawsuit would have likely been several weeks.

Yep. This type of logic is over your head.

Re: Clippers Owner Donald Sterling Fined $2.5M and Banned for Life by NBA

He owns them but it seems his ownership is subject to the provisions of the NBA constitution.

It's harsh but from the press conference I just saw it's naturally all about money. Seems lots of sponsors pulled their support because of Sterling's statements. They probably needed to have someone tossed under the bus.

Yeah, well, you'd think the guy would have learned to respect black people since they played on his team, made him so much money, and to my knowledge, they didn't do anything to him personally. The guy was not only a bigot, he was a flaming idiot. His own team and the rest of the NBA had every right to pissed off at the guy. I wouldn't want to play on a team for a guy that thought I scum because of the color of my skin.

She is just not very good looking either.

Most gold diggers look like they get plastic surgery. I am not sure why gold diggers can't be happy without it...

All I can say is I'm glad I'm not part of your click.

I'm not alone on this. I am just one who doesn't let the liberal attack dogs/PC police silence.

What's a click?
Wow...

You must be a teenager...

It was a common term not too many years ago.

Ooops...

I spelled it wrong. It is spelled clique.

No, but I was one a long time ago. And when I was, I didn't cut English. Somewhere along the way I learned to spell a number of words as well.

It was a common term not too many years ago.

LOL. Not where I come from. And not according to Webster. Here's one for you...malapropism

If the ban/fine is related to racial bigotry, then Spike Lee should be stopped at the door of Madison Square Gardens and every other NBA facility any time he tries to enter to watch a game.

Spike Lee hasn't signed an agreement with the NBA. The NBA can't punish him

Re: Clippers Owner Donald Sterling Fined $2.5M and Banned for Life by NBA

People try to sue rich people all the time for the settlement.... When a rich person settles, it isn't necessarily an admission of guilt. It's just cheaper and less time consuming than court.

Yeah, but when a corporation does it, it nearly always means they don't want their dirty laundry aired out in the open.

Not necessarily true. Regardless, we just don't really know, do we?

Re: NBA Bans Donald Sterling For Life

From riches to rags in four days. wow.

I'm pretty sure that, regardless of what the NBA can do, he won't be in rags any time soon.

True, but if he sells, he's going to take a beating

He's not going to get top dollar because right now it's a damaged brand. In addition, the buyers know he's in a tough spot so the can low ball him. Finally, he's going to have to pay taxes on the capital gain. All in all, it's going to cost him tens of millions and maybe even more than 100 million

What makes you think he doesn't respect black people?

Of course we can't know for sure since the plaintiffs are typically restricted from talking about it because they've signed a gag order/non-disclosure agreement. At any rate, it's not beyond the realm of plausibility that corporations do some awfully shady things and get away with it by settling out of court, the much cheaper alternative to public disclosure and scrutiny.

Because the talking heads tell their audience that.

Re: Clippers Owner Donald Sterling Fined $2.5M and Banned for Life by NBA

Actually when it comes to the best interests of the League and fixing anything that is deemed detrimental to the League the Commissioner is given broad powers. Sorry but that is in the NBA Constitution and something all the owners are held to. Silver felt Sterling's actions caused a very detrimental impact on the League and found it to be in the best interest of the League to suspend Sterling. Now you may not like it, but that is something the Commissioner has the power to do under the NBA Constitution.

And I'm sure in a couple of years, filled with depositions of others associated with the NBA saying far more vile and disgusting things, we'll see if a court thinks that Silver exercised his rights reasonably or abused his power.

We can argue to the possibility/plausibility. I see you at least agree it isn't a certainty.

I hope Sterling sues the living **** out of the whole mess of'em.

He paid $12 million for the team that he can now sell for close to $800 million.

I think he's going to be alright.

Here's an interview with Marques Johnson on KJR- Seattle. This was yesterday. Get past the intro, he talks about playing for Sterling and the manner he was treated.

Actually, in a case such as the one you note, the $2.5 million was probably the lesser of two evils. Had he gone to trial and won, his own legal bills would likely exceed that figure - people like him don't hire cheap representatives - and even if a court awarded him costs, he'd never have a hope of collecting, considering the plaintiffs. Many rich people settle nuisance cases which is why American courts are inundated with nuisance lawsuits and the American bar is filled with ambulance chasers.
