Clippers Owner Donald Sterling Fined $2.5M and Banned for Life by NBA[W:545]

Re: Clippers Owner Donald Sterling Fined $2.5M and Banned for Life by NBA

If Silver hadn't gone down heavy, he was facing a full-on mutiny.

Perhaps. But that still isn't the point I was making. The article states that Sterling's comments damaged the relationship of players to the NBA. By getting in front of this I think Silver actually improved their relationship. The article failed to point that out.

Here are some examples...

"I hope that every bigot in this country sees what happened to Mr. Sterling and recognizes that if he can fall, so can you," said Sacramento Mayor and former NBA player Kevin Johnson, who also works with the NBA Players Association."Today, [Adam Silver] is not only the owners' commissioner," Johnson said. "He's the players' commissioner. And we are proud to call him our commissioner."

"Commissioner Silver showed great leadership in banning LA Clippers owner Donald Sterling for life," tweeted Magic Johnson, who was mentioned in Sterling's recorded remarks. He added, "The people who I'm happiest for are Coach Doc Rivers, the Clippers players and fans."

"We all started clapping because he handled it the right way," said former LA Lakers great Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, who watched Silver's announcement today with a group that included Kevin Johnson.

"Commissioner Silver thank you for protecting our beautiful and powerful league!! Great leader!" reads a tweet from the Miami Heat's LeBron James.

Current LA Laker Steve Nash said, "if racism is a learned behavior, how long will it go on for? How long will people be taught to be bigoted, to discriminate and to instill hatred in our communities?"

Reactions To NBA's Ban Of Clippers Owner Donald Sterling : The Two-Way : NPR

These are just a few. There are tons out there.

Re: Clippers Owner Donald Sterling Fined $2.5M and Banned for Life by NBA

I don't disagree - but if the NBA wants to play the purity card, banning for life all who have racist thoughts, they better get the lawyers working overtime and Silver better polish up his news conference wardrobe because he should be out in front banning a whole slew of racists associated with his league.

My first reaction was that this will be an epic legal battle. And yes it is a very slippery slope.

Re: Clippers Owner Donald Sterling Fined $2.5M and Banned for Life by NBA

And let's not just focus on racism. Let's look at other protected classes of people. Why not look at the family that owns the Orlando Magic and has made many derogatory comments about gay people and have actively, financially, supported anti-gay causes. I'm waiting now for Mr. Silver to don his big white hat and go after all the bigots of any flavour in the newly purified NBA.

Re: Clippers Owner Donald Sterling Fined $2.5M and Banned for Life by NBA

There will be none. Too many out there that think like Stuart Scott (SportsCenter anchor), who basically says that minorities by definition can NOT be racist to whites. Only the white man can be racist towards minorities.

edit - "@StuartScott: True Racism is group w majority/economic/political power discriminating against others..
Blacks/Hispanics can be ANGRY/RUDE but not "Racist"

SMH.

And also this gem:

"Cases of a minority not hiring a white person, not engaging with a white person, etc. are by definition not "racis(t/m)". A white dude shouting the "N-word" is racist because it plays in to a greater narrative of suppression of a disadvantaged group."

So don't bother yourself worrying about Barkley or Snoop or LJ or any other black guy, he can discriminate all he wants and even refuse to hire you based on the lack of color in your skin. But don't you dare go aimlessly shouting "the N-word", because THAT my friend is suppressing the disadvantaged.

:doh

That's insane.

Re: Clippers Owner Donald Sterling Fined $2.5M and Banned for Life by NBA

This is insane.

Looks like I will now boycott the NBA for revoking a person's first amendment rights in what is assumed to be a private conversation.

I'm sorry, but anyone who thinks this guy should be punished over this is an absolute fool.

Yes, I am asking for moderator punishment, but seriously... This has to be said...

This was racial. Not racist. Anyone over reacting to this should be ignored as a fool.

Re: Clippers Owner Donald Sterling Fined $2.5M and Banned for Life by NBA

Are they owners in the NBA if not then who do you think should fine them? You are free to pull your advertising from any of those people, boycott any products they promote and condemn them publicly.

Oh can you tell me what racially disparaging thing Jesse said, I don't know that I have paid much attention to him in 15 years.

Re Jackson: during an interview leading up to the 2008 Presidential Election, Jackson called Obama the n-word off camera, which he later apologized for.

You're on an island. Yes his privacy was invaded. The NBA should have drop kicked his ass years ago.

Maybe so, but not over this.

I don't know what they should have dropped him over in the past though. Are you referring to the time he settled in court because it was cheaper than a pesky lawsuit, and the time the courts said a former manager didn't have a case?

If that all you have, you ain't got diddly...

Re: Clippers Owner Donald Sterling Fined $2.5M and Banned for Life by NBA

So what? Did the NBA say they banned and fined Sterling because he was costing them money? No, the banned and fined him because he said some racist things in the privacy of his home and when people heard them, through the media, some got on their high horse of outrage and "brought whitey down".

If the ban/fine is related to racial bigotry, then Spike Lee should be stopped at the door of Madison Square Gardens and every other NBA facility any time he tries to enter to watch a game.

As for the rest, I'm sure the NBA has fines and penalties for players who refuse to report and if sponsors wish to remove themselves from association, others will readily take their place.

This is the equivalent of a town square lynching or a Salem witch burning.

Actually when it comes to the best interests of the League and fixing anything that is deemed detrimental to the League the Commissioner is given broad powers. Sorry but that is in the NBA Constitution and something all the owners are held to. Silver felt Sterling's actions caused a very detrimental impact on the League and found it to be in the best interest of the League to suspend Sterling. Now you may not like it, but that is something the Commissioner has the power to do under the NBA Constitution.

Everybody better start being careful what they say in private.

HIs first amendment is still intact....the government is not involved.

Why?

Yes, I am asking for moderator punishment, but seriously... This has to be said...

i don't understand....why do you think you, whose opinion is in the minority, are right and everyone wrong.

This was racial. Not racist. Anyone over reacting to this should be ignored as a fool.

Again, everyone else almost on the planet thinks it is racist. Again special knowledge have you?

Yes if you are one of the 29 owners of an NBA franchise realize your private conversations with your mistress might be leaked if she is angry with you and you could lose your team. Everyone else...not sure how the actions of the NBA apply.

Re: Clippers Owner Donald Sterling Fined $2.5M and Banned for Life by NBA

Oh give me a break.

You're going to believe the Huff~n~Puff post?

From what links I looked at, it's the same old BS that never gained real traction of fact.

People try to sue rich people all the time for the settlement.... When a rich person settles, it isn't necessarily an admission of guilt. It's just cheaper and less time consuming than court.

Re Jackson: during an interview leading up to the 2008 Presidential Election, Jackson called Obama the n-word off camera, which he later apologized for.

Well that was a convoluted story but I am sure he said the N-word and guess what? He has become most irrelevant in the last 6 years. Funny it happened on Fox.

Bull****... the guy got caught and bought his way out. He also threw tons of money at the NAACP. The lifetime achievement award was bought and paid for...

Look the lawsuits over Sterling's racist practices in real estate are a matter of public record. He has paid millions to settle lawsuits to this end in the past. Hardly partisan hackery. It public and verifiable.

You are so easily hood-winked by the media and race baiters...

I would like to see tangible evidence, not innuendo.

Yes a lawsuit is rather intangible. :lamo

One settled and one that never made it to court because the courts voted 12-0 that it wasn't a case, right?

What happened to him isn't right because it was illegal surveillance, but because he is a public figure with a franchise he does have to be careful. I'm not a big fan of the PC movement and the "destroy the view that offends us" mentality but right now it is prevalent. The guy is a jerk, he had a right to say it, and the league has a right to protect itself.

Re: Clippers Owner Donald Sterling Fined $2.5M and Banned for Life by NBA

It absolutely is. However, the NBA is not a court of law.

This ban, as much as I disagree with it (I think a firm suspension was in order, but not a lifetime ban), was a lifetime achievement award. Sterling has had this coming for a long time.

Was the evidence illegally obtained? More than likely, yes. Does that matter when it's a private entity exacting punishment on someone who voluntarily accepted its rules? I don't think it does.

If person X sends illegally obtained information to a someone else's boss in order to damage their reputation, it ABSOLUTELY makes a difference. There was no crime committed here. There was no violation of anyone's rights. This was an opinion given in private. That it merits a 2.5 million dollar sanction and lifetime ban is obscene.

Re: Clippers Owner Donald Sterling Fined $2.5M and Banned for Life by NBA

2.5 million dollars...yeah he was innocent all right

I see what I said completely went over your heard. I guess I need to spell it out.

Do the math. How much do you think this guys time is worth? How many days or weeks would he have been tied up in court?

Let me ask you this to put things in perspective. If you had the choice of being tied up in court for 1 to 4 weeks, or paying 0.25% or less of your net worth, which would you do?

If your net worth is $400,000, then would you pay $1,000 to keep from having to waste time in court?

Oh please. He has attorneys to handle this ****. No way he settles for 2.5 million unless he was exposed. Like I said, you're on an island.
