Tennessee Volkswagen plant votes against union in UAW defeat[W:600]

Re: Tennessee Volkswagen plant votes against union in UAW defeat

Neoliberalism has contributed to the race to the bottom. I never stated the Walmart model has harmed unions because it has turned our system into the race to the bottom. It's time for a paradigm shift so we don't have to continue this race to the bottom. The German model was a great example of a new model (for US) that is well worth trying here. Even as your article states (and I agree)

The UAW saw the Chattanooga vote as a chance to emphasize a more collaborative and less confrontational model, embracing the mantra that companies survive only by staying competitive. "With every company that we work with," said UAW President Bob King, "we're concerned about competitiveness." By finding efficiencies, the idea is to "have higher wages and benefits" paid from the fruits of cooperation."

It sounds as though you oppose competition. That's where the rents went, they were competed away.

What is "neoliberalism"?

OK, you're going to keep using Corker as an excuse. Lame, but what the heck.

As an aside, there is nothing unethical about expressing one's political opinion, or expressing an opinion about a union election, or even trying to influence a union election, which I doubt that Mr. Corker actually managed to do.

Officials that are leaders should not engage in lying and smear/fear tactics. If you think that is fine, that is on you. Basically, that is giving our leaders a pass to act unethically due to ideology rather than acting honestly due to integrity.

What? Are you going to make stuff up now?

Re: Tennessee Volkswagen plant votes against union in UAW defeat

The point is the people sited the number one reason they voted no is because of the smear fear campaign. Nothing ethical about it.

Why do you think you know better than the employees that work there? THEY get to decide if they want a union, and THEY decided no. So here's where you butt out.

As it turns out, VW treats its employees well, its a conservative part of the state, and this move will likely keep production at the plant instead of sending to mexico.

So stop crying.

I'm not crying. I'm merely pointing out that part of the workers' decision was based on the smear/fear campaign of the Repub politicians in TN and how unethical such a tactic is toward the citizens of that state.

Personally, I don't give a damn about Corker. He's not one of my favorites but he is a Republican and votes with the GOP to organize the Senate. His views on the UAW are irrelevant. I just think it's pathetic to use him as an excuse.

It's not an excuse, it is the truth. If you want to deny the truth that is on you.

Fine. Blame it on Corker, what do I care? That's not going to help the UAW win any elections in the future.

Democracy only works well under circumstances where people are properly educated about the facts and not based on them making decisions out of fear and/or smear.

"It sounds as though you oppose competition."

The rents that unions once were able to capture have been competed away. The measures commonly proposed to restore union power can only do so by restricting competition.

Which is another way of saying it never works.

That is not at all what your article said. You are making that up.

Re: Tennessee Volkswagen plant votes against union in UAW defeat

Why is it so hard to admit that private sector unions simply don't have that much to offer nowadays?

Unions, inequality, and faltering middle-class wages | Economic Policy Institute

I guess you have to be specific what they don't offer. Higher pay, better benefits, more time off etc.

Hell...that's even accounting for the fact that union membership is dominated by only a couple of sectors and union wages influence non-union prices. For example...a Toyota plant in North Carolina can't keep it's staff if it pays much below union wages.

What is your point?

If you are worried about the morality of the American political system, I think you should stop obsessing about Bob Corker and pay attention to the real problems.

Corker and a few other Repub politicians are but an example so you can't ignore them, especially since they are the topic of the discussion. I don't disagree our American political system is a mess. We can't permit this kind of corruption in our system.

You have not identified any corruption. Corker's actions in this matter were/are above reproach.:peace
