Whatever signal you want it to. Transponders aren't hard-coded to identify a particular airplane. They send out a four digit code that is assigned dynamically by ATC each flight.

Put bluntly: Our air traffic control system assumes you are who you say you are.

hard to know. makes a lot more sense than terrorists trying to take the plane to 45k feet. if this theory is right, then the pilots are being maligned in the media. i hope they find the plane.

That's been my theory, or at least something relatively similar to that. All the news reports have occasionally caused me to think otherwise, but when the glitches in those reports ultimately get pointed out, I keep coming back to an electrical problem that caused all of this, and an electrical fire makes it fit all that much more.

True, if you have the money to buy one. Wasn't the cost for that one somewhere around half a billion? Seems to me it would be worth stealing. People steal cars at some risk to themselves, after all, and they're a lot cheaper.

If nothing else that at least proved that neither Rush or the caller can count, as neither were able to figure out how many years have passed since 1990.

The caller shot down Rush's theory pretty quickly.

Nether of them can do simple subtraction.

And Rush didn't blame "liberals", "these liberals" or the "lamestream media" for the disappearance of the airplane! Amazing, just astounding!

A state actor would be required to hide the thing. You can't just land a 777 in a field somewhere, load it up, and expect it to get airborne again. Heavily loaded (bomber, right?) that thing needs about 10,000 feet of very solid concrete to get off the ground. How many 10,000 foot strips of reinforced concrete exist in that part of the world? How many of them aren't used by anyone? Zero, is my guess. You're landing at a major international airport or a military base. And when the entire planet is looking for a 777 that day, every single person at that airfield needs to keep their mouth shut or the jig is up.

The plane did not land anywhere safely.

Probably not, but still it could have landed at a military airstrip in a rogue nation. How about Pakistan? Aren't there places there that a jet could land?
