Obama to Call for End to N.S.A.’s Bulk Data Collection

Please. The congress and the senate also have a lot to do with the department of defense and the intelligence agencies. Ever heard of checks and balances? We don't live in a dictatorship where the chief executive has unlimited power and can change things on a dime by one phone call. Sometimes I wish we did as we'd get more done but we don't. So give up your argument. It's crap.

Let me say it again: THE NSA IS UNDER DIRECT AUThORITY OF THE PRESIDENT. HE HAS THE AUTHORITY TO ORDER OPERATONS HALTED.

That still does not mean POTUS has unprecedented authority to do whatever he wants. Why do you think Bush had to pass the Patriot Act to get the wide range surveillance system we have now?

You really dont know the difference. Do you? Incredible!

Let me say it again: THE NSA IS UNDER DIRECT AUThORITY OF THE PRESIDENT. HE HAS THE AUTHORITY TO ORDER OPERATONS HALTED.

And deprive Congress a vote on it in an election year?

Please, we all know what will happen. It will go on until 2016, when both candidates will jump and down telling us they don't like it. Then whoever wins the election won't do anything.

Why cant you answer the question?

Really? Can he?

Where's the law that orders the NSA to gather all our phone calls? That's right there isn't one. So don't mix your comment about Bush with something clearly under Obama's control. Getting permission is one thing, taking it away is another.

The law that gives them the power to do that is called the patriot act....

That's right there isn't one.
No there is.

So your not going to answer the question. You claim that bills are not needed for a POTUS to order an agency to do something. The question was why then did Bush have to pass the patriot act to get these powers?

Hell yes! :applaud This is definaltey a step in the right direction. Its clear that the people of this country what these kind of practices ended. Its definaltey a start, but its not perfect. I expect most people accept this as a definate step in the right direction.

Sounds like an attempt at deflection to me.

Why doesn't Obama just choose to ignore the law that gives the NSA these powers and order them to stop? Where's that big pen he's been talking about? Doesn't Obama appoint the head of the NSA as a cabinet post?

Show me someone who thinks this is anything but a political maneuver and I'll show you a fool.

Probably because he approves of what the NSA is doing! For heaven sakes, you don't expect him to listen to the people of this country who object to this, do you? :2mad: Look at the ACA as a prime example of what I mean.

After hitting nearly 70 degrees yesterday, *very welcome, BTW*, it's 57 degrees here today, with rain forecast for tomorrow. How's your area?

Greetings, CJ. :2wave:

Obama is finally doing something because Dianne Feinstein told him to.

Good afternoon Lady P.

All is good here - beautiful, sunny day - a little brisk, but I like that - no hats, no gloves, no heavy coats, can't complain, and most of the snow is gone so all is good.

So he and his ****ing minions FIRST deny it's happening then they turn around and claim they will "stop it."

He shouldn't be calling for **** that's just grandstanding.

He should issue orders to make them stop

That doesn't change the fact that the president can put it to a stop with an executive order.

No where does it say that the NSA is mandated by law to conduct these surveillance operations.

Oh sure, he could....but the House members or the Senators up for re-election don't want to miss their chance to vote on it. They need their chance to grandstand too.

All the more reason for Obama to exert his actual authority and issue an order putting a halt to it.

Except it's a good thing to have, so he's using his authority in the best way: to not halt it.
