Silicon Valley billionaire compares treatment of America's rich to Nazi [W:185]

I can't say I agree with him fully, although, there is something in the air concerning progressives that is disconcerting to say the least...The outright hate for those who have made lots of money, rooted in mostly jealous rage could boil over, but I don't think we are there now...What he says is spot on though.

Why not donate their wealth, become poor, and no longer be a "target" for criticism?

Would even a Jesus the Christ complain.

Re: Silicon Valley billionaire compares treatment of America's rich to Nazi persecuti

why? they have no legal power, no special privilages over you, so maybe some bad street crime. no mugger can take near as much away from you as the bankers can, and they can do it legally.

You may be right but I still feel safer in a bank then walking through a low income neighborhood at 2am.

Re: Silicon Valley billionaire compares treatment of America's rich to Nazi persecuti

Some on the right claim they feel safer with less Government.

Donate their wealth to whom? What happens should they work and regain that wealth? Would they have to re-donate it? This idea of taking away others peoples honestly earned money raises a lot of questions.

Powerful governments have historically created a great deal of problems for their citizenry, though many leftists feel that a big brother type of government might alleviate some of the bothersome details of living an independent life.

And weak governments allow powerful individuals in society to trample all over the populace as well, see Somalia and the warlords.

No one is advocating a government with unlimited power.

BALANCE is key.

Balance is the key, yes, but do you see the government becoming more powerful or less powerful in the United States? Look at what happens when some US citizens protest the growth of government and how they are vilified by those in power, as well as by those who prefer more government control over their lives.

By the way, absurd comparisons with basket cases like Somalia don't really add to your argument.

Re: Silicon Valley billionaire compares treatment of America's rich to Nazi persecuti

It IS over the top rhetoric. After all...they dont really see themselves as Nazi's...more like "revolutionaries" readying the...what did 274ina say...oh yeah...the guillotine (well...he actually said guilotine...but whats in an L after all).

I get it...its over the top and there is only a small minority of people advancing that kind of rhetoric. But group think is almost always bad. We are one 99% er rally with a rabid ****head doing something stupid away from riots and worse.

Why do you believe they would keep making money if the same conditions didn't exist?

It could be claimed that taking money from the wealthiest could help them get into Heaven.

Yes, unfortunately, only the right complains about taxes.

That's because the banks don't conk you on the head or put a gun in your face before taking your money. It's all nice and safe and peaceful.

Just climb the ladder (posted by Disputatious in the political cartoon thread)

It took me 30 years of hard work to go from less than zero to very comfortable. Thats 30 years of hard work, overtime, 2-3 jobs, and finding a way to fit in graduate school along the way. Hell...I have more living room in the loft of my barn today than my first apartment had. What...you expect someone to hand you not just a stepladder but a gold plated escalator to the penthouse?

Life is no different today than yesterday. Millions of illegal immigrants come here today with nothing and start their own businesses. Every year we add thousands to the ranks of the millionaire club.

Good for you.

You've always had to climb that ladder for yourself. It never was an escalator.

But, it seems to me that the ladder into a middle class lifestyle is a lot harder to climb than it used to be.

It wasnt exactly a picnic 30 years ago. Just sayin.

No, probably not. I started the climb closer to 50 years ago, and it still wasn't easy. I think it was easier than than it was later, and even easier than it is today.

Those middle class jobs are hard to find now. It used to be that a college degree meant something besides an ocean of student loan debt.

And it usually involves my signature.

Banks, in fact, have contributed a lot to my personal wealth, such as it is, whereas the lower 10% have not contributed very much at all. I still prefer banks to look after my money rather than any alternative suggested so far.

I'm a 'mature' man as well and see dozens of opportunities available to anyone who wants to be an independent entrepreneur. I'm just too lazy and independent now to bother with the bureaucracy and taxes but certainly suggest some ideas to my family and friends whenever they're interested.

I believe we should merely goad the wealthiest into insisting their public servants simply purchase the finest solutions money can buy, with an official Mint at their disposal, under our form of Capitalism.

You can't goad the wealthiest into anything, which is why it is great to be wealthy. It buys your freedom.

I am working on my political satire and comedy jokes.

It used to be people got college degrees in fields that left them employable and didnt spend 6 years getting an Art History Liberal Arts degree.

Great! The world needs more liberal satirists. When can you start?

Really seriously? You want to try to make images like I do? Go for it.

Go out and make your own money, get your own stuff.

Since you are not likely among the 1% either, i can say the same to you, but instead you so blindly defend abhorrent comparisons on the "suffering" of the 1% in america to that of jews under nazi jermany. That is what i condemn. If there any truth to it, the 99% would have shoved him into extermination camp long ago.

I'm at a top business school but have no desire to slave my life away for some i-bank or become a vulture capitalist. I'm aware of studies on happiness and how after around $60k/year, wealth makes no difference, yet rich assholes like this billionaire will go to no end to step on others just to eek out an extra million. At the same time, i'm aware that some motivation is needed for anyone to bother with medical or engineering school. My solution then:

Wealth is capped at $70k/year
Minimum salary $40k/year

Confiscated wealth from billionaires will cover health care for all, food and shelter for homeless, repairing america's broken roads and infrastructure, and college costs for the 10% or so who take it seriously
