Tom Perkins' big idea: The rich should get more votes

Ideally, dumb people shouldn't have a vote, I think we can all agree on that. Just how to decide who's dumb and who's not.

Why obviously only those people that agree with me should be allowed to vote, and then I could be their President...

Sadly, a number of politicians on both sides of the aisle would agree with that.

We could go back to only allowing property owners to vote. Would greatly kill city influence in elections.

Of course people would never go for it.

Big cities account for 50% of the economy. That is, of course, why they're big.

Everyone who is goverened should have a say in if and how they are goverened. That is their natural right. HOWEVER, everyone should also contribute to governance, or GTFO.

It depends on whether their personal benefit extends to a greater good for others.

If it is in the profitability of a company that employs 100 people, one would imagine their self-serving policies provide a common benefit to all in the company's purview.

If it is in the value of real estate in their community, one would imagine their self-serving policies provide a common benefit to all members of that community.

It is contradictory: that self-interest serves for the common good. But it has worked when properly regulated.

Cutting the pay of those 100 employees is good for the business.

Obviously, our government doesn't operate as intended by the Constitution, so what's wrong with the rich getting more votes? The entire thing is skewed already, this would just be another patch on the problem of big government. Of course, we could always try to fix the government, instead of trying to patch things. The government has gone completely off the rails with spending our money.

The rich aggressively pursue their own best interests at the cost of a shrinking middle class and increasing government dependency. People are poor because they don't make enough money at their jobs. People don't make enough money at their jobs because the giant corporations that run everything know that they don't have to pay them a living wage to keep them working there. The number of people in poverty will shrink and the middle class will grow when income starts rising from the bottom instead of just the top. The nobility that the sycophants on the right wing adore so much will still be richer than everybody else if the poor can actually earn enough money to survive without government assistance.
The bottom line is the rich control an extremely vast (and still growing) majority of the wealth in this country, poverty in increasing and the middle class is shrinking. You lack critical thinking if you cannot see how these things are connected. I don't care how many new millionaires there are every year. They are still an extreme minority, and even more people are becoming more and more impoverished and hopelessly entrenched in debt.

As long as there are people encouraged to take 'free' food stamps, a couple of years of unemployment, easy welfare and false injury claims, the lower and middle classes will shrink. It's not the fault of 'the rich' this is happening. In fact it iis 'the rich' who pay for most of this.

I don't. That's already been a means of excluding populations (still is) from citizenship, for often dubious reasons.

...that's the joke...

The reason our government is so bloated and corrupt is the influence of private money from rich people and corporations. Our leaders (state and federal) have to represent their interests over the interests of the people. That's why we have such convoluted regulations, that's why our government spends so much money, that's why there is no actual party of small government. Every single politician has to be on the bankroll of moneyed interests, because anyone who doesn't will get buried in media campaigns to smear them and prop up their more complaint opponents. Those rich interests need less power over our government, not more.

Having unhappy employees is not good for any business.

Employees who perform poorly due to unhappiness are terminated and replaced with other, slightly more desperate unhappy employees.

Ponder this next time you get on a small regional commuter aircraft:

The guy in the right seat makes as much as the burger flipper at McDonald's and probably took on six figures in debt to get to where he is. Exactly how happy do you think that person is?

I fly not thinking about such things. Usually. Unfortunately United Airlines have begun to treat their employees so badly that I can't pretend anymore.

And yet...people come her by the millions and prove how foolish your comments are.

Do you have credible sources that show these millions of impoverished immigrants coming here and easily transcending poverty? Surely you're not exaggerating about a minority. I would love to see the stats for the millions of uneducated and impoverished that come here and end up being extremely successful.

It isnt the rich that are your problem. Hell...it isnt even the immigrants that come here (legally and illegally) with less than nothing and prove you wrong that are your problem. Its...frankly...you.

I am not impoverished.

What will be interesting will be when they make all those illegal immigrants legal citizens and then we will see just how invested they too are in dragging around the dead weight of this country that insist success cant be found.

I never said success cannot be found. In reality though, not everybody can be a successful businessman/millionaire.

While this guy is obviously being ridiculous, I would not be opposed to a very basic test for voters.

How many people cast a vote who couldn't name the past four presidents, or point out Washington DC on a map? Unfortunately, a significant number of voters could point out Nikki Minaj from a lineup, but couldn't do the same for Colin Powell, John Kerry, Joe Biden, or Dick Cheney.

These days, you should have a legal ID and at least a fifth-grade level education to cast a vote in this country.

This sounds fair enough, but I think having a test to qualify for voting leaves potential for abuse. Who gets to decide what the questions are? Who gets to decide if the answers given are good enough?

I realize it's a Pandora's Box, but we can't even get Democrats to agree to a legal ID for voting. The dumber the better, as far as they are concerned.

In reality not everyone NEEDS to be a millionaire. people just need to understand that if they want to they can work to become that. Hell...they can be comfortably lower middle income if they choose. people can be whatever they want. There is no legion of rich people deciding upon the fate and destiny of others. Thats the point. MOST of us that are comfortable income wise became so after decades of hard work.

So that's a no on those sources?

Doesn't (D) behind a name stand for Dumb?

If I was feeling more snarky, I'd say something about what the (R) might stand for, but my theory is that would get me dinged. Let's see if that happens to you.

So your real problem is that not enough dumb people vote Republican. Maybe we just need more old ladies who like "Teabagging for Jesus." There's real genius for you.

Funny how you guy's play pretend with this. If a mere 1000 SAT score was required to vote, Republicans would win 85-15.
