Man allegedly points gun at girl selling cookies door-to-door

I agree, it sounds absurd, but then who would think that a criminal would use a child to gain entry to a home? Who would think a criminal would use deceit to rob someone of their possessions?

Personally, I don't answer the door beyond a certain hour in the day and I don't ever answer the door unless I know who's knocking - partly because I hate people selling or collecting door to door.

It is completely absurd, can you perhaps source an example of this happening in the US?

What kind of wacko seeings a little girl in a girl scout uniform at their door and thinks a home invasion is imminent?

I'd say it a bit differently, I have worked with hundreds of students learning the proper use of firearms, shot with hundreds of competition shooters. I'd say a firearm doesn't make you paranoid, but so many fearful, paranoid people do want to own firearms. Fear ridden and deadly force isn't a good mix.

I think you are right about the gun nut personality being inherently paranoid, why else would they carry guns everywhere they go.

Cookies are a health risk! All that sugar, all those calories, he was within his right to defend himself, dammit! She was trying to kill him with cookies!!!

That's about as absurd as it gets.

My housemates and I have several swords in our house too. Having swords is cool and lets me feel protected since I don't have a gun yet.

It's about preparedness, not paranoia. Some of us simply realize that we are the only people who are responsible for our own personal safety and able to carry it out.

No. She was just part of a Liberal plot to destroy all of humanity through organizations like the Girl Scouts of America.

I don't understand the charge: "arrested on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon." How was the child or father (or hooker and pimp, I don't care) assaulted?

A quick Google tells me that in California, a threat of attack (such as pointing a gun) is defined as assault. Actually carrying out the threat would be battery. Legal terminology is often misleading like that.

Thank you, that makes it clear.

I think the important issue is being missed here. That girl was trying to be rescued. The Girl Scouts use these girls as slave labor to sell their products and nobody seems to mind.

Why do you assume that he could see who was at his door? I'm not saying that he isn't a little "touched" to answer the door pointing a gun, but you're making assumptions that are not fact.

I think its a fair assumption with the invention of windows and "peep holes." But a girl scout is short you say, she might be under the peep hole, in that case all you do is ask who it is and for them to show themselves to the peep hole.

Uhh, that would be the gun pointing.

I really do not understand extreme paranoia. I'm all for gun ownership, but it is important for people to be responsible gun owners, not paranoid idiots.

Now, it is completely possible that the whole story is not as reported and someone is lying about or exaggerating the situation. On the other hand, I witnessed a guy pull out a handgun in the middle of our neighborhood and threaten to shoot our dog who was across the street fighting his dog and reaiming the gun toward several people in the neighborhood to make the threat. People can be idiots. So if this is true, the guy deserves to be in trouble. Responsible gun owners do not answer their doors aiming a gun at someone who they are not positive is an actual threat.

And there is a lot of paranoia out there if you think anyone knocking at your door is going to invade your home, particularly during daylight hours. While I think guns can save people during in an actual home invasion, it won't be because you shot someone before they even showed themselves as a threat at all or threatened them prior to that time. It will be because you are smart about when you use your gun and how. Answering the door with it aimed to shoot whoever is there, regardless of the threat that person actually poses is not being smart, at all.

Dammit. Is this really what America is becoming? A grown ass man pulled a gun on a girl scout for selling cookies and people are defending that.

Not so much defending the idiot that pointed a gun at a young girl for knocking on his door, but rather disgusted that this non story that couldn't even garner a full story from the LATimes, being used as another 'ah ha' moment to rail against gun ownership.

Holy **** dude. Do you read the articles? This is back to back threads where it doesnt seem like you have. This article was not a "full story" it was a quick story that was a few sentences long and nowhere, not one line in the little ass article did it make any attempt to rail against or even mention gun ownership. They simply stated something that happened. The end. No editorial. Please, open the articles, read them. Then comment.

I agree. That is just pure paranoia and stupidity IMO.

Holy **** dude, I wasn't speaking of the article itself, I know it was simply a blurb....But the underlying reasons that this thread was started with such a short piece, and then put out there as some kind of anti gun thread, as if we don't have enough of those, is what I was talking about....Even your own addition that I commented on was generalizing all gun owners in to a group that would be that stupid as to answer a door pointing a gun....If that wasn't what you meant to do then I might suggest that you think out your words before posting them.

Oh. Well I was confused when you said "ather disgusted that this non story that couldn't even garner a full story from the LATimes". Silly me, when I read, full story from the LATimes I assumed you were talking about the full story from the LATimes.

But the underlying reasons that this thread was started with such a short piece, and then put out there as some kind of anti gun thread, as if we don't have enough of those, is what I was talking about

Really? Because your post specifically was talking about the article which I gathered since specifically mentioned the article in a thread about that exact article.

If that wasn't what you meant to do then I might suggest that you think out your words before posting them.

Oh my how original. A guy on a forum randomly telling someone they should think before they post things. Wow. You must be the first guy ever to say that. I hope you feel super cool right now.

Just giving some advice....I didn't start the snark pal....You did that....anyway, on the topic of the dumb ass answering a door with a gun pointed, we all agree that he was stupid....There you go, topic solved....Close the thread.
