Jews ordered to register in east Ukraine

Well, that's a headline you never want to see unless you're doing a history report on the lead-up to World War II.

Jews in the eastern Ukrainian city of Donetsk where pro-Russian militants have taken over government buildings were told they have to "register" with the Ukrainians who are trying to make the city become part of Russia, according to Israeli media.

Jews emerging from a synagogue say they were handed leaflets that ordered the city's Jews to provide a list of property they own and pay a registration fee "or else have their citizenship revoked, face deportation and see their assets confiscated," reported Ynet News, Israel's largest news website.

Ah, according to Israeli media. The order was probably given to everyone as some part of bizarre census and "Israeli media" are just making it out like Jews specifically were being targeted.

The leaflet begins, "Dear Ukraine citizens of Jewish nationality," and states that all people of Jewish descent over 16 years old must report to the Commissioner for Nationalities in the Donetsk Regional Administration building and "register."

Oh.

Olga Resnikova, 32, a Jewish resident of Donetsk, told Ynet she never experienced anti-Semitism in the city until she saw this leaflet.

"We don't know if these notifications were distributed by pro-Russian activists or someone else, but it's serious that it exists," she said. "The text reminds of the fascists in 1941," she said referring to the Nazis who occupied Ukraine during World War II.

Yes, Olga, you probably wouldn't, because that's how antisemitism rolls in Europe, West and East: something terrible is done to the Jews there, then a horror takes over at what has just been done and everyone learns their lesson for the next century (give or take a few years) until the whole thing happens all over again.

Why Jews continue to remain especially in East Europe is a mystery to me.

Eastern Europe?

They were not specicially targetted. Rather, it looks like all non Russians needed to register. Jews, like Russians and Ukrainians are considered a seperate ethnic group. The leaflets were probably distributed by Russian extremists. Even the plan to register "Ukrainians" seems impossible as the division between "Russian" and "Ukrainian" in the area is apparently very blurry.

This is quite disturbing. There are a number of reports collaborating the anti-Semitism from Right Sector in the Ukraine. (http://www.haaretz.com/jewish-world/jewish-world-news/1.5757320) (Svoboda Fuels Ukraine's Growing Anti-Semitism | Jewish & Israel News Algemeiner.com)

No, the reports appear to not be isolated.

Ukrainian Jews seek urgent help from Israel - Israel Jewish Scene, Ynetnews

Rabbi Menachem Margolin, director-general of the European Jewish Association (EJA), has urged Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defense Minister Moshe Ya'alon to urgently send security forces to the Jewish communities in Ukraine, which he says are suffering from a "growing wave of anti-Semitic attacks."

The reported events include a Molotov cocktail thrown at a synagogue in Zaporizhia; an incident which was captured on security cameras; a message sent to the rabbi of Kryvyi Rih that he must leave the city within 72 hours; a writing on the home of the rabbi of Bilytske saying, "We are already near you"; vandalism against a sculpture created by a Jewish artist; and graffiti in favor of the anti-Semitic party.

The leaflets targeted the Jews by name.

It's an unnerving development in any case.

The intent is no different than making firearm owners register here in the United States.

This OP story gives me chills and it's not because of the temperature outside. It's almost as if these separatists were baiting the rest of the world by doing this and daring anyone to defy it.

Great, now Israel will get involved. That's just what the situation calls for. Not.

It will be interesting to see how it is handled if they do get involved. After all, Israel protecting the Jews in Ukraine isn't far off from Putin protecting the Russians.

Is this only in Eastern Ukraine, or is it all over Ukraine?

I don't know why people in this world can't leave other people alone - especially governments.

I wouldn't blame Israel if they get involved. Quite frankly I think that is exactly what Putin wants....

Right, cause Israel is going to militarily invade East Ukraine. You, and Mr. Nick with your guns, take your threadjacking elsewhere, please.

Possibly, or with order deteriorating old sentiments are coming back out to play. With the cycle of antisemitism in Europe this seems plausible to me, although anything can serve as a context for it.

What do you know of eastern europe cardinal? What do you understand of this place in the world other than it's "a bit west of russia". Pathetic.

Your assumption are completely unfounded and try and paint a picture that doesn't exist.

This is happening because a lot of jews and jewish organizations in Ukraine have came out very outspokenly in support of ukrainian independence and territorial integrity. And hence, the pro-russian forces in eastern Ukraine have decided, in order to suppress dissent to the occupation and the inevitable path for russian annexation of eastern ukraine, to intimidate and scare the jews into silence and submission. Just like they did with the tartars in Crimea. It's not about anti-semitism. It's about being eficient at suppressing dissent and it's easy to target a group of people based on their ethnicity. So just target them and the jews who support Ukraine, as per the declaration of jewish organizations, will be intimidated and less likely to cause problems.

You're both talking out of your asses about things you have no understanding of.

I never said that....

However if that did happen just remember who started it...... The communist Putin.

What about my guns? at least I'm not a fascist that supports "registrations."

Is this only in Eastern Ukraine, or is it all over Ukraine?

No, it is only in one city in eastern Ukraine (Donetsk). Furthermore, it is probably not even official.

There are alot of unemployed- and in many cases, unemployable idiots on both sides strutting around in camoflage and carrying a variety of weapons ranging from baseball bats to the latest assualt rifles. Some of the idiots also have access to xeorox machines and can print anything they want and then post it around town.

Read the thread. It isn't one idiot with a photocopier.

After your explanation it seems our knowledge of Eastern Europe is quite clear.

I did read the thread and the source article said this: "it's unclear if the leaflets were issued by the pro-Russian leadership or a splinter group operating within the pro-Russian camp".

So yes, it looks like it is an idiot (in this case a Russian idiot) with a photocopier. Also, in my mind, the advisal to bring your "$50.00 registration fee" points to the idiot possibility.

Right, cause Israel is going to militarily invade East Ukraine. You, and Mr. Nick with your guns, take your threadjacking elsewhere, please.

Threadjacking? I pulled that idea right from one of the articles you posted:

The Israel Air Force aerial demonstration over the death camps in Auschwitz conveyed a clear message that the State would secure the safety of the world's Jews even in foreign countries,"

Ukrainian Jews seek urgent help from Israel - Israel Jewish Scene, Ynetnews

So at least this one Rabbi in Ukraine wants exactly that - military involvement from Israel.

They are being cagey about the veracity of the leaflets because the separatist leader, Pushilin, stupidly pushed himself into a corner by acknowledging that they came from his organization but he 'wasn't sure if they were authorized'. I'm sure they are being roundly scolded for that foolish admission and I wouldn't be surprised if there is damage control from the Russian side going on behind the scenes as this is potentially embarrassing in the extreme.

It isn't that surprising though. For all the (mostly exaggerated) clamor about the Right Sector there is an astonishing level of antisemitism present among the "Cossacks" and ultra-nationalists who have led the unrest.

The intent is no different than making firearm owners register here in the United States.

Wrong. Requiring someone to register their firearm is because of something they're doing or have done. Requiring Jews to register is because of what they were when they were born.
