A new Pew Research survey seems to indicate that millenials, the age group from 18 to 33, tend to favor gay rights and marijuana legalization. and tend to vote for Democrats. I think it is highly likely that Democrats have embraced these two issues to drive a stake in the heart of the Republican party. Recall recently how Obama spoke in favor of marijuana legalization and came out in favor of gay rights.

Is the Republican Party in danger of dying out? - The Week

A new Pew Research survey finds a demographic trend in the United States that threatens to push the Republican Party into permanent minority status unless it changes quickly.

The survey found that millennials — the generation of adults between the ages of 18 and 33 — vote heavily Democratic and have "liberal views on many political and social issues, ranging from a belief in an activist government to support for same-sex marriage and marijuana legalization."

They are also the most racially diverse generation in American history and it’s a key factor in explaining their political liberalism.

Or maybe liberals just think that gays have rights and smoking refer ain't no sin!

Re: The Reason Democrats Are Backing Gay Rights and Marijuana Legalization

Why is it that every time the Democratic Party takes a socially liberal stance on an issue, the default argument is that they're just sucking up for votes?

Many democrats were for this before they were each so popular. Damn they have great foresight.

That's what Democrats do.

Haven't you ever looked at what is under the Democrat tent ? It's a frickin carnival.

It was just a few years ago that Karl Rove put gay marriage issues on the ballots to drive a stake in the Democratic Party. Not anymore.

Re: The Reason Democrats Are Backing Gay Rights and Marijuana Legalization

This could backfire though. The millenials could get so high on election day and forget to vote.

Because if you look at the positions of the GOP, it's obvious that they're not going after votes. :lamo

Actually, gay rights and marijuana legalization is a libertarian position...at least it ought to be, if libertarians had a clue what the word really stood for instead of just trying to stealthily redefine conservatism.

The default position among conservatives seems to be that the GOP takes the policy positions it does because values, America, and common sense, and the Democratic Party takes its positions simply to pander to the shiftless poors.

Many democrats were for this before they were each so popular. Damn they have great foresight.

But some liberal Democrats allowed the smoke to clear and said wait a minute. When your young you think you know it all. But when you mature and if your brain hasn't already been fried on drugs you start looking at things diffrently.

>"California Governor Jerry Brown said he is not sure legalizing pot is a good idea in his state because the country could lose its competitive edge if too many people are getting stoned. If pot smoking gains more legitimacy in the nation’s most populous state, Brown said he worries it could have negative ripple effects.

“The problem with anything, a certain amount is OK. But there is a tendency to go to extremes,” he said in a wide-ranging interview aired Sunday on NBC’s “Meet the Press.” “And all of a sudden, if there’s advertising and legitimacy, how many people can get stoned and still have a great state or a great nation?”

Californians voted to legalize medical marijuana in 1996. But Brown said he is watching closely to see how Colorado and Washington handle their new laws that go a step further by regulating the growth and sale of taxed pot at state-licensed stores.

“We have medical marijuana, which gets very close to what they have in Colorado and Washington. I’d really like those two states to show us how it’s going to work,” he said. “The world’s pretty dangerous, very competitive. I think we need to stay alert, if not 24 hours a day, more than some of the potheads might be able to put together.”..."<

Of course, there's no lock step unity of thought. You can find disagreement in both parties. That's why I always laugh at you guys when you go off about lefties and such. That's just playing stereotypes and not discussing issues. And yes, both sides do that.

Maybe, but should a parties sole role be to get votes and not govern?

Ahhh how quickly some forget the 60's! The democrats have always been bashed for pulling minorities and 'druggies'. I'd say pot smokers have always had a home in the Democrat party, so why ask that question now? Gays are not by nature democrats any more than Hispanics are. Howsomever the GOP has been pulled so far into the social CON camp that neither Hispanics nor gays feel welcome.

I don't see it so much the Dems embracing gays and potheads as the GOP shunning them.

Re: The Reason Democrats Are Backing Gay Rights and Marijuana Legalization

I'd agree, however:

Why is it that whenever such an accusation is made, people on the side discussed don't reply, "damn right. I prefer to win. Do you prefer to lose and remain powerless so you can have a following of but a few?"

Re: The Reason Democrats Are Backing Gay Rights and Marijuana Legalization

Maybe, but should a parties sole role be to get votes and not govern?

One could say the GOP made a calculation to get votes so they could govern but that equation was built on some false equations.

hard to govern out of power, difficult to claim to be 'the voice of the people' as a minority party. Being a power in sparsely populated areas may get Congressional seats and governorship, but it won't carry the nation. Something between the two extremes from both sides of the political debate would be a welcome change and a real winner...

History.

Re: The Reason Democrats Are Backing Gay Rights and Marijuana Legalization

That's true, but again, what does history tell us about the other side? Taking up a stance to get votes is probably one of the oldest tricks in the book by any stretch of the imagination. If Democrats are having liberal positions so they can get X number of voters with similar views, do you suppose that Republicans are virtuous members of society that adopt a policy simply and only because it's what's right and best? No, they make calculations as well. While Romney was perhaps making remarks about the 47%, he was also sweetening the deal for one portion of his voter base: those with wealth. Hardly surprising, and not necessarily a bad thing either.

Re: The Reason Democrats Are Backing Gay Rights and Marijuana Legalization

No, liberals don't actually support liberty. I have never seen a liberal support any sort of hint at liberty without government involvement.

Re: The Reason Democrats Are Backing Gay Rights and Marijuana Legalization

Because democrats are only interested in government power.

Re: The Reason Democrats Are Backing Gay Rights and Marijuana Legalization

Because democrats are only interested in government power.

Which is, of course, nonsense insofar as the idea that the Republicans are somehow less interested than the Democrats in getting and maintaining power is also nonsense.

No, liberals don't actually support liberty. I have never seen a liberal support any sort of hint at liberty without government involvement.

This is also nonsense. Define "government involvement" in the case of, say, marijuana legalization.

I never said anything about the republicans.

Do you know the difference between decriminalization and legalization? Tell me, how much control is still on pot in those places like Colorado?

Re: The Reason Democrats Are Backing Gay Rights and Marijuana Legalization

I never said anything about the republicans.

The standalone claim that the Democrats are only interested in political power carries the implication that the GOP are somehow not.

Do you know the difference between decriminalization and legalization? Tell me, how much control is still on pot in those places like Colorado?

So the fact that a substance is legal but still regulated means no "liberty"?
