Labor board: Northwestern University football players can unionize

nfl, nba, nhl, mls.

OK, so $125 million per team like the NFL? Revenue is similar already.

Does the center back for the women's soccer team get the same amount as the quarterback? I'll bet Title IX says she does.

This will change college athletics forever.

If football players get paid, what about the golf team, the women's soccer team, the water polo team, etc? Will those sports be dropped altogether? If athletes strike, do they forfeit their scholarships? Can a team at one school strike on its own? Do athletes at Texas get a piece of the Longhorn Network revenues? Where is this going to go?

Funny, I thought getting an entire college education paid for at a major university was quite a reward to begin with, not to mention the unlimited amount of exposure that could lead to a lucrative pro career for the elite players.

I think this kills college athletics altogether except for football and men's basketball. Problem is, Title IX requires a school to offset the scholarships with women's sports, so it might even kill football and basketball, too at smaller schools.

This is insanity.

They won't drop sports but it could hurt scholarships. IE no more scholarships if you want to play then you play for free. it is an extracurricular activity. you will have to pay tuition just like everyone else on campus does.

you are right it pretty much does if the appeal doesn't knock it down.

Title IX revolves around strictly sex, no performance. This might open up the door to performance standards.

Nah. It won't cause a problem. Sure, we'll probably see tuition for a state college hit $55-60k per semester (in state rate) but all that means is that we'll need more federal funding for college. It'll be kind of cool to finish a bachelors with $250k of student loan debt and job opportunities in the $25-35k/yr range.

They can't. atheletic money cannot come from educational funds. this is an NCAA ruling. all college atheletics must be self funded by the athletic department to prevent the very thing you said from happening.

what you will see is season and game tickets go through the roof. which will mean loss of revenue as people can't afford the game tickets.
but what do you expect from a bunch of union people on a labor board.

also if they are considered employee's that means any scholarship is therefore considered income and taxable. i sure hope that they have enough money to pay all the taxes.

Good. Universities need to get back to the business of education not sports.

The NCAA is opposed to this ruling. The NLRB is the 'decider' in this case. As far as no bleedover to the academic side I think that may be a little shortsighted. If the athletes can unionize then why not graduate teaching assistants, research students, etc.?

they do educate and provide education to thousands of kids who wouldn't get a chance to afford college.
you don't know what you are talking about.

they actually tried to do this and the labor board before ruled that they were not employee's that they were doing it for the benefit of their education and therefore were not employee's.

That seems to have changed.

You mean you're for the use of unpaid labor to generate profits to subsidize unprofitable sports?

The University of Texas Longhorns earned $109 million in revenue from their operation.

The Dallas Cowboys earned $539 million in revenue.
The Oakland Raiders earned $229 million in revenue.

The Raiders had a payroll of $53,446,196

I think that College Football is earning a lot of money off the labor of their college players and the data suggests that this is indeed so.

Yes that is their revenue, but you have to realize that almost all sports revenue comes from football and basketball. the school offers scholarships for non-revenue sports as well.
that money isn't just for football but for the athletic department as a whole.

it has to pay for trainers, medical, coaches, buildings, travel, meals, scholarships etc ... for all sports teams.
the net revenue is a lot less.

Re: NLRB rules NW University footballers can unionize

Look for 7-8 years of appeals and then the face of college sports will be changes forever. I can see all colleges dropping athletics and they will be replaced by club level sports.

Gosh, I hope you're wrong.

You mean you're for the use of unpaid labor to generate profits to subsidize unprofitable sports?

they are compensated in more ways than one. again you don't know what you are talking about.

That seems to have changed.

yep and schools will change as well. they will simply not offer scholarships for sports.
if you want to play then you play on your own free time, and are charged full tuition.

there is nothing for them to bargain for. they are then no longer employee's they are simply students. of course you will see 90% of college athletes drop out because they can't afford it.

I didn't say they weren't compensated I said they weren't paid.

Take a gander at this and then come back when you feel you're read to post again

Thats great. Lets hope it kills college athletics altogether. Its a stupid concept..

We are the only country in the world that treats our colleges like sports teams. Its bizarre.

they were paid. they got a free ride to college with all books, classes, free room and board, free trainers, free medical staff, free training room etc..

i added it up and on average a college athlete receives about 100k+ in benefits plus a degree, and a chance to make it in the NFL.
so please don't tell me they didn't get paid. they are more compensated than non-sports students ever will be.

of course then again they aren't employee's they are students. in order to play for the college team they have to make the grades, and attend class and enroll in school.
this was a bogus ruling by a stacked board of union supporters.

i see what northwestern and other private schools will do if the appeal fails and they can't go further they will just end their sports programs.
which means the hundreds of kids that get to attend school won't be able to.

So if your employer didn't actually give you money but instead a bunch of stuff they thought you needed would you feel as if you were being paid?

so you think kids that can't afford college shouldn't go? you do realize that will only make the poverty level higher right?
a lot of these kids are taken out of very bad situations and given a second chance at life where their only other option is to join a gang or
engage in other criminal activity. some are the first kids in their family to attend college.

But do they really go to class, study just as hard, required to make a minimum grade level, and play football, travel all over the country... I've always thought (perhaps incorrectly) that most college athletes may on paper be required to meet grades and minimums to keep their scholarship --- that most of that was just theatre. The college courses and profs pass these kids no matter what they do as long as they're performing on the field. Am I totally wrong? I have to admit I didn't know nor hang out with one full ride scholarship athlete when I went to college so I have no personal information at all.

only if i agreed to it. you see i don't have to agree to it.

i wish my employer would pay for my housing, food etc ...

unfortunately for you they are not employee's the condition on them playing sports to begin with is
1. getting into college and making the grades for a scholarship. the NCAA has the requirement to get a Div1 scholarship GPA at 2.6.
2. They have to maintain that GPA through college in order to continue to play.

they are students. they choose to play football in exchange for free schooling.

I have friends that played sports at various different schools and it kind of depends on the school. I've had friends at Carolina tell me they didn't have to do anything really to pass, but I've had friends at BU say otherwise, however I know the hockey team got away with more.

of course they have to attend class. most college have requirements on attendance or you are dropped from the class.
it depends on the college you attend but they are there.

Re: NLRB rules NW University footballers can unionize

Northwestern will drop football, and as a result no other teams will even attempt it for a long time

:rofl !!! You've GOT to be kidding me!
