US prepares $1B aid package for troubled Ukraine.....

I consider the lives it could be saving here at home first.

The trick to better foreign relations is for you to consider the lives abroad first and then expect reciprocity from that engagement.

Heres a very good post I read on Andrew Sulllivans blog, discussing how the neo cons like McCain want to rattle sabers and consider military intervention, but they dont recognize the profound damage that Putin is doing to himself and to Russia by putting on this display.

Really excellent read.

That's a great piece.

What damage is he doing to himself?

Maybe you should read.

Rank speculation on Sullivan's part, his crystal ball may be cracked. I think Putin will come out of this looking like he always does - a hero to his people. The people who hated him before will still hate him, and the rest will think he's a pretty damn good leader. The Ukraine will still be the pipeline nation inbetween the producer and the consumer and will remain brothers with Russia (they have common interests) and now they'll be wiping their asses with a billion dollars courtesy of our failed POTUS.

This isn't the Cold War and Russia isn't the superpower it used to be. Bullying Ukraine gains him nothing but negative response from the global community. Younger Russians do not buy into this old school, Cold War muscle flexing mentality. They don't want conflict. They don't want Russian foreign policy written with a Kalashnikov. He looks desperate. His attempt to bag Ukraine politically failed and resulted in his man getting run out of town, now he has to resort to military force to try and coerce them.

The image he built of himself, especially since Syria, is shattering on the world stage. He looks like thug with no options other than muscle. We can sit back and watch this spin downward for him and Russia and we don't have to do a thing.

If there was anyone in the global community that had the nads to stand up to him, I would agree. However, there isn't and I doubt Putin really cares if he looks like a thug, because in his mind, he looks like a tough mother****er, that doesn't have to take **** off anyone.

As with Guilianai's gushing praise of Putin, who doesn't have to live by those pesky rules of Democracy that Obama does.
Nice to see Mr. Cantor's support of the POTUSA, which I don't see3 on FOX .

Khazakstan has already broken ranks with Russia - usually their most dependable satellite. I would assume all the other nations that now enjoy independent status from Russia will follow and agree. If you actually, you know, READ any of the stuff I posted you'd see that the Russian people are not too excited about this incursion and probably would really dislike an actual invasion of the main Ukrainian state. News reports are saying that Russia is blocking outside information to their citizens about Ukrainian reaction.. thats not real promising for them....Russians have many ways to get around a firewall, unlike, for example Chinese or Iranians. Its not going to look good for him as this unfolds, internationally or domestically.

Because the EU, led by Merkel, is weak and feckless.
Merkel calls Putin childish names in public, then cowers off in private over sanctions .

Sullivan isn't the only one who sees this ending poorly for Putin.

Putin may be weighing 'costs' of Ukraine invasion
MOSCOW — Russia should not assume it will have an easy time if the nation's forces attempt to impose its will militarily on Ukraine, which the Russian parliament on Saturday said could be occupied by Moscow's troops for "safety" reasons.

"I think this will end badly," said Ilya Ponomaryov, a deputy of the Duma, Russia's lower house of parliament and a member of a party opposed to that of Russian President Vladimir Putin.

"Deploying forces to the Crimea will only galvanize the Ukrainian opposition. And it will only distance Ukraine from Russia," he said.

5 Things You Should Know About Putin's Incursion Into Crimea - Forbes
If Putin does annex Crimea, it will surely bring international condemnation and, quite probably, some form of implicit or explicit trade sanctions. With its weakened economy, that is not something that Russia can easily afford and a downturn can be expected. If the price of oil drops 15%-20%, the country could suffer a crisis on the level of what it endured in the 1990′s.

Putin will also see a military buildup in his backyard. NATO membership for Georgia, with the advanced weapon systems and training it will bring, will surely degrade Russian national security. The port of Batumi (see map above), could also serve as an important military asset.

Perhaps most importantly, annexation of Crimea will mean that Putin has lost Ukraine for good. It will be a transgression that will not be forgotten or forgiven and will speed up European aid and integration.

The Crimean Tatars, with their deep hatred of Russia, will resist Russian sovereignty, possibly resulting in a situation similar to the one in war-torn Chechnya. The Russian President is, in effect, sowing the seeds of conflict for decades to come.

And that is what is so worrying about Putin’s latest moves. They show that he is clearly a desperate man, willing to make a clean break with Ukraine and Europe, risk an acceleration of Georgia’s membership in NATO—an event that he wants to avoid almost as much as losing Ukraine—cripple his own economy and suppress yet another indigenous population. All for little tangible gain.

It appears that Putin feels that he has nothing left to lose.

How Far Will Putin Go?
There is only one reason Putin has embarked on what Russian democratic opposition leader Boris Nemtsov calls "folly": flexing his military muscle enhances Putin's authority as a strongman who will reestablish Russia's grandeur and brook no people-power in former Soviet states.
Putin's incursion suggests that he must fear Ukraine -- so much so that he is willing to risk Russia's prosperity and stability. Putin the rational Bismarckian geostrategist has clearly given way to Putin the irrational and impulsive leader -- possibly as a result of the triumph of the democratic revolution in Ukraine. This may be the only ray of light in an otherwise catastrophic picture. Bad leaders make bad mistakes and, when they do, their power often disintegrates. Unfortunately, thousands of Ukrainians and Russians may have to die before that happens.

Mornin' BMCM.....why do we even need to send a billion dollars as aid to the Ukraine. Putin just ratcheted things down. I put up a thread on it. Yet Team Obama is still making moves.

As he not only stopped military talks and support with each other. Which many would be surprised just what that entails. But now he ended talks with trade and investment with Russia too.

U.S. suspends trade, investment talks with Russia over Ukraine.....

The United States has put trade and investment talks with Russia on hold as a rebuke for Russia's incursion into Ukraine, a U.S. official said on Monday.

"We have suspended upcoming bilateral trade and investment engagement with the government of Russia that were part of a move toward deeper commercial and trade ties," a spokesman for the Office of the U.S. Trade Representative said.....snip~

Do you really trust and believe Putin?

Do you really trust and believe Putin?

Whats not to believe.....others already are reporting his sending his troops back to base except for those in the Crimea. He already waved the Debt for the Ukraine. So after both sides of the divide and the news sources saying such. I would have to believe it so far.

That's in his mind. And that's what will be his undoing. The Russian people won't respond well to much more of his antics. Not when it begins costing Russian lives and negatively impacting an already stressful domestic economic situation. Which it will. He can't take down NATO, he can't take down America. If he starts shooting in Ukraine the he will suffer consequences at home from his own people.

Russia still has and controls a huge pile of resources. Some of which the EU desparately needs on a daily basis. The Ukraine will still be largely a delivery state for those resources. They and the EU are nowhere without the source, which is Russia. The NATO nations want nothing to do with going after Russia, economically or physically. Putin is a superb politician (no matter how much we in the West detest the guy) and he has a long political lifetime ahead.

What makes you think my argument is based on any kind of emotion? Are you that desperate to respond to my comments?

You seem to worship Putin, more than you do Obama! :lamo

Can't we just leave Kerry there for a few weeks and save the billion $? I don't get the need to throw money at Ukraine at this time.

You would rather have a multi trillion $ war with Russia instead I'm sure.

A unified free world, led by leaders like Mr. Cantor supporting the President, is a great start.

He's not trying to take down NATO or the US. And it would appear he doesn't need to start shooting in the Ukraine. All the talk about similarities to WW2 and Hitler, imperialism and invasion for conquest is up over the top. I don't think you're saying that but some are.

Worship?? How to you figure I'm an admirer of Obama?

Just as I thought...this whole Russian situation was deliberately overblown by the Ukranian interim government to get sympathy (and money) from the West.

Looks like it worked.

I doubt the Ukranian gov't. ever truly believed the Russians would seriously invade Ukraine-proper (which the Crimea is not).

You seem to be sad that a corrupt govt. has been overthrown and there is a chance for a real democracy in the Ukraine. Or maybe it is that you don't have a clue.

Supporting the president, to do what? The president has to actually do something, to support him.
