Clippers Owner Donald Sterling Fined $2.5M and Banned for Life by NBA[W:545]

Re: Clippers Owner Donald Sterling Fined $2.5M and Banned for Life by NBA

Last NBA game I went to was in the Fleet Center in Boston when the Celtics played the Knicks. I would say probably 75% of the stands were white people, not black males.
Right, but you have to factor in viewership and merchandise as well which is where the league makes the largest chunk of their money. Those are the demographics I meant(sorry, that is my fault for not giving that info out). If the league didn't do something and a boycott were to be called, it would be an economic catastrophe.

Re: Clippers Owner Donald Sterling Fined $2.5M and Banned for Life by NBA

Sharpton is a dick. A hack. No more, no less.

This is a blatant political play by the NBA. Sterling is a slimy piece of pig **** who should have never have been approved to begin with. The NBA laid down with a dog. . But even he deserves basic privacy.

The NBA and his entire team apparently (from all reports) knew for years what kind of slob Sterling was. But his money bought their silence, apparently. Same with the NAACP.

I'm not a big fan of hysterics. They all knew about this. It wasn't until TMZ blew the lid off that all of a sudden they're all outraged.

Re: Clippers Owner Donald Sterling Fined $2.5M and Banned for Life by NBA

It requires the taped party to consent.

I think that is one of the dumbest laws ever. Who would consent to being taped when you could slip up and say something that could land you in deep trouble? I'm not consenting to being taped ever.

Re: Clippers Owner Donald Sterling Fined $2.5M and Banned for Life by NBA

Yet no one wants to bring up that the NAACP was all ready to give this man the "man of the year" award all because he donated generously, and included Clippers tickets to the LA front office of the NAACP....What a crock....

The man is probably getting the short end of the stick here.

Re: Clippers Owner Donald Sterling Fined $2.5M and Banned for Life by NBA

Oh dear! I'm listening to Dire Straights for background atmosphere. Brothers in Arms specifically. In Money for Nothing, Mark Knopfler uses the word "faggot" at least half a dozen times. So...umm...what should we do? Hold a self-righteousness riot? Let our local central committee organize CD bonfires? I mean, come on people, we have to make those bastards pay.

This all made for good theater for some, and a chance for others to display their outrage and pat themselves on the back.

Re: Clippers Owner Donald Sterling Fined $2.5M and Banned for Life by NBA

I thought he owned them, rocket. I'm confused as well, and hope someone can answer.

It's very harsh.

He still owns the clippers. the NBA cannot force him to sell the franchise. They can ban him from games and or player involvement, but he still owns the clippers.
they are trying to force him to sell but i don't see how they can do it legally.

Public Relations, it's all good until it's published.

Re: Clippers Owner Donald Sterling Fined $2.5M and Banned for Life by NBA

Their assets are independent. When you force a sale, you destroy value. That's why you get things for pennies on the dollar when they're attached to divorce, bankruptcy, destitution, etc.

their assets maybe independent, but they are intrinsically linked. The health of one team benefits the league...just as one team doing poorly does. An NBA franchise is a sought after commodity amoung the super ego-rich. It does not lose value.

the NBA would have no problem finding buyers at their franchise price. It's a club many would die for to get into.

If he sells, we will see if it goes for market or way below.

It's based upon surveillance law, same reason video voyeurism is a felony in many states. Taping a conversation is considered surveillance so without the appropriate license or a public domain defense expectation of privacy to the second party is considered present.

I brought them up.:2wave:

How much do you think he's going to donate to them going forward? They gave him a lifetime achievement award in 2009 and were about to give him a second, even though all we keep hearing is how "everyone" knew what a racist he was. It wasn't until it was politically expedient that they, like the NBA, his team, his fellow owners and all of his players, tossed him aside with their faux outrage.

It would all be funny, except for the fact that I still can't get past the idea that nobody seems to care about privacy anymore.

How do you know that?

They're a TV sport. Ratings = money.

If you can show me were merchandise sells and butts in the seats is out weighed by tv revenue...I'll accept your contention.

You don't think the NBA makes the bulk of its money from TV revenues? Really??? Every other major sport does, but not the NBA? Really???

Re: Clippers Owner Donald Sterling Fined $2.5M and Banned for Life by NBA

It requires the taped party to consent.

Than all Sterling needs to do is take some of that money of his and influence a prosecution...

Re: Clippers Owner Donald Sterling Fined $2.5M and Banned for Life by NBA

Like the commissioner said, once the private tape was made public it was no longer relevant, they became separate issues. I do agree that is messed up what she did, maybe there should be penalties?

I think he would win a suit against her for any and all financial consequences to this.

If it had not been for her illegal act, this would not have happened.

Re: Clippers Owner Donald Sterling Fined $2.5M and Banned for Life by NBA

That right there is the crux of the problem. I'm surprised at how many people who collectively yell about their right to privacy don't seem to have an issue with this guy's right to privacy.

So now we know...anything you say in private can & will be used against you in the court of public opinion. It doesn't bother others, apparently. It sure bothers me.

Now thinking about that, with the NSA listening to everything, they can use any private conversation to break somebody like this.

It seems the leaker is getting a pass, at least so far, so why would the NSA not do this?

Re: Clippers Owner Donald Sterling Fined $2.5M and Banned for Life by NBA

This was an overreaction in your opinion, many other people were deeply hurt by this. Moving the goal posts and saying blacks must be "oppressed" for it to be racism is irrelevant. What you say matters in the U.S., especially if you are a high profile person that owns a basketball team largely consisting of blacks and you say something racist about blacks.

Please explain how anybody could be deeply hurt by what this man said.

Please give an example of how somebody could be deeply hurt.

We can keep going back and forth. Im not going to look up the numbers. You challenged my contention. It is up to you to show Im wrong.

Re: Clippers Owner Donald Sterling Fined $2.5M and Banned for Life by NBA

Personally, the most the NBA should have done was condemn the words. I'm sure all the NBA owners are proponents of free market economics (Yes, I AM laughing my ass off saying that) so they would be more than happy to let the market work itself out. New draftees would refuse to sign. No free agents would go there and at the end of all of their contracts those players current would move on. Fans would stop going(This one questionable as most ticket holders are white) but with a losing team they would stop attending. The revenue loss would be such that the guy would be forced to sell.

It isn't like this guy got on the ESPY's and said what he did, he said it in private, are we not allowed our private thoughts and opinions anymore?

The rub is that we don't know why he said it or what he meant by what he said.

Re: Clippers Owner Donald Sterling Fined $2.5M and Banned for Life by NBA

Los Angeles Clippers owner Donald Sterling will be banned for life and fined $2.5 million for racist comments, NBA commissioner Adam Silver announced Tuesday.

The move comes after days of outrage at ugly words attributed to Sterling from a taped conversation with an ex-girlfriend.

The comments, where the owner seemed to say he didn't want his much-younger girlfriend hanging out with Black people on Instagram or bringing them to games, were first by TMZ and then in another recording posted on the website Deadspin.

The NBA had said it was unable to authenticate the tapes, but Sterling's wife told KABC-TV in Los Angeles that it was her husband on the recordings.

At a press conference on Tuesday afternoon, Commissioner Silver said an investigation had confirmed that the voice on the tapes and the "hateful opinions voiced" were those of Sterling.

I don't see how any of it is legal, regardless of how offensive his comments are. He didn't do anything illegal....just stupid. Can't say he doesn't deserve it though.

Judging from the types of things you say here that would be wise.

Yeah, I don't think he will give them one thin dime anymore....heh, heh....

Personally I think that the GF had this planned to either blackmail him, or force the sale....Maybe to Magic...

Right. I hope NBA fans make their feelings known by voting with their wallets. A $2.5 million fine? There are settlements made every day in American courtrooms that don't put that kind of value on a human life. The NBA will never see a dime of that if Sterling has a lawyer who's worth a damn. In fact, I'd counter sue. This entire episode is based on a recording of a man in the privacy of his own home that somehow "went public". There's a huge privacy issue in all this...and it smells of a premeditated set-up.

Re: Clippers Owner Donald Sterling Fined $2.5M and Banned for Life by NBA

I come up with the same analysis. He is the face of the team, and if his personal beliefs are that important to everyone, the team will suffer. I don't see the need for this kneejerk reaction, its mainly because we are and probably always will be in racially tense times. Maybe because the POTUS talked to the commisioner. Who knows, its not the free market speaking though.

It is also not like who he is was not common knowledge much before this.

I have to wonder why the heavy fine and suspension this time as opposed to before.
