Conn. mayor wants Facebook group disbanded after Hitler photo
A Connecticut mayor is demanding a Facebook group be disbanded and a photo be removed that compares him to Adolf Hitler.

The photo in question was posted in the Whale Tales Facebook page by an anonymous poster. Group administer Kathleen Mitchell said a number of New London city employees and board members write anonymously for Whale Tales, The Day newspaper reported.

The photo compared Mayor Daryl Justin Finizio’s speaking skills to those of the Nazi leader’s.

“I understand the intent of it. It compared Daryl’s oratory skills and skill at manipulating an audience (to Hitler‘s),” Miss Mitchell told The Day. “He’s a dynamic speaker.”

Mr. Finizio said in a Facebook post Sunday that the photo, which referred to him as Adolph Fibnizio, “should shock the conscience of every New Londoner.”

“This kind of venomous political discourse poisons our community. Comparisons to Nazi-ism are clearly outside the boundaries of acceptable behavior,” he wrote.

Mr. Finizio called on the page’s organizers to disband the Facebook group and for politicians who have received support from the page to denounce the posting, otherwise they are “condoning this type of behavior,” he said, The Day reported.

What do you think? Is "Nazi-ism" always out of bounds? Personally, I think this is a very good example of free speech and that poor lil public servant needs to get out. I do not do Facebook so do not know exact details but it sounds like a politician trying to silence opposition. I do not like anything about KKK but it is important that they too have a voice - same for Conn.

I'll agree that every comparison to nazis that doesn't involve actual, literal, active genocide is completely uncalled for and anyone who does it is a total ****ing moron who should be slapped in the face with a soggy piece of wood.

I'll disagree that any politician "receiving support" from that page needs to publicly denounce it. Those politicians aren't any more responsible for that douchebaggery than I am.

I don't think Facebook should feel any obligation to do anything about it.

Even stupid speech is free speech. The Mayor needs to deal with the ramifications of freedom.

Although I'd point out that Facebook can and will delete your speech if they feel like it.

That's my take. One starts pick and choosing what one feels is okay becomes very bad for all.

I'm okay with that -they're the owner. However, a politician should not try to control private media. Bad taste? Sure but that is the poster's choice.

Oh boohoo, mayor got his panties in a bunch.

Grow a pair and stop being so butthurt.

It's actually a compliment to have one's oratory skills compared to Adolph Hitler.

Watch one of his speeches on Youtube and see what I mean.

Stupid headline and stupid readers for believing it, there's nothing in the article that suggests he's demanding that this facebook group be disbanded nor is there even a quote of him mentioning facebook. What is quoted is this "“This kind of venomous political discourse poisons our community. Comparisons to Nazi-ism are clearly outside the boundaries of acceptable behavior,” which is completely reasonable and smart.

You guys need to learn the difference between forcibly silencing someone and simply saying they shouldn't be saying whatever they are saying.

Let's try and example, I'm going to say, "you should stop being so melodramatic and stop comparing things to Hitler." Here I go, "you should stop being so melodramatic and stop comparing things to Hitler." OK now before you **** a chicken in outrage remember that I'm just disagreeing with you, nothing about what I said should be taken to mean I want to take your rights away.

Questions?

What are you even rambling about?

I'm saying that the article doesn't support what its headline claims and you're a fool for believing it without any thought.

I didn't say I believed it. I even mentioned I don't do Facebook, However, IF TRUE my feeling is free speech is free speech and I asked others opinion.:doh

Let me requote it for you:

You know that bold part is what the writer said, not what the mayor said right? I specifically said there was no quote as in a quote from the mayor that backs up what the headline and article says.

Slander is a big deal in a major news organization.

but hardly on topic.

It calls into question the credible of your source, we can't really discuss your topic if the source for it is so flimsy now can we?

I don't think you have any interest in discussing TOPIC.

Pretty much this, 100%

Your topic is bull**** because it has no credible source to back it up

Since I do not want to join you in temp suspension, I'll only say it followed the rules: Title is directly copied verbatim from Washington Times. The whole article was copied verbatim (I just used the "request reprints" button). I'm sure the author would not print without "credible source". Finally, I proposed for debate: Is people becoming too complacent at obvious rights erosion.

Even stupid speech is free speech. The Mayor needs to deal with the ramifications of freedom.

"Forget it, Jake. It's New London."

I wonder if he was in office-- any office-- at the time of Kelo.

It's never out of bounds. It is a political stance and just as legitimate as any other, more legitimate than some.

No Hitler, but they can post pictures of this clown.
