So if North Korea attacks Japan, we will have to go to war with North Korea.

Japan to intercept any North Korea missile deemed a threat | Reuters

Japan will strike any North Korean ballistic missile that threatens to hit Japan in the coming weeks after Pyongyang recently fired medium-range missiles, a government source said on Saturday.

Defense Minister Itsunori Onodera issued the order, which took effect on Thursday and runs through April 25, the day that marks the founding of North Korea's army, the source told Reuters on condition of anonymity.

Following the order, meant "to prepare for any additional missile launches," a destroyer was dispatched to the Sea of Japan and will fire if North Korea launches a missile that Tokyo deems in danger of striking or falling on Japanese territory, the source said.

Tensions have been building between North Korea and its neighbors since Pyongyang - in an apparent show of defiance - fired two Rodong missiles on March 26, just as the leaders of Japan, South Korea and the United States were sitting down to discuss containing the North Korean nuclear threat.

That first firing in four years of mid-range missiles that can hit Japan followed a series of short-range rocket launches over the past two months. The Rodong ballistic missiles fell into the sea after flying 650 km (400 miles), short of a maximum range thought to be some 1,300 km, Japan said.

Since then, North Korea has rattled sabres by firing artillery rounds into South Korean waters, prompting the South to fire back; South Korea has test-fired a new ballistic missile with a range of 500 km; and Pyongyang has threatened an unspecified "new form" of nuclear test.

At the same time, Japan and North Korea resumed talks - suspended since Pyongyang test-launched a long-range missile more than a year ago - over the North's nuclear and missile programs, as well as the fate of Japanese abducted in the 1970s and 1980s to help train North Korean spies.

Onodera has avoided publicly announcing the new missile-intercept order so as not to put a chill on those talks, Japanese media said.

He also did not deploy Patriot missile batteries that would be the last line of Defense against incoming warheads, the source told Reuters.

Japanese Aegis destroyers in the Sea of Japan are equipped with advanced radar equipment able to track multiple targets and carry missiles designed to take out targets at the edge of space.

Well... Yea.... But it wont happen. DPRK isnt that idiotic.

Yes, you are right. But still, we are supposed to, and we are obligated to the defense of too many countries, in my opinion.

I might agree if that was realistic and based on the circumstances. But the point is this is just typical saber rattling from the hermit kingdom.

I think that saber rattling has become rather interesting now that North Korea has nuclear weapons, especially since we are committed to the defense of Japan and have troops in South Korea.

If the probability is based on Jung's level of idiocy, then I would say it's highly likely.

I'm thinking now is a bad time to downsize our military.

Not to mention China and Japan are already cross threaded.

Indeed. I work with this Chinese guy who wasn't even alive during WWII and I was amazed at the level of hostility he feels towards Japan.

And even if they were, it's not our job to defend Japan, they ought to state that if DPRK fires any missile at Japan, Japan will not only shoot it down but they will fire a more powerful missile back, targeting a political target, especially Kim Jong-un's residences and offices, wherever current intelligence indicates that he is. Repeat as long as DPRK remains suicidal.

The orientals have hated each other for thousands of years. This isn't anything new.

I'm not really sure how "If you shoot a missile at us we will shoot down the missile" is news. Like, what is the alternative, exactly?

The North Korean's are just pandering for attention again. Nothing new. Even if they did start a war....they currently cannot even feed their own people.....there is no way that nation can sustain a large conflict of any kind or set up any feasible supply lines. Even if China joined in....would China really be that much of a crutch to them? I don't think so. Not to mention most of North Korean's military equipment is post soviet union...and we're talking like Viet Nam War aged. They wont risk it.

Reality is irrelevant. If Jung thinks he can win, that's all the reason he needs to do something stupid. Look at Desert Storm for an example of a national leader doing something stupid.

Ever heard of the Gulf of Tonkin incident?

Yes i have. Point being?

The Little Kim went to highly rated schools across Europe with other royalty figures. He's well aware how the world views his nation and what their capabilities are. I don't believe he would be that stupid.

Your assuming that an irrational person is going to act rationally.

The goal of a dictator, above all else, is to maintain power. Kim Jong Un can't do that if he attacks Japan or the United States, and he knows it.

It's your opinion that he knows it. Quite a few ruthless dictators have made the same mistake throughout history. What with the exhibitions of weakness and lack of will of late, he may very well be encouraged to disagree with you and make a move.

It's possible that he's losing his grip and believes that a war is just the thing to unite the people behind him. There could also be an internal dick measuring contest that's pressuring him into military action.

Personally, I think that recent events translate into the crazies knowing that The United States is putting itself into a position where it van only fight one front vice multiple fronts.

You're assuming he's irrational. He may just be following the template set behind by his Father and Grandfather. If he wavers even slightly from the way they set he'll lose the delusion that's controlling the people.

I would love to see North Korea launch a missile at a target - That would be the end of "North Korea."

The only reason why North Korea has been allowed to exist the way it has is because China doesn't want any nation too close.

Given currant technology, that whole "too close" thing goes right out the window. North Korea will be done within the next decade.

Rationality is a matter of perspective. We also aren't sure how much control he has over the country. There is a popular theory that a clique of Generals acts as a powerful balance to Kim, or that they might be ruling the country through him.

NK is so closed off that no one really knows who's doing what.

He recently executed his uncle's entire family. Not much to assume, as far as Jung's irrational behavior goes.

I think as long as China remains an economic power, and North Korea does not do anything too radical, China will continue to keep North Korea as a buffer and at some point it will have to integrated into the international scheme in some fashion.
