Putin tells Edward Snowden: Russia doesn't carry out mass surveillance [W:31]

Re: Edward Snowden - Useful Idiot?u

Putin is hardly someone to believe, he's about as slimey and dishonest as Harry Reid, but I'd say it's very likely that Russia doesn't have anything anywhere near what the US has under the NSA. Have you seen that multi-billion dollar facility they have? Russia still operates under cold-war tactics - easier and less costly just to liquidate anyone you don't like.

Snowden probably knew the last time Putin took a ****, so Putin better watch his ass. He might have lots of dirt on Russia hidden somewhere too.

Re: Edward Snowden - Useful Idiot?u

So do I. But I am not convinced any of the programs are unconstitutional. Obviously others disagree, and that's fine. But given the current laws, it has not been found that the NSA has been intentionally violating them, and unintentional violations have been reported. It's not like pre-Church Commission activities like Project Shamrock which was clearly illegal.

Unintentional violations? So I guess the NSA workers just 'accidentally' spied on their exes?

You can be sure Grenwald has lots of incriminating information on Russians and Americans set to use if Snowden gets in any trouble.

Re: Edward Snowden - Useful Idiot?u

that Russia is not carrying out mass surveillance programmes of the kind Snowden exposed in the US.

Sure they're not, only in certain places.

The new US Embassy in Moscow was half done. Then officials
realized the Soviets had built hundreds of listening devices
right into the structure.

Russians would never spy on their own citizens.

I thought it was clear that I meant intentional violations by the agency. That individuals broke the law and were punished for it is not the agency itself. In fact it shows adherence to the law. Or are you claiming they were authorized or encouraged to break the law?

It may not have been a direct order from James Clapper or another bigwhig, but these were intentional violations, nevertheless. It's not like they simply tapped the wrong phone. These were clearly malicious acts by NSA workers. Yes, in this particular case they were caught, but we are opening a Pandora's box by granting more and more powers to certain people/institutions within our government.
