Fox News said:
Republican David Jolly defeated Democrat Alex Sink on Tuesday in a Tampa-area House district where ObamaCare got its first test ahead of November's midterm elections and Democrats and Republicans spent millions of dollars auditioning national strategies for the rest of the year. With nearly 100 percent of the vote counted, Jolly had 48.5 percent of the vote to Sink's 46.7 percent. Libertarian Lucas Overby had 4.8 percent.
The race to replace the late Rep. Bill Young was considered a tossup, and was cast as a political bellwether, and a testing ground for each party's messaging strategy -- which revolves in part around the Affordable Care Act.
"As your congressman, I will always be accessible. I will serve humbly and with honor," Jolly told supporters at a victory rally. "While this campaign has seemed at times to be partisan, your next congressman is not partisan."
Jolly, a former aide to Young, had, along with Republican groups spent millions to hammer his Democratic opponent over ObamaCare.

Sink was identified by many as the better candidate, had lots of money, ran a better campaign. In this part of Florida both candidates had to be somewhat conservative of fiscal matters to even run in the district. Lauded by many including MSNBC's crew at Morning Joe (click here for the video) as a "belweather" election which will set the tone for Novembers mid-term elections, Jolly's win tonight should signal deep concerns for the DNC.

MSNBC said:
“Tonight, one of Nancy Pelosi’s most prized candidates was ultimately brought down because of her unwavering support for ObamaCare, and that should be a loud warning for other Democrats running coast to coast,” Congressman Greg Walden, chairman of the National Republican Congressional Committee, said in a statement. I hope this a preview for this November.

Evening Cgrad, from what I have read several are saying if the Democrats couldn't win this one, they are sure hurting come November. Jolly had 48.5 percent of the vote to Sink's 46.7 percent. Libertarian Lucas Overby had 4.8 percent. Here again we had another libertarian thrown into the race (most likely by design) just like we did in Virginia a couple of months ago (Sarvis who happened to be a former bundler for Obama) that peeled away enough votes from the Republican candidate in a very close race. This district however is 37 percent Republican, 35 percent Democrat and 24 percent independent. Rand Paul made Robo calls targeting libertarians, asking them to support the Republican candidate Jolly over Overby who at one time was polling a good 6%. Paul Ryan was another who went down to campaign for Jolly. Sink got Bill Clinton himself but it wasn't enough.

There is only one main party; you're all wasting your time.

I hope this a preview for this November.
Not to rain on your parade but thats been a Republican seat for almost all of the last 60 years. The tea party right winger made it close. An establishment Republican would have won by 15-20 points.

Since GOP posters are all giddy on this thread, try not to think about who is running for governor this year from the GOP, and not just in Florida .

lets be fair NIMBY, if the DNC had won, the left would be giddy, and making claims saying..."see obamacare is not even an issue"

Let's not be fair ernst, since you didn't mention the last time DEMs held this seat.
Please continue your odor of overconfidence .

over confidence...what leads you to this conclusion?

there was a libertarian in the race....

Bull**** leads him to that conclusion, because there's zero evidence for him to base it on.

Eloquence once again is not the friend of GOP over-confident posters.
Gloat for 5+ months until this exact race is run again, a race in which GOPs have been in charge for 40+ years.
See ya in the mid-terms, starting with unpopular GOV Scott, hurting the down ticket .

You said you hoped it was a preview for November. To me that sounds like you want it to be some kind of mandate.

That is not a mandate what so ever.

Once again, a rather meaningless interim election whose results are overstated because its a meaningless interim election... and we have nothing better to do....

"With a few exceptions, the national implications of House special elections are almost always overblown, hyped by partisans and over-analyzed by the media. The victory Tuesday of Republican David Jolly over Democrat Alex Sink in Florida’s thirteenth congressional district wasn't an exception, but it served as a test-case messaging gurus on both sides of the aisle can use to inform future contests."

Florida's special election wasn

So let me see if I get this straight...you have a Democratic candidate that the party threw mountains of cash at (outspent opposition by about 2-1), brought in heavy hitters for fundraisers and endorsements, had tremendously bigger name recognition and lost in whats truly a swing district (which Obama carried in both 2008 and 2012) and people think there is no signficance here? While its not something monumental, this election spells some trouble for Democrats going into the mid-term seasons. While the GOP may screw it up (entirely possible), this is shaping up to be a pretty bad year for Democrats. Possibly could rival 2010.

I don't think it is a big indicator or anything like that...But it does follow what polls are saying right now about how the people feel about O-care.

On that an update from MY OWN company insurance....

We just got a packet this week it laid out:

My deductibles are going up by 75%
My co-pays stay the same
My prescriptions go from a flat $20 co pay to $20 co pay + 20%
My ER cost are going up by 200% (from $100 to $300)
and My premium is going up by 40%

Plus they dropped my wife from coverage because her work offers insurance as well, however it is better in some places, and worse in others....

So in essence, you could say that my premiums just doubled plus a 40% increase. You want to know what the average person like me is going to be thinking about going into the polls? It is that Obama, Pelosi, and the demo's promised that "the average family would see a $2500. savings in their premium cost per year." That was a lie....That "if you like your insurance, you'll be able to keep it" was a lie, at least in my wife's case. And I am going to be awfully scared at how demo's are purposely breaking the HC system.

I am going to be thinking of that among other things that demo's have done, and it doesn't look good for them.

Particularly in a district held easily by Republicans for almost 50 yrs.

You need to look at the totality. The libertarian drew from mostly Republican inclined voters and the victor was a tea party republican running against an opponent who was probably a fairly conservative Democrat.

For those that say "Republicans" have held the seat for 50 years, you need to correct yourself. It was held by one guy for 50 years. Every analyst said, for years, that when Young died/retired, it would be a Democratic party seat. Case closed.

Here's an article from 3 months ago calling this election a "must win" for Democrats.

The Race Democrats Can't Afford to Lose | Rothenblog

Sink ran for governor in 2010, and only lost by 61k votes, after being outspent by 70 million. Not only that, Sink captured 51% of the vote in this district during that election, matching what Obama got in 2012. Sink also had a huge money advantage over Jolly, 1 million to 175k in January.

The DCCC sent out a press release on Oct 9th of last year, saying that "FL-13 will elect a Democrat in this competitive district that twice elected President Obama". Contrast that with thier press release from yesterday, which said "FL-13 is a heavily Republican district".

Spin spin spin.

This was a huge loss for the DNC. more due to the amount of money that they spent on the race only to lose it.

as for the Gov race neither candidate is good. i prefer scott to crist simply because he doesn't really pass anything and is bringing jobs.
crist is nothing more than a political hack.

wasn't that good of a Gov. then sold out to the teacher unions to try and gain more political favor. Got mad when he lost the primary for senator to rubio.
ran as an independent to try and get in only to lose to rubio in the main election by a landslide.

now is a democrat. i have no use for him and neither should the people of florida. he is a sell out.

not only that he will put the state of FL in a deeper hole with him wanting to expand medicaid. good thing that the Fl congress is mostly republican and usually stays that way.
so he won't be able to expand it without there approval.

O.K. would portend be a better word?

Not really no. My comment was me just stating what I hope for the future, not what is going to happen.

So you're insurance coverage was garbage and now you have better insurance and it cost a little more. Got it.
