Apple's Tim Cook: Business isn’t just about making a profit

Depends on how you view profit. Yes, business is PRIMARILY about profit. However in the pursuit of profit, it may in engage in activity that may not be profitable, when seen through a narrow lens. I would argue that having a sustainable environment is a type of profit, and as such can be seen as part of the pursuit of profit.

I know if I were sitting in that meeting and witnessed that outburst, I wouldn't necessarily sell, but I'd be watching closely.

I certainly wouldn't argue with you watching closely. But accurate information should be the guide, wouldn't you agree.

Political motives in a company are always bad....

Unless it's chic fil a hating on gays. That's totally ok.

:2razz:

BTW, Apple was interested in the environment back when Steve Jobs was still the man. They made less profits in order to be green back then too.

Well, you'd have to be a little more specific. What are you saying is inaccurate? The report of Cook's outburst?

I think if I was an investor, I would have a wait and see approach with this guy, but the leash definitely got shorter. If he does what Jobs did, fine. And do remember, Jobs, even as a liberal, had harsh criticism for Obama's terrible economic policies.

His job, without dispute, is to maximize shareholder wealth. If you don't agree with that or don't know what it means, then leave the argument and educate yourself, because you are wrong.

Apple if I am not mistaken is the most profitable public company currently

As for Tim Cook, he was the one to set up Apple's supply chain system, which has focused heavily on driving efficiency and low costs from its suppliers, ensuring Apples high margins on its products. Tim Cook has not negatively effected Apples profits. As for activities that are not driven by ROIs, it is called image building and brand building, which are just as important to a companies long term health and operations

Exept hatChic fil a is a privately owned business, and the private owners can make whatever statements and business decisions based on whatever criteria they desire.

Apple s a publically owned company, and Cook was apparently speaking on behalf of his position at a stockholders meeting.

Based on those remarks, I won't be buying Apple stock.

More to the reason, what was behind it.

This has morphed into a very strange thread. Few have complained about this, except butthurt conservatives.

The proposal had a 3% approval, folks. This isn't Cook rejecting a large portion of stockholders.

Then you make your investment decisions based on stupid emotionality rather than sound reasoning. Apple has been engaged in this kind of thing since at least 2009 and the stock has more than quintupled in value since March 6th of 2009.

He's correct.

Humanity before profit.

Apple Goes Green, Big Time

Check the date of the article. Sept. 25th, 2009. Apple stock price that day around $185 Now? About $530 or so. I'm sure some idiot who doesn't like the environment cost himself greatly by avoiding the stock afterwards, too.

Apple gave our school its first computers, Apple//e, circa 1980 or so, gave them to us for free. It was probably the best investment that they could have made, as the school and teachers became familiar with Apple and then started buying Apple computers.

Remember when $185 was insanely successful for Apple stock?

Yep. I remember looking the stock back then saying "Damn, I wish I'd invested in Apple just a few months ago" and now I'm saying "Goddamn! Why the **** didn't I invest in Apple back when it was only $185.

I don't know. History between them. A conversation that wasn't public that played a role. We are talking about human beings.

So, you think that a man that has made it to the top of his field, sits at the helm of arguably the richest company in the world, at a meeting with the people that essentially pay his salary, and believe in the company, lost his temper over a reasonable question by a person that gives him the money to do that which he lost that temper explaining? For the sake of apple, I sure hope that he is in better control than that.

That's I not what I said. I said there was likely more to the story. I watched our president before our take off his classes, fold his hands, and say to a board member, "you're just going to have to wrap your head around the fact that we have to spend money to do good in the community." It was a very tense moment.

You brought up things like "history between them"... so it is what you were saying, only now shift because you f'ed up in your excuse making.
