Jason Collins played last night

He got 5 fouls in 11 minutes of play. 5 fouls.

Clearly he couldn't keep his hands to himself.

A true impact player. I think the Nets should be awarded the NBA championship right now. And maybe the Knicks can get a gay player too, and the Nets and Knicks can be gay married, because it is their civil right to do so.

When we can't keep them out anymore, we'll just call out the fact that they're not "an all-star."

Which is focusing on his basketball playing rather than his sexuality, exactly the opposite of your intention.

so, he played 11 minutes, scored ZERO points and committed 5 fouls. IOW, pretty typical of his performance throughout the rest of his career.

You know, you are right. Let's just make him a retroactive all-star, based on his performance last night.

No need to do that, but given your history here it's clear that hyperbole and persecution are all you've got in your arsenal.

A lot of guys aren't all-stars. Should they all get cut?

Right, he played the way he plays. It's not like it was a secret, and it's not like the Nets thought they were getting Jordan. Being gay wasn't going to suddenly make him great.

Yet apparently, he brings something to the team and something to the bench or he would never have played in the first place. He's a defensive player, always has been.

I just thought it was odd that they only signed him to a 10 day contract. so what happens after 10 days?

as for his career, I tend to agree for the most part. He's never been able to shoot, he's never been able to rebound, he was basically a "big guy" who could clog up the middle and foul people to prevent easy baskets.

He gets released, signs another ten day contract, or he signs a longer contract.

I haven't followed the NBA closely for a while, is this a common practice?

It's reasonably common, usually with teams that can fill an injury on the free agent market.

It's just not common for a guy to have those stats and get mentioned. Guess you have to bend over for that kind of recognition.

the funny thing is, he's not even "the first".

Los Angeles Galaxy midfielder Robbie Rogers became the first openly gay male athlete to play in a U.S. professional sports league when he made his Major League Soccer debut in May 2013

so Collins isn't even the first openly gay professional player. and, unlike Collins, Rogers didn't wait until his career was already over and in the dumpster before coming out....

A soccer player admitting to being gay is like a women's softball player coming out as lesbian.

If they suck (easy now...suck at basketball)...then yes.

I'm not really sure, but at this point in the season you will see some of it. A team might sign someone to a ten day contract to fill in a hole that they need filled until some player/s come back from injury, and while much of the time the player has no shot to earn a spot on the team, if they play well they might get picked up some other team. Much of the time this is used on players that have pretty much played their way out of the league and either has no chance to really play again in the league, or someone that if they play well could very well revive their career, but I wouldn't imagine it is clear to the player many times which one they happen to be, so it's not at all rare to see them play well in the hopes it gives them another shot. For example, Manny Harris was signed to two ten day contracts with the Lakers this year after they suffered from a horde of injuries and found themselves in need of some players to fill in some roster spots. He played well, and while he was not signed on again after his second contract was up earned himself some exposer with good performances, and at least from what I saw, showed he deserved to be on an NBA roster. How his performance when signed to those two ten day contracts plays out for him in future is unknown, but for now he is back to the D-League.

Whoa!!! Slow down there, cowboy! Wow, we are a bit touchy, aren't we? "Given your history" and "all you've got in your arsenal". Obviously, things are not all that clear to you. But, you go right on with your little fit.

The man had a long career and he never was a big scorer. For thirteen years the GMs of the Nets (twice), Celtics, Grizzlies, Wizards, Timberwolves and Hawks knew nothing about basketball?

In 2010–11, the fifth-seeded Hawks defeated the fourth-seeded Orlando Magic as Collins slowed the Magic's dominant center, Dwight Howard. After Game 4 in the series, then-Orlando coach Stan Van Gundy called Collins' play "the best defense on [Howard] all year".[15] After two seasons and a half with the Hawks, Collins averaged 1.5 points and 1.6 rebounds per game.

The best defense all year, and your assessment is that he sucked?

Wow....he had a good series. 4 years ago. Hell...offer him a long term deal and get his bust ready for the hall of fame.

Maybe some team ought to bring back Greg Ostertag. He played tough against Shaq once.

I'm not saying he's a HoFer, but he was a decent defender, and last night's performance was about right with his career averages stat wise. Stats aren't everything, but he was an OK player for a long time and suddenly everybody overreacts because he's gay. Both sides. You're like "OH, he sucked..." He didn't suck. He was a decent backup, and that's what he was brought in to be. Do we slag all the straight players who play decent D but aren't all stars?'

Everybody's doubting it was a basketball decision, but the Nets needed a guy to come in in the short term and be a backup. I can't see how it wasn't a basketball decision.

I didnt say anything about what his career "used" to be. If they suck in their current present state, then yes...you cut them. That was your question...and the answer remains the same.

As for the "over-reacting because he is gay" comment...dood...why do you think you started this thread in the first place? Do you make it a habit of starting threads any time some past their expiration date role player is offered a 10 day contract?

It's history no matter what you think about it. It's also something that's been discussed ad nauseum here on DP, and it's the latest news in the saga. My only reaction in the OP was, "Dude played, nobody got raped." I've not said anything about him deserving a long term deal, or that he should be in the HoF, just that he didn't suck. Last night's game seemed to be a pretty normal game for him. I'm not going to overinflate his career or it's importance, but the barrier's been broken and lo and behold, the NBA didn't fold last night, and there wasn't a big gay orgy in the Nets locker room (that we know of anyway). Life went on exactly as it did before.

He wasn't an all-star before, and he still isn't one but the automatic reaction is "it's political" or "He sucked." He didn't suck, he never was an all-star and the Nets needed some temporary backup help on the inside. Do we call it political or slag every backup who's maybe past his expiration date signs a 10 day deal?
