UPS fires 250 Drivers

UPS fires 250 Employees for Staging a 90-minute Protest to Defend Co-worker.....

UPS is firing 250 Queens, N.Y., drivers for walking off the job during a 90-minute protest in February.

The company dismissed 20 of the workers after their shifts Monday and issued notices of termination to another 230 employees, notifying them that they will be fired once the company has trained their replacements, UPS spokesman Steve Gaut told Business Insider.

The workers were protesting the dismissal of longtime employee and union activist Jairo Reyes, who was fired over an hours dispute, according to Gaut. The New York Daily News first reported on the firings.

Local politicians are threatening to cancel city contracts that give UPS millions of dollars in breaks on parking fines.

"They took a grievance with one employee and turned it into notices of termination with 250 workers," New York City Councilman Jimmy Van Bramer told The Queens Courier. "That’s outrageous. These are good, hardworking employees who have a contract for UPS. To try and break this contract, break this union, is something that is unacceptable and we can’t tolerate."

UPS fired back that it might need to terminate additional employees if the city alters its contract.

One of the workers facing dismissal had just returned to his job after a serious accident, according to the Daily News.

"Domenick DeDomenico, 40, was in a coma for 10 days after getting hit by a car last year while delivering packages for UPS," the Daily News' Ginger Adams Otis reported. "He fought back from serious brain injuries and needed a year of speech and physical therapy."......snip~

If I was those 250 workers I would tell UPS the second any of us are fired to that protest we all will quit.I wonder how well UPS would do if 250 workers just suddenly quit without training their replacements.

My guess is UPS could find 250 replacements rather quickly. I'm sure this time they would make sure the new hires understand they are expected to follow the rules they agreed to when hired.

Heya JR :2wave: .....Yeah but UPS says if the city alters their contract they will need to terminate more. Moreover UPS says their Union even knows they are not suppose to strike the way they did. They lost money and I take it was fined or penalized for not delivering on time. Some of these guys deliver to courts and city halls too.

They are so big it don't matter, 250 people aint crap for a company that big. Work the others into the ground, remind them that they are lucky to have jobs at all and hire at will.

I can't help but admire the workers for standing up for what they believe is right.

Why bother? Every person alive has their sad stories. Besides, he is probably encumbered by his old injuries, so it is a good opportunity to get rid of him and replace him with somebody more suited to the job.

At our current track, I'd say that we're looking at a Blade Runner-esque future of massive income inequality, feeble governments, powerful multi-national industries, and abundant left wing terrorism. The more big corporations keep doing stuff like this, the less people are going to believe in capitalism.

This isn't capitalism--there's corporate welfare involved.

I am thinking UPS over reacted.
The local workers had their protest, the damage was done, move on.
The cost to train 250 new workers will exceed by many times the cost if the protest.

You need live up better to your pen name, longview.

To UPS execs, the protest itself is a secondary concern to its catalyst, which is their right to dismiss a laborer who was in favor of unionization without anyone creating a brand name damaging fuss over it or escalating the effort toward unionization. Taking the long view, UPS executives have proved their willingness to suffer losses to short term profit in order to crush the feeblest expression of pro-union sentiment, therefore staving off the emergence of a labor rival in the management of the company.

If you let them unionize, the next thing you know, they might want space out their vacation days over the course of a year rather than take the full week at once. Disastrous!

Having flown freight for a contractor that serviced UPS, I can tell you they have some of the worst employees in the country and an even worse union.

BTW, if you send something fragile through UPS, don't put a fragile sticker on it...that's just an invitation...no....a mandate to kick it, throw it, stomp on it and anything else they can think of. They hate customers as much as they hate their company. I never ship through UPS...you shouldn't either.

Oh, and I support firing anyone that works at UPS. ANYONE.

If it was an illegal strike, then I say fire them.

Not in the long run.

If they go unpunished, they will do it again, and the the union has precedent saying they let it slide last time.

The 250 I would say isn't to give them time to train employees. That's a ruse. They are looking for as many as possible to quit, so it doesn't change their unemployment insurance rates by much.

If it was an illegal strike, then I say fire them.

that is pretty much what it was an illegal strike and walk out. hence why they are fired. what is worse is they are defending a guy that appears to have cooked his timesheets which is why he was dismissed to begin with.

which in any company i know of is automatic dismissal.

Re: UPS fires 250 Employees for Staging a 90-minute Protest to Defend Co-worker.....

In an economy where millions of Americans are out of work and millions more have given up and stopped looking, I have little sympathy for a bunch of hot-heads who took their union steward's advice and pissed away their jobs.
Corrupt Democrat Party politicians and local NYC unions have been in bed for a very long time_

These bold overpaid union workers believe their political connections make them untouchable_

But this time the good guys appear to have been pushed too far and finally took action_

I only hope UPS stands it's ground and doesn't cave to the coming union and political pressure_

All's well that ends well.

UPS Will Re-Hire 250 Queens Drivers Fired For Protest

UPS says it will no longer terminate the 250 drivers who were set to be fired after staging a protest walkout at the company's Maspeth facility in February. The company, which was criticized by local elected officials for the mass firing, has reached an agreement with the International Brotherhood of Teamsters. The union will be required to pay any damages incurred by the protest in exchange for the workers' jobs......

I agree. I was very OK with such a firing. I wouldn't tolerate such employees if I had a business.
