Lake Mead is shrinking -- and with it Las Vegas' water supply

I'm becoming more serious each post about the water pipe-line from the Mississippi River to the Colorado river at Page,
during times of floods and high water.
.

:lamoOr... they could truck in pieces of icebergs.

The fact is there have always been times of flood and times of drought all over the Earth. Drought is a relative term. Normal rainfall/snowfall takes care of us quite nicely, keeps the streams and rivers flowing, the reservoirs full, and the vegetation, including the forested areas, healthy. But normal rainfall/snowfall for us would be devastating drought in say Kansas or New York state or Oregon.

Nimby's vision of transporting excess water, most especially flood waters, from the east to the west may indeed be a reality at some point. Meanwhile water conservation and protecting existing water supplies is reasonable, and of course it is appropriate for the federal government to regulate the water from rivers that are shared by multiple states. New Mexico would be in tough shape if Colorado decided to divert the Rio Grande for all its own use and did not allow any flow into New Mexico. And Texas requires that we allow sufficient water from the Rio Grande to flow on into Texas too. I can't imagine how all that is calculated, but each state seems to know how much water it is allowed to have.

But the Rio Grande is a puny little river compared to those in some of the other states. Even the mighty Mississippi has had its problems--massive flooding in some years, and more recently so dry that the barges had to be very careful how they tracked up and down it to avoid hitting ground.

All this is to say that even with a method of transporting too abundant water from the east to the thirsty west, there will likely still be years of feast and famine. And we humans will figure out how to survive just the same.

They should just use recycled water for all of them.

I figured 1/6 of the Colorado river water, but that was based on a billion gallons. Could it really be more like 1/3? That is way too much just for a game.

The article said that recycled water was not available in a lot of their areas or some more would use it. I'm just glad that now there are now cities that are now dispensing with the idea of English style lawns.

We could use that salt back here EAST of the Mississippi River with another heavy winter.
Tell you what, we'll transport our flood waters and take your ocean salt.
In Illinois, we call that quid pro quo, pay for play, governors go to jail.
I'm already bargaining for Hudson Bay water in exchange for KXL .

If you're going to use pipelines, we will need to study environmental impacts for about 5 years of better....K?

Since you imply the KXL with the 5-year studies, I'm all in on KXL, and shutting up the Obama detractors is the least of my reasons.
I can't even make a good faith attempt at solving what is a very real problem right now, drought, without snark.
Maybe if I call it "water inequality" it would get the attention of some, since it is mostly western states in drought.
But wait, you haven't heard any talk so far about looming Eastern floods
due to frozen rivers, lack of thaw, and record snow-pack east of the Mississippi .

Oh, I'm sure the idea would be studied for at least that long, long enough for any drought to be over and probably a new one started.

Now, maybe if it were sold as a redistribution of water....

Great, now only if Obama was....I suspect we still won't see it happen.

Oh lighten up Nancy....I was just answering like a liberal would, you should have understood that.

Drought that in some ways is made worse by liberal stupid laws.

Nope, can't say as I have...In February

How about first we study the laws, and regulations that are exacerbating the problem?

You will see it happen before the end of the month.
Mr. Obama needs to let his enviros cool their anger before the election, not that it will help.
Enviros will sit out again as they did in 2010 with other factions of the DEM's loose tent .

How about we have an Eisenhower Interstate system of water pipelines.
I know that's too big of an idea for America to come together on NOW tho.
The West Virginia Kanahwa Valley could certainly use some of this emergency water diversion from Eastern areas of high water .
How about first we study the laws, and regulations that are exacerbating the problem?

We were actually having a pretty good discussion here a few days ago, then you came in today.
Since its all about liberals with you, maybe you should check the clientele out West getting hurt by this 40-year drought.
If you've never been out West, you can't even imagine the scope of this disaster .

Been there, long time ago though....I also have family living out west...

Of course liberals make drought worse.
How could I have missed that?

That would figure with backward and "stuck in the mud" thinkers.
Check out frozen rivers backed up with ice, almost zero THAW due to very cold Temps--backing up H2O, and record snow packs yet to drain.
Since I'm a scientist, I think about these things called facts .

Hmmm....awfully short on civility though.

As I say, a long time ago isn't now.
The incredible beauty of the landscape is worth at least one visit from me each year.
And every visit is a fabulously learning one, since I'm a scientist.

If your family lives out west, you already know how desperate the situation is.

A water pipeline from south of the confluence of the Ohio/Mississippi all the way to Lake Mead with excess flood water is my idea,
The pipeline could be giiving water along the way when needed.
And, it would intersect with KXL.
Just think, if a water pipeline spills, local water won't get contaminated .

Are you sure about that?

But strong on facts--which is all that really matters right now.
I was the kind of teacher who would take his ideas to administartors behind closed doors.
That way, noone knew where they came from and they got adopted.
It comes with the territory of being a "lightning rod" .

I give you EIGHT lines of thought and science reasoning.
You give me FIVE words from the scatt dictionary.
I'm done here with you .

Don't think too much of yourself do you?

:lamo Seemed like a simple question...What's the matter? In your world of 'science' you aren't allowed to be questioned? Seems rather unscientific if you ask me.....

What are you good for?

Do you have anything to add to the Lake Mead problem besides snarky one-liners at my well-thought-out proposals ?

Language is everything. I once was trying to get some of available grant money for a pre-school for low income families. I submitted request after request and was turned down. And then in a conference with my staff, a light bulb went on. We didn't change a thing in the grant request other than changing 'low income families' to 'pre-delinquent children'. (These were all 3, 4, and 5 yr olds.) We got our grant almost immediately. :)

So you're not using the right approach here friend. If you want the leftists to get on board, point out that you're transferring water to the H2O oppressed people of the world and the GOP opposes that. They'll be scrambling all over themselves to support that pipeline. :)

What are you good for?

What am I good for? How about getting the products, and food you use to you on time for you to use them? Is that enough?

You mean other than the very type of attacks you are lobbing at me? Nah, I could never match up to the picture of your self you have in your own minds eye....

This is an honorable thing that you do.
We all have a special place in this Great Nation .

The Voice, by the Moody Blues.
The voices of the Great GOP Presidents that I idolize--Lincoln, TR, IKE--are ringing in my ear.
They were men with Great Vision and Great Ideas.
Nothing short of them will do, going forward.
