U.S. requires new cars to have backup cameras[W:26]

Well let's see. By 2025 the average MPG for every car sold must be almost 56mpg. For the largest market in the U.S., California, 1 out of every 5 cars sold must be ZERO emissions. The list goes on.
You know that will never happen, right? It's just a feel good thing. No Congress has the power to impose regulation on a future Congress. That's why those budget resolutions that call for cost cutting over the next (how ever long it will be that they are out of office) always get rolled back.

This is interesting, how so?

Well, it seems to me, eventually, only certain groups of people will be able to afford to own and operate private vehicles in California. Older cars will begin to fail and not be able to be replaced.

Perhaps they need to teach you how to drive? j/k

J/k or not, I haven't had an at-fault accident in about 15 yrs, nor a moving violation in about 10. I drive 30-40 hours a week on the job and about 6 more off the job. :)

Just 2 words. Wind tunnel. All cars are designed ina wind tunnel and the design comes out the way it comes out.

Have you notices Little bumps on the headlights and mirrors? That is to direct the wind over the car no matter how ugly the Little car pimples are.

In a few years all the cars will be looking the same so it won't matter which one you buy.

Actually the three little bumps on headlights are reference points for headlamp alignment equipment. True story. They are computerized now (used to have level bubbles and mirrors in them), they attach to the headlamp lens with suction cups and measure horizontal, vertical, and parallel angles. How many of you already knew that?

Congress has nothing to do with it. They have no control. These rules are regulatory mandates from Government Agencies.

The only way to change these regulatory mandates is to defund the EPA, and in the case of ZERO emission sales in California, defund the California Air Resources Board.

I don't see that happening any time soon, but there is always hope.

Right but you mentioned traffic in California in relation to the back up cameras. They are not used in traffic, just when the car is in reverse, so I got confused how the two related.

Do you really trust a computer controlled system? What happens when the computer goes crazy when you are using the "Smart" cruise control?

None of my cars have them, but they don't "go crazy". If a sensor is not working they remain disabled and turn on a service light. A scan tell will tell you which sensor is malfunctioning. Likewise, is the airbag or SRS light is on, your airbags will not deploy. If an ABS light is on your brakes will function like normal brakes without the antilock function. These systems are designed to not cause mechanical failure.

Oh. I see. Well, I was suggesting the always growing list of regulatory mandates is eventually going to add so much to the price of a car, very few people will be able to afford to purchase them. Hence, the roads will clear out, and it will be like the old days again here in So Cal.

I am not outraged. But if they should mandate that a car have anything it should be speed limiters. ********ing douche bag assholes speed all the ****ing time with at least ten-twenty miles over the speed limit. They act as though somehow those are really speed suggestion signs instead of speed limit signs.During non-rush hour traffic they ride up close enough behind your vehicle that if they were any closer then they would owe you dinner and a movie and it doesn't matter if you are doing the speed limit or just going 5 miles over the speed limit.

What are you talking about? They ARE suggestions. Guidelines, if you will. Drive this fast whenever you are not in a hurry signs. ;)

I don't like having to focus on the small screen then refocus my eyes to long distances again. I think a heads up display is the best thing they have ever invented to help in nothaving to look down at the dash, especially at night, and then back at the road.

Maybe they should mandate heads-up displays.

I like those too. My wife's old Grand Prix had it. Some asshole rearended her and totaled it. I have astigmatism, it was wonderful before I got the contacts to correct it.

OK that explains it. That is a nice thought but there will always be older cars in LA. The cars don't rust and people take care of them really well there.

If it's required equipment, it will be required to be maintained.

That's where the real cost will be. Getting it fixed.

And for many cars, a lot of these systems tend to all fail at around the same time. Cheaper to just get a new car. Possible ulterior motive?

I'm sure everyone raised hell about ABS, too, though.

U.S. require new cars to have backup cameras - Mar. 31, 2014

Cue up the right wing outrage. My left wing self thinks this is a great idea. I suspect most of us have backed into something over the course of time.

They are nice, not sure if they should be mandated, just going to increase costs and is another thing to break. If you can afford it, great. But I don't think it's such a great improvement that it would require mandating.

Kinda like Cuba.

I know, I own a few myself. The problem is keeping Sacramento from outlawing them, which they have tried to do.

It's all about the environment here, and Hemi Cuda's driven 1,000 miles per year are going to end all life forms on Earth.

For newer smog controlled cars, if they don't pass the bi-annual inspection, they will eventually be banned from use. As it is, they get shoved into Gross Polluter class and the clock is ticking on allowing them to remain on the road.

There are ways around that. It is easy.

They will eventually come after you with Black Helicopters and road side "sniffers" to find the polluters.

If one is found to have obtained a smog cert by "easy" methods, the car is confiscated, as well as ones money, and who knows, perhaps freedom.

One has to remember we are referring to California here, nothing is too far from reality...

I know we are talking about California. there are many excemptions to having to get the smog certificate in the first place and a person can do one of those. There are also other states that do not require smog certs close by. I used to do it all the time.

With all these new safety mandates makes me wonder how I made it through childhood. No car seat, no seat belts, etc.

Backup cameras are a nice to have. Making them manditory is a bit much. Guess we need a front camera also. Little ones up close the vehicle you can't see either.

And when some mom backs over her kid because she was looking at her phone instead of her camera a new radar device will be mandatory that auto stops the car when it detects an object. I wonder how much that will cost. I think we also need ladders that have 50 lb blocks of concrete attached to each leg too. Ladders kill!

I'm a right winger and I'm in favor of this. It's a safety item, like seat belts and airbags.

Besides, people are idiots when they're backing out of parking spaces, maybe this will help.

I remember similar whining and bitching when airbags became mandatory.
