A billionaire Silicon Valley venture capitalist has been condemned for "ghastly and disgraceful" comments after he compared criticism of America's rich to the persecution of Jews in Nazi Germany in the 1930s.Tom Perkins, 66, wrote a letter to the Wall Street Journal, which was published, in which he likened the Occupy movement to Kristallnacht, the infamous pogrom of Nov 9-10, 1938.

In his letter titled "Progressive Kristallnacht Coming?" Mr Perkins said: "Writing from the epicentre of progressive thought, San Francisco, I would call attention to the parallels of fascist Nazi Germany to its war on its 'one per cent', namely its Jews, to the progressive war on the American one per cent, namely the rich.

"From the Occupy movement to the demonisation of the rich embedded in virtually every word of our local newspaper, the San Francisco Chronicle, I perceive a rising tide of hatred of the successful one per cent."

I can't say I agree with him fully, although, there is something in the air concerning progressives that is disconcerting to say the least...The outright hate for those who have made lots of money, rooted in mostly jealous rage could boil over, but I don't think we are there now...What he says is spot on though.

Re: Silicon Valley billionaire compares treatment of America's rich to Nazi persecuti

Taxes =/= Persecution

There are no parallels to be drawn. A bunch of hippies protesting is not Kristalnacht.

1) 3% increase in top marginal tax brackets
2) Genocide

Ugh, such a tough choice to make.

I don't think he is talking about taxation policy directly, but really more the drone on of people like OWS, and liberal news outlets like SFChron, that do their best to spew the 'eat the rich' line.

It is indeed odd how some people seem so emotional about the rich.

Re: Silicon Valley billionaire compares treatment of America's rich to Nazi persecuti

Oh, the poor, poor billionaires! They're so much like the Jews in Nazi Germany, being persecuted and all, rounded up and put into concentration camps where they're starved, worked to death, and gassed.

I feel so sorry for them, and have so much empathy, I'd be glad to join them just any time and feel their pain.

What a crock.

Like I said, It really isn't so much about tax policy, that is just the deflection put up....It is the underlying radical hate speech against those that have attained success.

When Hitler finally returns with his time traveling army in an attempt to take over the world again, nobody will be afraid because everyone will think "Hitler is totally like that thing your friend did when he refused to help you move on Thursday."

Oh, ok...So we must wait until anarchy to discuss disturbing trends? That's the problem with academics in many cases Ditto, they have to wait until the bomb explodes to recognize the threat, by then it is too late.

Oh, so you're saying that it will be much worse?

Yeah, that must have been what I was trying to say.

I asked a question....Are you not sure what "?" stands for?

Re: Silicon Valley billionaire compares treatment of America's rich to Nazi persecuti

good rule of thumb : if you find yourself comparing anything to Nazi Germany, don't.

I understand what you are saying, but Nazi Germany in the 30s did happen, and we as a people on this planet have a great propensity to forget the lessons of history, largely because we don't want to discuss things in comparison because it is just too painful, until we are faced with another like situation, and we all say how could this happen again? I say go ahead, and compare if it will quell another situation like it.

No one is looking for an exploding bomb or anarchy. It's just a bit difficult to feel sorry for people because they have a huge pile of money. If it's a problem, they are welcome to unburden themselves of it. I'd be happy to take their problems over. If people want to blame the ills of the world on me, I'd be happy to let them. I won't be able to hear their laments while flying to Bermuda on my private jet anyway.

Until it goes off anyway.

Forgive me if I observe that you are making my point here.

Re: Silicon Valley billionaire compares treatment of America's rich to Nazi persecuti

There were decades of demonizing the Jews as money grubbing blood sucking non-humans before there was a government in place willing to put into action the kinds of policies that were only talked about previously.

The left is awash with bloody imagery and psychopathic day dreams at this point. It's no secret that if the government did start locking up and killing the wealthy that there would be a disturbingly large number of the left cheering. Hell, they idolize leaders that did precisely that in other countries!

comparing marginal tax rates to Nazi Germany won't prevent anything but a cogent argument.

Can you post an example of this radical hate speech?

If your point is that we should feel sorry for billionaires and the horrible burden of having so much, then I'm hardly making your point.

Re: Silicon Valley billionaire compares treatment of America's rich to Nazi persecuti

Mr. Perkins is a brilliant venture capitalist and a terrible political analyst. He should probably stick to what he's good at and we should stop entertaining him.

I've said it three times now....I don't believe he is talking about taxation policy....Can we get past that into the demonization going on please?

When the rich are being dragged out into the streets, being sent to death camps, or being subject to, you know, actual persecution, I will agree.

Until then, this guy's comparisons are self serving and pathetic.

eh, people are jealous of the rich, big deal. they get the consolation prize of being rich. if a paper pisses them off, they could buy it and shut it down if it bothers them so much.

also, the rich have it pretty good. if we were monkeys and two monkeys had a corner on the banana market in the jungle, those two monkeys would get straight up killed and eaten by the rest. America's rich only have to endure jealousy. i'd be enduring that jealousy in my vintage XKE while flipping toggle switches that must do something or other. i'm sure it's still good to be king.
