The USA and Japan cannot agree on the US trade agreement known as the TPP ( Trans Pacific Partnership ). There are many sticking points for Japan such as their right to set tariffs and import duties. Japan, like most nations considers the protection of vital sectors of economy to be a matter of National Security. The TPP aims to remove all protections.
The reason that I am against the TPP is because it aims to remove our abilities to set our own laws. The TPP is very anti-state and corporate friendly. The USA is wanting the TPP to force us in the Pacific to follow US rules and orders. I am happy to see that USA cant even get Japan to sign up to the TPP.
US trade representative Micheal Fromen has left Tokyo empty handed after two days of talks with Japanese officials. The TPP was always ambitous to say the least. I am not shocked that the US side is having so much trouble getting nations to agree to their imperial trade agreement “We’ve made some progress over the last two days, but there are still considerable differences in our positions on key issues,” Mr Froman said. His counterpart, Akira Amari, the Japanese economy minister, added: “There is still a rather large sense of distance.”
Obama has planned a visit to Japan for later this month and he had been hoping for some rare good news for the US side by being able to announce at least a broad agreement with Japan on the TPP. Officials on both sides have said this is very unlikely due to the two nations being so far apart on so much of the agreement.
Obama has been upstaged by Aussie Prime Minister Tony Abbott who has just left Japan after securing a bilateral trade agreement for Australia with Japan. Abbott also secured a trade deal with South Korea on the same trip. South Korea isnt even interested in being a part of the TPP.
Abbott is also visiting China at the moment to try to secure a new FTA with the Chinese. USA tried to use the TPP to exclude China from the region. Australia is far more interested in free trade agreements that respect the Core Values of nations and agreements that offer mutual benifit. The US side seeks far too much for the corporations that they work for.
Abbotts trade mission in Asia is a good example of why the TPP is not needed. The TPP is not wanted. The main people pushing for the TPP is the US side and it is the US side that have the most to gain from the TPP.
For the US side to be having trouble getting Japan to sign the TPP is not a good sign for the ambitious trade agreement. The US side had hoped to have the TPP rushed through by now with no public discussion. Here in Australia there is a huge ground swell of anti-TPP sentiment. This is despite the fact that the issue has been kept from our media as much as possible. Any citizen that values the sovereignty of their nation should be against their governments signing the TPP agreement. To sign the TPP is to sign away a nations Core Values and their right to choose their own political destiny.
I was starting to think that the US sides little buddy Japan did everything that USA ordered them to do. I am glad to see them standing their ground on the TPP. Japan needs to stand up to the US side more often. Japan needs to think for themselves and stop holding the hand of the US side on every international issue.
