'In a stinging defeat that could accelerate the decades-long decline of the United Auto Workers, employees voted against union representation at Volkswagen AG's Chattanooga, Tennessee plant, which had been seen as organized labor's best chance to expand in the U.S. South.

Retired Tennessee Circuit Court Judge Sam Payne, who oversaw the count, said workers voted against UAW representation by 712 to 626.'

Time for the Democrats to go shopping for an activist judge and then call for a recount.

Eric Holder has a list of reliable federal activist judges to pick from.

You know how it works, keep recounting the ballots until you get the votes you need. That's what the Democrats tried to do in Florida back in 2000.

>"Then after the election, we count the votes. And if they don't turn out right, we recount them. And recount them again. Until they do.''<

Remember ''Key Largo,'' the 1948 trapped-on-a-Florida-isle thriller that starred Edward G. Robinson as a gangster (what else?) and Humphrey Bogart as the good guy?

If not, herewith is a snatch of the dialogue, Robinson to Bogart, as dredged up the other day by The Boston Globe:

''Let me tell you about Florida politicians. I make them. I make them out of whole cloth, just like a tailor makes a suit. I get their name in the newspaper. I get them some publicity and get them on the ballot. Then after the election, we count the votes. And if they don't turn out right, we recount them. And recount them again. Until they do.''

Well we can clearly see you didn't read the article, or even attempt to understand how this worked. You know the judge in this story was retired right? He just oversaw the vote because I suppose he was considered an unbiased person, he wasn't appointed to that position you know.

I read the article and I know how it works. In my life time I've been a member of the Longshoreman's union, a Teamster and a member of the IBEW.
The judge who over saw the UAW vote wasn't an activist liberal judge and that's the problem the Democrats and the UAW have. They'll demand a recount and will demand a liberal activist judge to be appointed to oversee the recount. That's how it works. "We recount them. And recount them again."

Where the #### where you in 2000 ?

This judge wasn't appointed... I don't know how to argue this, its just a fact...

Re: Tennessee Volkswagen plant votes against union in UAW defeat

We need to pass Card Check, so those anti-union hands can be intimidated into voting for unionization.

Someone had to make the decision on who would oversee the counting.

Maybe it was Chancellor Merkel ?

Re: Tennessee Volkswagen plant votes against union in UAW defeat

We need to impeach Sen. Corker and Gov. Haslam who lied about what VW represented.
VW had to correct Corker's and Haslam's lies several times.
It is okay for the KOCH brothers to dump tens of millions of secret monies, while GOP posters fret over Unions.

And it's okay for Duke Energy to dump tens of millions of pounds of coal-ash in NC waters.
McCrory is the next dirty GOP governor ready to get raked over the coals, literally.
The good people of the South are only a decade away from rising up against this GOP politburo to save their environment and way of living .

A decade ago, this vote would not have even taken place.
That it was this close shows how close the workers are to being freed from the GOP Gulags.

That a United States Senator had to intervene and lie his A$$ off about VW shows how desperate the GOP is.
VW corrected Corker several times and you didn't notice Sen. Alexander saying anything, since he is up for reelection.

That Grover Norquist had to be called in to buy up billboards replacing the word AUTO with OBAMA in UAW should remind DEMs just how low the
GOP will go to maintain their death grip once a right-to-work status is determined.

The GOP has now given the DEMs plenty of new material here.
It is now up to the DEMs to use it wisely and go-for-the-throat, as the GOP has just done .

Re: Tennessee Volkswagen plant votes against union in UAW defeat

The thing I found interesting was that while workers weren't interested in becoming a part of UAW, they were quite receptive to the concept of a works council. If you read the statements from the workers opposed to the deal, they mostly didn't want to pay union dues. Unfortunately the works council concept is banned by U.S. law unless represented by a union.

Still I hope the concept of having collaboration between labor and management rather than antagonism catches in the U.S. UAW even was willing to say nice things about VW management even in defeat, which hopefully reflects a more sensible trend.

Now that is news. At home vw is very close to the unions.

An interesting outcome. It will be even more fascinating to watch as this goes on in the future, as it will. This was a very close vote. For those of us that were born and raised in volatile union strongholds, we can attest to all the shananigans that will be going on behind the scenes out of frustration by this defeat. For Volkswagon, they are no doubt already in a huddle in the board room planning their exit in the future.

this sounds like a commercial for the DNC.

Re: Tennessee Volkswagen plant votes against union in UAW defeat

Nothing polical about it. The workers considered a service for a price and decided not to buy it. It is no different than a consumer in a store deciding whether or not to spend money on something.

Re: Tennessee Volkswagen plant votes against union in UAW defeat

T Unfortunately the works council concept is banned by U.S. law unless represented by a union.

Stupid law and designed solely to protect unions. Should be repealed ASAP. Think a work council concept is fine if agreed by all parties.

Obama and Democrats have to be furious. They gave GM billions to close US factories and replace them with Chinese factories since the Chinese are more than willing to finance Obama and Democrats. So not only did not get a union factory in the USA for political money, VW is building its factory here rather than in China as is the Democrats preference. If it's not a union shop company Obama and Democrats wants it shut down if in the USA. So they lost this particular battle against American capitalism anyway.

LOL. Typical response. Call the workers stupid and blame them.

Ah, add threats of sabotage too! Another reason for workers to vote non-union.

:lamo

So you're suggesting the auto workers in Tenn. are just a bunch of aholes who don't know any better and are easily duped.

Actually, their vote proved exactly the opposite.

It seems time and again the lies of the UAW and their hired thugs who have destroyed manufacturing in the United States are being exposed and the organizers are being shown the door.

Three chears for the workers who embraced the future.

Re: Tennessee Volkswagen plant votes against union in UAW defeat

But in the USA we have smear campaigns with United Obama Worker Billboards from Grover Norquist.
In Germany, not so much .
Now that is news. At home vw is very close to the unions.

Re: Tennessee Volkswagen plant votes against union in UAW defeat

So you're suggesting the auto workers in Tenn. are just a bunch of aholes who don't know any better and are easily duped.

No, I'm flat out stating that Grover Norquist continues to be the ahole he's always been, using your language.
That the words ahole and dupe would come to your typing is quite telling.

Along with the lying Sen. Corker and Gov. Haslam, who VW had to publicly correct several times.
Now tell me how those NON-Union plants in North Carolina dumping coal ash into the waters are doing right now in federal court.
See ya Gov. McCrory.

And nice job by the NON-Union companies fouling water in West Virginia for 300,000 folks.
Those people are still melting snow to take a bath .

Re: Tennessee Volkswagen plant votes against union in UAW defeat

Ah, add threats of sabotage too! .

Yes, VW was and continues to be afraid of direct stated threats of sabotage from Republican lawmakers.
No more money from expansion if you go Union.
Now who is the 21st century THUG, besides all their other talents like Jim Crow ?

Re: Tennessee Volkswagen plant votes against union in UAW defeat

But in the USA we have smear campaigns with United Obama Worker Billboards from Grover Norquist.

True. In Germany it would be politically incorrect.

Re: Tennessee Volkswagen plant votes against union in UAW defeat

Still I hope the concept of having collaboration between labor and management rather than antagonism catches in the U.S.
You're much too sensible to be on this board.
The open hostility from Corker, Haslam and Norquist doomed this venture to antagonism from the beginning.
Good thing VW isn't like the KOCH brothers squeezing every bit of blood out of the turnip.
UAW even was willing to say nice things about VW management even in defeat, which hopefully reflects a more sensible trend.
Why does that surprise you?
VW had to publicly correct Sen. Corker and Gov. Haslam several times over their Politburo-style lies and intimidation of workers .
