For First Time, Kremlin Signals It Is Prepared to Annex Crimea [W:153]

Which is why Putin is going to do exactly what he wants. He knows no one is going to lift a finger to stop him.

Serious economic sanctions can hurt, and he's at risk. He's also at risk for losing a seat on the UN Security Council and the veto that goes with it.

And if those concequences dont have the desired effect?

How is he at risk of losing Russia's permanent seat on the Security Council as enshrined in the UN Charter exactly? The UN Charter makes it impossible for any permanent member from the Security Council to be removed without its consent. Even an amendment to the UN Charter cannot pass unless all members of the UN Security Council approve it. The only hope for any UN condemnation of Russia is to pass a measure on the General Assembly and that would have no real effect even it were able to pass. No move on the table allows for any binding action against Russia at the UN level.

Of course not, why would I? Do you think the US has any plans on annexing any countries?

You don't know about New Mexico, Arizona, California, Hawaii, for starters??

I can see a certain similarity between the German take over Sudetenland and Russia annexing Crimea. The difference is that Putin does not have such an disgusting ideology as Germany had during the 1930-ies.

The US started the Ukrainian problem, Russia is responding. The US covertly supported the violent overthrow of the elected Ukrainian government, the protesters fired upon his caravan as he was fleeing, seized control of the military and declared independence, and the US finds this the legitimate government, yeah, same old same old we've been watching for sometime now, only Russia's starting to push back. China too in their own way.

Do you think the only two options are total inaction and all out invasion?

You can ignore Russia as they had ignored us for so long, or you can stop them and force them out. (But good luck with that)

And doesn't have designs beyond the Ukraine. And had it not been for US intrigue in the Ukraine to begin with, we wouldn't even be talking about this. It's not as though Putin woke up one morning and decided to take over Europe.

I don't know enough about this to really comment intelligently. But that's never stopped me before. I seem to remember, when John McCain was running against Obama, that many people thought our country and perhaps the world would be exploited because Obama would be perceivedas a weak leader . . . That's IF this is even a bad thing. If Crimeans want to secede and become part of Russia, who are we to get involved??

Honestly i think Obama is right here. This is a situation that could so easily escalate into a nasty war and it's a situation with all bad choices.

Russia is going to do this no matter who is in charge because they know the risk calculations and it came out in their favor in short of all out war.

I personally would rather lose Crimea than potentially millions of lives and every indication is that Putin is willing to go to this level of conflict.

But given the geopolitical situation, if Europe alights than a bunch of the world is going to take advantage of the distraction and fight wars of their own.

Israel will go to war with the Middle East for example. China will begin to gobble up the terrify they want too. It's potentially a huge mess.

How do you know he didn't?

He's willing to go all the way, because he knows Obama isn't willing to do anything.

He is willing to go all the way because he is Putin and knows the world isn't. He is a smart man. There is far more to this than Putin versus Obama at the ok coral.

There is literally no interaction that the US in any nation that Monte doesn't disagree with. Just think about that. That's hardcore.

The USA does it with banking and corporate hegemons. Is there a difference. Ask the Ukrainians if they want their standard of living lowered and gas costs increased and retirements slashed to satisfy the IMF.
