Another NFL star and television sports commentator is in trouble, this time for drugging women and raping them from Los Angeles to New Orleans. Darren Sharper surrendeedr to police yesterday. Ex-NFL Star Sharper Surrenders to Police on Rape Charges - NBC News

What is the cause of these behaviors that continues to plague college and professional athletes on and off the field?

He just better not use the n-word.

I'll wait for the completion of the investigations and pursuant trials.

Thom Paine

Looks like there's a long line of women claiming he raped them.

Where have they been? Rape is hard to prove.

I dunno, Sharper is kind of a scumbag.. Wouldn't surprise me much, but I agree, let's see the facts before passing judgement.

Used to be a D-back.

Now he's just a D-bag.

It appears he was always a d-bag, we just didn't know.

As for the OP, I'd suggest that there probably isn't a wave or trend of pro athletes committing these crimes. They get disproportionate attention. A hundred other women got raped last night, but they aren't on the news. Another hundred were murdered.

A hundred other guys didn't pick off that asswipe Manning to secure his city's first ever Super Bowl.

If nobody cared more about celebrities than their neighbors, TMZ would go away. What a shame that would be, huh?

Many of them think they are entitled and above the law. The have reason to think that way, since it does seem they get passes more often than you or I would. They've honed their aggression to precision sharpness on the football field. They have more money than they know what to do with. And, probably? They were never nice guys to begin with.

Now now, every story has two sides. I actually haven't heard what Sharper has to say about it. Rape is a hard charge to prove (beyond reasonable doubts), and celebrities are huge targets for this.

The fact that multiple women in multiple cities are claiming this is a huge strike, but I'd still like to see what he has to say about it. Let's face it - lots of people were ready to string Kobe up by his nuts when that kooky chick in Colorado got all pissy, but we all know that it wasn't rape. It was just some bitch looking for 15 minutes and a payday.

I agree except that some are actually nice guys. Obviously I would except those involved in rape or any other crime. Every time my wife hears something on the news about Aaron Hernandez she shakes her head and says "what a waste. He had it all. Now he has nothing." I suppose becoming millionaires in their early 20's is a difficult thing to which to adjust. Sadly, I can't answer that from personal experience.

I hate to say it, being a Pats fan and all, but I think that Aaron Hernandez might have ALWAYS been a thug. He is a suspect in a double homicide in another state as well (can't remember which state). I've also heard that a lot of his teammates on the Patriots did not really like him all that much as a person. He was a real arrogant prick I've heard.

Yes, I doubt he learned crime after becoming an NFL player. I guess one could say that the NFL is a cross section of American men in terms of behavior. The only things they share in common are athletic skill and wealth.

Exactly right. I mean, Tom Brady was really young too, and he didn't turn to the "thug life." I think a lot of these guys come from the ghetto and are in gangs anyway. I'm pretty sure that AH had some gang ties too. He would make gang signs on the field sometimes (something that earned him some complaints as a Pats player, which he was warned about apparently).

A lot of stuff has come out about him since his arrest. I imagine we'll learn a lot more during the actual trial.

You also must have heard about Aaron's most recent incident where he beat the crap out of a fellow inmate in jail? Wonder if he's doing favors now too?

I wouldn't blame it on the ghetto. Most of these guys got a college education or at least attended college. That should cure some ills. I once had an employee, a black woman, who was born and raised in Cabrini Green - a notorious crime ridden housing project in Chicago. With no help from anyone else, she got herself educated and finally earned a degree in mechanical engineering. She had the opposite of a silver spoon as a child and still made something commendable of herself. She is a fine person and I am her son's godfather. One would never guess anything about her childhood after meeting her.

I like your post, but I don't agree completely. Just because a person is in college doesn't mean anything. Most NFL stars go to college on a sports scholarship.

A little more about AH alleged gang affiliations.

There are lots of pro athletes with alleged gang ties, whether that be currently or in the past I can't say of course. It's interesting how the gang culture keeps hold of them even after they've been successful at their sport and have the means to escape such a life.

Football and basketball have been taken over by thugs.Just a matter of time until some gang violence breaks out on the field or on the court.

You have no idea what you're talking about.

Has anyone produced one scintilla of non-anecdotal evidence that pro athletes are, per capita, more or less violent than society as a whole?

I would think it's safe to assume these pro ball thugs are more violent than your average IBM employee yes.

I tend to agree. If six athletes in a given league of many commit these horrendous acts it's considered a "trend" but really it is as you say a person who committed acts, not indicative of their career as a whole. If six CDL drivers do the same thing, we aren't going to say there is a trend of long haul drivers committing these heinous acts, but that six of them got arrested.

I didn't say your average IBM employee. I said society as a whole, per capita. If you're going to move the goalposts, be kind enough to warn me first.

So, any actual evidence at all?

I liked him when he played for the Saints, but this looks like a slam dunk prosecution and now that things are coming out about his character I am very disappointed that he wore the black and gold, unacceptable.

My average IBM employee was meant to represent the average American, I can't name every company you know. Most companies are composed of average people whereas most NFL and NBA players are from a thug culture. See the difference?

"Thus, even though our initial assessment was that the NFL rates looked very high, we find them well below the rates for the general population."

It's a matter of perception. Pro athletes are perceived as "thugs" even though pro athletes, as a whole, commit crimes at the same or less of a rate as the general population as a whole, because their crimes make headlines.
