Facebook offers more ways to express gender beyond 'male' and 'female'

I accept anyone's self-identification (within reason) but I've never been comfortable with the notion that gender is a social construct. Gender as colloquially used and understood overwhelmingly refers to sex, which is emphatically not a social construct. When people talk about a 'third gender' what they are invariably talking about how people of a particular sex express themselves sexually, personally, and in wider society. This can manifest itself in innumerable ways including the obvious example of the trans-community. But other genders? I've always thought that was a bridge too far and that it muddles the biological waters for political purposes.

Muddles the waters? Why? Do you think people are too dumb to figure out what transgender means?
 
This is such a non issue for me as there's not one person on my facebook friends list who i don't already know what gender they identify themselves by. I don't need facebook to tell me.

Then again, I've never been one to have to have hundreds of facebook friends i barely speak to in real life or to add randoms i have not spoken to in 10 years since school etc.

It honestly doesn't matter what you believe, it is what is true historically. Gender is an invention of a society and it is differently defined in different cultures and changes within a culture over time. That is not a debatable point. The idea of "third gender" is a way of describing encounters with social constructs that are different from the western culture approach.
 
I didn't see the terms I use to describe these disgusting people on the list, oh well.

That's only a perspective on the question, not evidence. It depends entirely in whether or not you identify gender with sex, I do and I'm not alone in that. The idea that gender is a social construction is a philosophical and social perspective, not something that can be or is proven.

Furthermore it in no way impacts ones ability to completely and happily support equal rights for anyone regardless of their identity and their freedom to explore their sexual identity without legal or personal encumbrance.
