President Barack Obama will announce a $200 million commitment from nine foundations on Thursday afternoon to bolster the lives of young men and boys of color.

The funding is part of a larger initiative from the White House to bring private businesses, nonprofits and local governments together to intervene in key moments in the lives of young black and Hispanic men to ensure they stay in school and eventually train for and get good jobs.

As Yahoo News first reported, the cause will be a major focus of Obama’s — and the first lady’s — even after he leaves office. "It’s something that's deeply personal to the president and first lady,” said Valerie Jarrett, a senior adviser to the president and the Obamas’ closest friend from Chicago. “I’m sure their commitment to this initiative will be a lifelong commitment. This is not something they simply want to do while he’s in office — it will continue.”

The president personally ordered his senior staff to come up with this new “My Brother’s Keeper” initiative in the wake of the shooting of Florida teen Trayvon Martin two years ago. Obama — who was criticized by civil rights leaders for avoiding race-based initiatives and conversations while in office — was deeply moved by Martin’s death, and he tasked his staff with creating a holistic, research-based approach to helping young minority boys succeed and avoid violence.

The president will create a new interagency My Brother’s Keeper Task Force headed by Broderick Johnson, the Cabinet secretary and assistant to the president. Education Secretary Arne Duncan, Attorney General Eric Holder, Labor Secretary Thomas Perez and other senior officials will be personally involved in “My Brother’s Keeper,” according to Jarrett.

Young black men persistently lag behind other groups in high school graduation rates and employment, and, as White House officials point out, they are six times more likely than their white peers to be murdered.

"My Brother's Keeper" is one part of Obama's larger plan to tackle issues facing the African-American community in his second term, the president told civil rights leaders in a meeting last week. Obama will also push Congress to restore the part of the Voting Rights Act struck down by the Supreme Court last term and to pass a law banning racial profiling by law enforcement. The Justice Department is also pushing through criminal justice reforms without Congress' help, such as urging prosecutors not to use mandatory minimums against nonviolent drug offenders and encouraging prisoners sentenced under old, racially discriminatory crack laws to apply for a new clemency program.

“He’s committed to being more aggressive,” said the Rev. Al Sharpton, who was in the meeting.....snip~

So what are your thoughts with this? Says to help minority men of color......as you can see Obama is looking to garner the vote for the Democrats. Thru this means here. Not much is highlighted about Hispanics and Latins. Nor does it say much about any other minorities.

This was a Chicago Program.....that Bloomberg copied off Emanuel and the city here. Emanuel was out all this morning touting how happy that Obama extended this to National Program. Yes 200 mil and Jarrett conforms they will get more. Now what do you think takes place for all those they do for?

Division.....101. Democrat Style!

This was an outstanding OP brother MMC, until this last paragraph and the one above it, IMHO.
However, this may be a debating style I am missing, so I liked the OP .

On one hand we're being schooled by our government that they should provide equality for all, regardless of race and sexual orientation. Then they start a program that includes/excludes by race. How is this not wrong?

I think it's a wonderful thing. Young black men need all the help they can muster to get them out of their inner-city jungles and into mainstream society. I love the name. Don't know why this didn't happen years ago.

You know how I know you don't even read the stories you post....

However, this may be a debating style I am missing, so I liked the OP .

I have to agree with you, Nimby. It was a very good OP until you got down to the end and the author just had to make it a partisan issue. What really makes me shake my head over how the OP's near instantaneous devaluation was reading other threads that constantly put down young Black teens (or Blacks in general) for being lazy, shiftless, thugs, vagrants and everything negative under the sun or how Pres. Obama is just "giving away tax payer dollars to minorities" for whatever reason, the moment he goes out and persuades private corporations to put their own money forward to bring about jobs skills and job placement initiatives to help these very "shiftless, lazy, thuggish" young Black teens (and subsequently Black families) learn how to do better for themselves, suddenly it's all about garnering Democratic votes.

Sometimes, you just have to shake your head and ignore stupid. It's hard sometimes, but I do try.

You know how I know you don't even read the stories you post....

Do you know.....How I notice that you always look to try and make stuff out about the poster rather than the OP.....due to that limitation you spoke about?

Why is it that for as long as you have been here. You aint been able to figure that out....huh country?

Hey Maggie. The Mentors have been around for how long? Peer mentoring has been going on since the 1960's. Do you think there have been Federal Grants to assists in such programs? If so......do you think the money went where it was suppose to go all this time? Many were city programs as well.

Peer mentoring in education was promoted during the 1960s by educator and theorist Paulo Freire:

"The fundamental task of the mentor is a liberatory task. It is not to encourage the mentor’s goals and aspirations and dreams to be reproduced in the mentees, the students, but to give rise to the possibility that the students become the owners of their own history. This is how I understand the need that teachers have to transcend their merely instructive task and to assume the ethical posture of a mentor who truly believes in the total autonomy, freedom, and development of those he or she mentors.

Peer mentors appear mainly in secondary schools where students moving up from primary schools may need assistance in settling into the new schedule and lifestyle of secondary school life, however peer mentoring can occur at the grade school level, the undergraduate level, and the graduate school level. The goals of the program may vary according to the level, the educational institution or the discipline.

Peer mentoring in higher education has enjoyed a good name and is seen favorably by both educational administrators and students.[18] During the last decade, peer mentoring has expanded and is found in most colleges and universities, frequently as a means to outreach, retain, and recruit minority students.[4] Peer mentoring is used extensively in higher education for several reasons:

Benefits attributed to classical mentoring (when an older adult mentors a younger person) can translate to peer mentoring relationships, mainly when the peer mentor and the mentee have similar backgrounds;

The lack of role models or volunteers forces administrators and student leaders to use students as peer mentors of other students—usually first year students, ethnic minorities,[19] and women[20]--in order to guide, support, and instruct junior students;

Because peer mentoring programs require a low budget for administration and/or development, they become a cheap alternative to support students perceived as likely to fail.

Criticisms.....

Peer mentoring programs usually target ethnic minorities, people with disabilities and women. This approach tends to be conceived out of the "deficiency model" where multi-ethnic students, women and students with disabilities are perceived as being in need of help and unlikely to succeed unless senior students or successful adults help them.[26] One of the main criticisms of peer mentoring is the lack of research to show how peer mentoring relationships work, how they develop, and what their outcomes are.[27] Also, the nature of being either a mentor or mentee and at the same time a peer can make the relationship a dual one where other identities also converge.[28] Some peer mentoring programs promote assimilation among ethnic minority students because of the use of student role models who are perceived as successful in social and educational environments characterized by majority students.[29] These role models then become the people that peer mentees strive to imitate or emulate.[30] A more subtle criticism of peer mentoring refers to their lack of supervision and structure: most peer mentoring programs led by undergraduate students rarely have direct supervision of full-time university staff.....snip~

if someone can tell me how this "task force" is supposed to work other then throwing money at the situation), i'd be fine with it - otherwise this should stay at the state/local level, where it has been making a difference.

I'm constantly AMAZED at the amount of fed'l programs that need not be run from DC. If they want to just fund local/state programs, i'm not even gonna complain about that.
That's the definition of the old "block grants" or what has become known as "new federalism"

Just thought I'd point it out to you...

Do you know how to read more than one Sentence to a statement? Who else did I say.....I don't see you saying anything about Asians or any others either. Looks like I had to bring you up to date, huh?

Note AT: these will be the same people hanging with Obama and his Progressive group after he hits pasture. Do you think they will be living large....................enuff, by then?

Awesome. So when's the program to help young, poverty-stricken white men?

Looks like this is old news being recycled to take the focus off what? The lousy economy? The disaster called Obamacare? IRS? Benghazi? 2014 Midterms?

Pick one.

Chicago must've stolen the idea from Dallas.

Since I now know you better and understand how you post, I get your discussion of the DEMs.
Many of my OPs aren't perfect either, for non-partisanship.

I would point to what I see as the begining of the 2nd great wave of Philanthropic Endeavors, one hundred years after the first great wave.
Coinciding with Gilded Age One to Gilded Age Two .

On the other hand conservatives are always complaining about the cycle of non-participating fathers in the minority communities, then complain and bitch when someone tries to do something about it. I could understand if you came in and discussed the program not being a good idea, but you're not doing that, you're just doing your usual government bashing.

Now I don't think the program will be very good, in that it seems many of the existing youth programs started whether started by politicians or private entities have proven to be very useful, and instead seem to end up being part of the problem. Even the well intended community service does more to expose trouble children to comrades than to dissuade further criminality.

I should finish by assuring everyone, I have no good ideas as to a solution. I fear that so long as corruption is the basis of humanity, which seems to be true regardless of good intent all our entities seem to have some level of corruption from corporations to unions to government to churches to ...., there is no solution to many of our problems, this being one of them.

Awesome. So when's the program to help young, poverty-stricken white men?
Truth be told, it shouldn't be white, black, brown, or red, it should simply be "disadvantaged". I'm wondering now if in fact it is worded that way and the media is just connecting that to a mostly non-white contingent. I'm going to go back as see if this might be so.

The 'Obama Leadership' school in Dallas opened shortly after Obamas election. Much like the Nobel Peace Prize, the accolades were a little premature. Its a cinch these young boys are already better leaders than their school's namesake. How could they be worse?

So? The solution to what conservatives are complaining about isn't to create a government racial exclusionary program. Conservatives complain about the same issues with all poor, inner city youth - color is not the driving factor, it's environmental. This is wrong, and frankly racist.

"Men of color" is code for "anyone whose ancestors didn't come from Europe", and includes Native Americans, Asians, and Hispanics in the same somewhat diverse group.

As long as it is, as advertised, privately funded, I have no objection to it. If my money is to be used, then it needs to include poor whites as well.

On the other hand conservatives are always complaining about the cycle of non-participating fathers in the minority communities, then complain and bitch when someone tries to do something about it. I could understand if you came in and discussed the program not being a good idea, but you're not doing that, you're just doing your usual government bashing.

I wouldn't disagree, except that what we generally witness is a continued effort to simply throw money at such problems. Unfortunately, money will not help the problem without a much larger helping of hard work. It's hard work to motivate the depressed and dispossessed and no amount of money will replace the personal effort required both by those offering assistance and those receiving it. After all the years of the war on poverty we should know that funds legislated, money raised, and money spent does not equal the desired outcome. It never will.

So? The solution to what conservatives are complaining about isn't to create a government racial exclusionary program. Conservatives complain about the same issues with all poor, inner city youth - color is not the driving factor, it's environmental. This is wrong, and frankly racist.
Regardless of government, it shouldn't be a racially exclusionary program. See that's where we agree. Honestly, it's not the "government" part that's the problem, right? If there is a successful program, then I don't care who runs it, right? You care obviously more about who's running it than that it's racially exclusionary. I think that's backward.

And either way, private or government, these programs seem to fail to work. Without some semblance of true opportunity equality, all these programs do is slap pinkie bandages on gaping wounds.

There isn't an amount of money that can possibly address a man's innate lack of concern for taking responsibility for his own children.

What, are we going to bribe them?

I really do not worry about what people do with their private money - I believe our society should be FREE enough for them to do whatever they want to benefit whom ever they want. What does make me sad, it bothers me a very small amount, is that if G.W.Bush was to launch a foundation / trust / organization for the advancement of economically challenged white boys from Houston or Dallas he'd be labeled a racist bigot and in fact someone would likely file a law suit demanding they include people of minority races and women. Like I said - I have no trouble with sorority charity groups, NAACP, and others who want to promote an agenda and a group of people, but try to form one for white men and see what happens.
