Nevada GOP drops platforms against abortions, gay marriage, endorses Sandoval | Las Vegas Review-Journal

By a show of hands, convention-goers adopted the platform as proposed by a separate committee without the two planks on marriage and abortion, following the Clark County GOP’s lead in removing hot-button social issues from the party’s statement of its principles. Some 520 delegates attended the convention, but less than half were present when the platform was adopted at about 7:30 p.m. Little debate preceded the vote, a far contrast to earlier in day.

State party Chairman Michael McDonald said it was a successful convention at the end of the day.

“I think it was about inclusion, not exclusion,” McDonald said, referring to the platform. “This is where the party is going.”

Republicans who sat on the platform committee said they decided not to deal with social issues this year because the U.S. Supreme Court and lower courts have weighed in and it doesn’t make sense for the party of “personal freedom” to have the government or the political party get involved in people’s personal lives.

“The issue was how can we back out of people’s personal lives,” said Dave Hockaday of Lyon County, who sat on the platform committee. “We need to focus on issues where we can have an impact.”

Previously, the state party platform defined marriage as “between a man and a woman,” as does the Nevada Constitution. The past document also described the party as “pro-life,” or against abortion, a stance most Republicans still agree with

Hopefully this is the tip of the iceberg and we can start getting this silly fight behind us and focus as a nation on real problems.

THIS....should scare the hell out of Dems.

We do this nationwide....we get back the senate and possibly the White House.

I was just thinking about that. Right now it may be in the best interest of the liberals for the conservatives to keep their opposition strong.

I have no doubt if the rest of the GOP were to adopt this platform, they will not only swarm the 2014 mid-terms but if they kept it would dominate 2016 as well.

While I won't hold my breath for the rest of the GOP doing this I applaud the Nevada GOP for realizing we have much bigger issues than gays getting married or if a woman has an abortion.

We could only hope. But the fact remains that there are quite a few regional voters, who still aspire to all that social tyranny, that the GOP depends on for votes. Politicians being politicians, as they are, there will be GOP candidates who will have to suck up to these people, in these Bugtussle Holler districts, to get elected. Thus, putting a blemish on the entire party, causing the GOP to suffer national repercussions. There just aren't enough moderate, level-headed thinking republicans these days to beat the democrats as a whole. They need those whackozoids votes too. It would be an interesting balancing act to unite those two factions of the party.

But it should please any and everyone who doesn't practice team politics. It pleases me. I at least can see a valid argument in being anti-abortion, but there's not a single legitimate (non-religious) argument against gay marriage.

"it doesn’t make sense for the party of “personal freedom” to have the government or the political party get involved in people’s personal lives"

That may be one of the most sane things I've heard from Republicans in a very long time. Good for them.

There is no chance of repubs doing this nationwide before SCOTUS ends the "controversy" forever.

the SCOTUS sucks at ending controversy. We still got people bitching about Roe vs Wade.

The GOP would see some nice results in the 2014 election if they do this nationwide.

Yes and only fools listen to such "platforms" and "debates", whereas SSM is an actual plethora of rights being deprived to people...for now. I don't expect that will last until 2016 elections

That might be true. It is quite different to drop SSM and Abortion from the state platform and candidates stating acceptance of those two issues on the campaign trail.

They don't need to accept anything....they just need to quit opposing and pissing people off.

If asked on the campaign trail..." do you support gay marriage?"...the correct response is what??? "Read the platform"?

..."I do not oppose it" will be seen as tacit acceptance. The platform is meaningless, the candidates are the holders of the keys.

The correct reply:

I find abortion to be unacceptable....but because I also find personal rights to be important, my opinion must remain just that....my opinion.

"Now...bring that cute little baby up here so I can kiss it and smile for these here cameras."

Same with gay marriage. "I believe marriage is between a man and a woman but I also believe the government has no business dictating that to people for me." And it would have the added benefit of actually being consistent with that personal liberty thing they claim to support.

Ah if it were just that easy...I would be a card carrying member of the GOP.
