6800 bucks 84 mpg american made

...and that's a bigger problem to solve than building high MPG cars. I'm a big fan of the idea of providing a gas tax break for carpoolers. Not entirely sure how to administer it, but doing so would take cars off the road and that's the best way to reduce fuel consumption, extend road life, make our roads safer and reduce enforcement costs. The Elios might make a decent back-up car for running to the store for milk and the like, but we should be focusing on finding ways to get cars off the road entirely instead of just finding ways to make people feel better about putting more cars on the road.

Cars are freedom and in some places like California life. A runabout like this is a solution for people. Carpooling only really works in limited circumstance and people do that when its convenient. We have van pools for the oilfield and ag workers out here. But not everyone is the same and hence the problem.

It is automatic - the same amount of fuel then transports two (or more) folks. By splitting the fuel costs (or rotating who drives), not only do you save the fuel tax but the cost of the fuel as well. ;)

See post 52.

Heh, yep. But more so I would like a car that does everything, not one that just does one thing.

Doesn't really exist.

The only way to take cars off the road is to remove the need for people to go from A - B. If its not cars, it bikes, buses, trains, motorcycles, on foot, horse carts, etc. Traffic of another type.

I dunno. I had an old Saturn that eventually turned into a blender. It blended the oil and coolant extremely well. Then it became a lawn ornament for a few days. Who knows what it is now. Could be a Lexus or a microwave.

But I already have an F-150 for that stuff, and intend to keep it.
The Elio would just be to commute, out of the waether.
It would make a great spare car and fit in your truck bed!

If you look at the freeway most cars only have one person in them. I am looking at one myself as depending on the available baggage space might make a really good runabout and errand vehicle.
Joking aside, I could actually consider buying one for my commute to work and back.

$6,800? Why not?

I like it. I'd definitely consider it. Right now I own a motorcycle primarily for commuting because my crappy Taurus gets horrible gas mileage, and because getting a 40 MPG motorcycle is a lot cheaper than getting a 40 MPG car.

However, I'd absolutely consider getting rid of my car and my bike (we'd still have my wife's car) for something like this. I tend to use my car most of the time because it's:

1) Raining
2) Too cold
3) Too hot
4) Need to pick up a couple of bags of groceries

This would cover most of those times. The few times I'd need something bigger I'd likely be able to use my wife's car.

Cool, they've tailored them a bit from the ones they've had for years now. Looks like a different company this time too. I think they end up being motorcycle class in most states.

I think you're right in terms of them being classified as a motorcycle. There's been a few companies I think trying out similar designs, but you may be right that it's the same company with a changing name.

How far would it go if you got rear-ended by a truck?

At least a bit farther then you would likely in a motorcycle, where you'd probably just go straight into the gorund.

That rating will mean squat if one tangles with a Ford F-150.

True. But depending on what you're looking at it for that may not be a big deal. If you want it to replace your SUV that you bought because you have kids and want to keep them safe in a big vehicle, than that's a problem. If you want it to replace a motorcycle for your daily commute, then you're probably actually getting a bit of extra protection. A motorcycle tangling with an F-150 isn't doing well either, but at least in this instance you wouldn't have the added bonus of physically hitting and sliding along the ground.

It would be well over $7000 with tax, title and out the door. Dang you couldn't even fit another person in that thing. At least on a Harley two can ride.

Where, in that little thing, are you going to put a kid with a broken leg?

I don't know. Strap him to the top of the roof?

Look, shut up, people are going to need it for an emergency, like a beer run, whatever.

I think I will probably head up to the local dealer to check it out.

It rains half the year or more in Oregon...

I'm making fun of it, but if I were a commuter I'd definitely consider it.

Most of the time isn't it more like a misty type of rain? That wouldn't be a big deal. The only person I know who had a problem with getting a little wet was the wicked witch in the Wizard of Oz. :). But even if you could only ride it half the year, still a great savings. What bugs me about that little tin can of a car is being so confined.....a death trap.

Maybe I'm reading it wrong, but I thought there was a second seat behind the drivers seat where a passenger could ride. They talk about it when talking about the trunk space, and how you can put the "back seat" down to get more room for something like a golf bag.

The once has a man named Julio
who had himself an Elio
there was enough room for his ass
and a gallon of gas
but he balls hung out and he lost em...

Keep your day job.

You're Right! They even squeezed a second seat into that thing.
